General Fishing Tips / Re: Shark Shield in action
« on: September 25, 2016, 10:59:12 AM »
... What this stops is the fact that a lot of sharks will investigate prey before it attempts an attack like that...

Exactly. Since a shark expends a lot of energy on a polaris attack, it's thought (and would make sense) that they spend some time investigating before launching such an attack. It's during that investigating phase that the shark shield could make a shark change its mind.

Here's a link to a serious scientific study of the shark shield:
http://www.sardi.sa.gov.au/__data/assets/pdf_file/0005/173876/Risk_Assessment_of_the_Shark_Shield_Report_-_FINAL_19_06_2012.pdf

A quote from that study: "...the strongest effects of the deterrent was recorded for breaches, with no breach observed when the deterrent was turned on (Table 8, Figure 15)."

That's 0 breaches with the shark shield on, as compared to 16 with it turned off, over a total of 189 tests. Seems very impressive to me.

I Agree.

From what I see, it works.
