General Talk / Kayaking Lake Tahoe
« on: September 17, 2018, 04:57:21 PM »
I would like to kayak the picturesque part of Lake Tahoe the area you often see with kayaks around large nearshore bolders. Is that the Sand Harbor area?

CA Regulations / Kayak Registration
« on: June 01, 2018, 09:17:28 AM »
Going up to Eagle Lake next week with my wife and I know the winds pick up in the afternoon. She and I have Prowler 15s.
Planning on attaching a couple of small electric trolling motors to my kayak (Sevlor) for trolling and to get us back if the wind gets nasty.

Was wondering if I should bother registering the kayak. Understand its required if one "motorizes" the kayak. Does fish and game even care?

Thank you all for the input.

General Fishing Tips / Halibut Fishing 101
« on: March 25, 2015, 12:08:20 AM »
Want to try halibut fishing in the bay from my kayak. I have a few questions:

1. How do you disable and secure the halibut once you net it? Do you bonk it on the head, tie it to the kayak then put it over board while you continue to fish?

2. Do you bleed the fish, i.e. cut the gills?

3. If undersize, do you use a tool to remove the hook? Needle nose pliers? Hook extractor?

4. How do you keep the live bait alive? Small cooler with aerator?

6

duffman,

When do you launch with respect to the tide?

Has anyone been to the Mokelumne recently? I was wondering if its suitable for a kayaking trip from below Camanche to Stillman Park this weekend.

Where is the nearest launching point?

Any info on parking? I know it will be a zoo, but thinking of giving it a try if the Giants have a day game during the playoffs

SMC?  EKG?

Is there an acronyms reference page on this site?
If not, would someone please start one.

Thanks

badog,

Thanks for the interesting report. What road is Schafer Bridge on?
Can the trip be cut back to 3-4 hrs? If so, where would one plan take out?

Places to Launch and Camp / Re: Russian @ Healdsburg

mickfish,

Thank you. Its good to know its possible to launch there.

Is there enough flow all summer long for a kayak? I have a good quality 10ft inflatable kayak.

Has anyone fished from Memorial on downstream? I've drifted a section upstream of Memorial and caught small mouth bass.

KzReelRods,

New to catching my own bait, did you use a Sabiki Rig?

Was wind and or tides a problem when you were out?

Where do you launch? I live in Novato, thinking of heading out there this week.

Markbc,

Wheels are a must on weekends. Its a long way from the water to the parking lot and its uphill.

On weekdays they may let you drive to the water to launch because there are less people around.
