I'm not all that familiar with the 2023 regulations. Does that area open for rock fish on 7/16, or is it open earlier?

With the new regs that are coming out are we even going to be able to fish?

I sure hope this event happens. Its been way too long since I've connected with my NCKA brothers. The tacoshack is itching to get out and spread some taco love.

The season actually opens in May, but it's only open west of the 50-fathom (300 feet) contour. There is a reef out there, 2.5 miles WSW from the mooring rock (it's actually the ridge along the San Andreas Fault). I for one will not be paddling 2.5 miles to winch fish up from 300+ feet, that doesn't meet my definition of "fun" and it's also just a little too risky at that time of year. I have been caught 1 mile offshore in a sudden and unforecast wind and it made an impression on me.

So realistically the rockfishing season for us kayakers opens July 16 here in Mendocino.

I booked a site to arrive on 7/17 so I should be good.

Anybody else see the date posted for Albion is September 16th? Or is this a scam? Haven’t seen it posted anywhere.

As I understand it as of right now... It is in September. It is by invitation only. Entrants only camping? Chill/Party's over as far as I know. All Business and that's ok. Just going to have to pick a date in 2024 for a fish and chill for the rest of us that do not enter the actual tourney or????

maybe they should call it the Albion invitational instead of the Albion open. it doesn't sound very open.

Not sure where you heard this but just signed up myself. Same as last year as far as registering for the event. Didn't see any "Inventiation". Sent the organizer a message and will see what they say as far as the event schedule.

Either way looking forward to this event. Coming for that 1st place spot!

Just spoke with Sean one of the organizers and was told it was tricky this year with the changes to the season and whatnot. Pretty much once they had a date set all the sites at Albion River were mostly booked. But.... I booked a site today with NO issues. Think there are still 11 sites open!

True, not an NCKA event, we haven't had those in a while.  But NCKA has been a huge part of Albion since the beginning, and it's sad to think that NCKA isn't even worthy of being posted in now, but maybe that's just me.

It does bother me a little that NCKA membership has not been invited.  Without NCKA, there would be no Albion open.
That said, I'm going anyways.

A bunch of the Loose Screws are booked for that week for a fish and chill.  Most are in the "A" section in RVs.  I don't plan on fishing the tournament but some may.  The Taco Shack sounds great.  I will gladly donate my catch to the "cause".

I saw Sean's name here as an organizer. A guy named Sean use to run the Albion event. He used to post  here every day  but haven't  seen him for years. Maybe something happened and he stopped posting. A long time ago I crashed the party and he had no problem taking ten bucks to drink off his keg. We had that event in Elk for a couple years. The locals made us invite them to our partyand it was all good for a while.I think it was too much to see fifty kayaks fishing in their front yard. Exit to Albion.

Cheers all, see ya soon!

Sucks that they made it same day as MBK event. We set our date in 2022. Its stupid as it pulls kayakers from both events with shorter number. Wish they would have posted on NCKA or ANY OTHER platform.

Well said and thank you for mentioning this! I was tempted too mention it here, and also have shared my thoughts with Sean regarding this. There’s absolutely no reason for a conflict of dates for events in a year where there are less than a handful. In past years where there may have been close to a dozen, I could see how this might happen and was often worked out. It really just comes down to effective planning, coordination and communication to be successful. In this case that doesn’t seem to be prevalent nor exist. I would have attended both events as a long-time participant of both and in this case, like many, I will have to choose one over the other. It’s rather lame and could have easily been avoidable…

registered for MBK first, so that's where I'm going

hoping next year they fall on different dates as in previous years.  Both events are excellent - and appreciate what the organizers do to put them on.

Well, the MBK derby has been going since 2005/6. And Gimme Shelter has had over 220+ participants multiple times. There’s also a long-running one in Socal but I can’t remember the name (it was named after somebody) and not sure if it’s still going.

Scott Moyer Memorial was the So-Cal tournament. It was around for a year or two before Elk, if I’m not mistaken. They stopped doing it a long thing ago.

Yes. The tournament was losing participants. there were issues between people from different parts of SoCal. I remember told there was not much socializing, if I recall correctly.

Check your contract for the cancellation fee. It may only be $20 vs $75. If you go, I will be at C7.
