General Talk / Camper van under $10k
« on: November 18, 2020, 06:46:39 PM »
We're starting to look for a camper van (like Ramvan campers)  something that we would be able to fallback on if, for whatever reason we loose our home (Fire, flood, quake, etc)  Needs to be a van, as we cannot park a regular RV at our current home.  Any ideas?

General Talk / Retirement!
« on: October 03, 2020, 01:53:18 AM »

Big changes in store for me.  Retirement is upon me now!  Gave my work 2- week notice, we listed our home just before the darn CZU lightning complex fire hit our area, so weren’t sure how that was going to affect us,  but we got an offer during the evacuations!  We just needed to wait out the fire BS.  Our place for last 14 years has sold!
I have 3 and a half work days left here at my job then I make the 8hr drive up to Crescent City one last time!
Was looking forward to the clean, fresh air being close to the coast up there but the Slater fire burning there now has seen fit to interrupt that still.  Air quality there is poor at the moment.  I am looking forward to NO MORE COMMUTE!  I think I’ll miss the comradery I have here at my job. However I am looking forward to reshaping our front yard into my wife’s vision she has for it, while she’s happily pulling salads for us from her garden she has going!
I also plan to do pursuing some gold prospecting in the area.   Have pan will travel!

For Sale / Handlan RR lantern Red glass globe
« on: March 14, 2019, 05:44:17 AM »
 :smt006
I have a Handlan railroad lantern with Red glass globe taking up space.  I got it from my father after he passed on 09'.  Not sure what its worth is, (Saw one on E-bay listed at $235?)  Don't have any info on it other than its brand "Handlan"and maybe its a "Buck" St Louie.  Can't make out some numbers on the bottom without removing the paint.
I've never taken it apart to load a wick in it, the wick lever does spin freely.  Anyone have info on how to age this thing?  Anyone interested in having it? Make an offer.
I'd like to keep local if possible (Can't travel out of bay area easily)

General Talk / LED replacement bulbs for headlight?
« on: January 26, 2019, 08:36:54 PM »
 :smt006
I'm looking to swap out the dim yellow Halogen bulbs for something closer to white LED bulb's for my truck. The bulb style is 9004.  There are so many different manufactures online its hard to decipher which are good, which might be junk.  I want a bright white illumination out in front of my truck.  My current Sylvania bulbs are so so they do the job , but just barely I find I'm using high beams more often lately (Eyes are not 18yrs old any longer so there's that!)
Some have internal "Turbo fan" for cooling? That, to me screams future failure, so won't be getting /using a bulb with a fan in it, needs to have heat sink instead
Anyone here done a bulb swap like this? and happy with results?  If so, what brand are they and where'd ya get'em?

Thanks...

General Talk / Winch line issues?
« on: July 26, 2018, 10:11:40 PM »
 :smt006

Hey all, this is for those involved with or use winch's in one way or another. (Tow operators, crain etc..)
I have a Milemarker 12,000 lb hydraulic winch on my truck I think the cable is 3/8” x 125’? I was in a hurry one day trying to move a borrowed 20-ton log splitter from neighbor up a slight incline hill on my property and while using my winch to haul it up the little incline to the road (So neighbor could tow it back home) I neglected to run down my hill to get my snatch block to use on the neighbors truck. Was in a hurry.
Instead I ran the cable through a tow hook on his front bumper. Our trucks were about 10 yards apart facing each other, and his tow hook offered a better angle of pull to the splitter to get it up to the street. I shouda hooked my snatch block to that damn tow hook BUT Noooo. (This happened about 4 years ago?)

Well after hauling the splitter up to the road, my winch cable now has a section that’s about 20 feet long that has “Curley Q curls’” in it now. (Think Christmas ribbon and using scissors to make the straight ribbon curly?) Annoying! (Stupid on my part for using the tow hook as the snatch block! I know better! But what’s done is done)
My question is, Is there any way to remove the curl’s out of the cable and straighten it back out? I suspect maybe heating the cable at each curl may do the trick but I also know it might weaken the cable as well.

I could remove the bad section ( Min 25’ or more) and have a shortened winch line, but I don’t have the proper equipment to create the hook connection on the newly created end (Creating an “Eye”) so this option is off the table at the moment. I can still use the winch, its just a PITA having the cable twist up when feeding it out.

Another Option is to replace the steel winch line with a synthetic winch line, but this is an expensive option and not sure the CFO (Wife) will approve the cost.
 Any thoughts?
 Thanks
