Safety First / Morel danger - RIP pmmpete
« on: April 23, 2024, 04:07:02 PM »
I did not know Pete personally - never met him, but his posts were VERY informative and it seemed like he was a bomb kayak fisherman.  Looks like he was poisoned by morels!!

This was one of my favorite pmmpete inventions: https://www.norcalkayakanglers.com/index.php?topic=97723.0    :smt044 :smt044

His more useful posts were on downrigger setup.  You can find a lot here, but also on NWKA: https://www.northwestkayakanglers.com/index.php?topic=11486.msg128141#msg128141

RIP Pete... hope you're slayin macs somewhere nice

Gearing Up and Rigging Up / Viewing squid on the fish finder
« on: April 23, 2024, 03:32:02 PM »
This weekend, I was right next to a pb while jigging up squid in Monterey.  He was marking it on his sonar, depth, relative concentration, etc. and on my sonar (lowrance hook5-2 with tripleshot) didnt pick anything up at all - barely saw the bottom at 120' deep.  It was pretty obvious that I was either not using the right settings even though I changed the settings the whole time trying to see them, or the transducer/ff is not working correctly.  Interestingly, one of the settings was "overlay downscan" which was checked, and when I unchecked it, I no longer had signal.  A restoring of factory defaults and a restart got the sonar only signal back, but still, no squid marks.  Increasing the sensitivity just increased noise.

My questions: what does squid look like on sonar, and is there a specific type of setting that allows seeing them better than other settings?  I usually see big bait balls just fine, but wondering if I am missing smaller ones too.

Launched with gtnotte and his dad from the old pier around 6:30 or 7.  We were headed towards the reef for a morning of rockfishing and my idler cable snapped right in the middle!  No signs of tearing or fraying at launch, but yeah, it just snapped.  So, being the prepared man I am, we retrieved my spare that I have had in the hull for ~3 years and we repaired it on the water!  20-30 min later, we're back up and running.  2 hours later, I had my PB lingcod - 38" and ~24lbs!  Caught her on live bait in 30 fow.  The day could have turned out differently - It certainly pays to be prepared!   :smt004

Also, it looks like I will not be restocking my replacement anytime soon - Hobie is backordered, so I added some 5mm bungee to my kit for the next otw repair if needed.

Great day on the water!!

Gearing Up and Rigging Up / HAKA
« on: October 29, 2022, 11:35:17 AM »
Decided on an iron duck ultra vue 18 to use as a haka for the AI.  Ordered directly from iron duck.  Installed seadeck and will attach it with NRS cam straps.  Total weight is 18 lbs.  I'm going to use it for sailing, kid seat for fishing, crabbing, etc.  It is pretty bomber.  I could totally walk on it, and iron duck says it floats and supports 250lbs in the water, so there is a decent emergency option there too.  Pretty happy with it.  I'll report how it does otw.

For Sale / Kuat Skinny mini basket - $200
« on: August 02, 2022, 08:49:27 AM »
Trying to sell this like new car basket for one bike or cargo.  It is in excellent shape.  I recently bought this second hand for $250 - willing to take the hit to start my search over.  All hardware with keys and locking mount is included.  Need something longer, but I like the skinny version since I can car top a kayak next to it.

I would also be interested in a trade for a like new Avet or a similar-quality baitcaster.  Or if you have a skinny car rack that is longer... I'd be interested in that too, even if you just want to sell it and not trade.

Thanks all!

Gearing Up and Rigging Up / Hobie AI sailport scotty mount
« on: April 06, 2022, 08:46:52 PM »
Getting ready to take the new AI out... stoked.  Was wondering if I could modify the sailport when not sailing to accept a scotty mount, so this is what I came up with:

I purchased a 2.5" hose extender for a shop vac for 8 bucs.  These are slightly tapered, which helps actually.  There is one 2.5" end, and one 2" end.  Then for $9 I purchased a scotty threaded flush deck mount, which has a diameter of 2.5".  Then I purchased a plastic cap for the tube that fits a 2.5" tube for $9.  I got this one: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07NQQNLZJ/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o03_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Basically, I mounted the scotty deck mount to the lid by drilling a 1" hole in the exact center.  Then I filed the hole down just enough to screw the scotty mount in.  The backing nut for the scotty mount also has a diameter of 2.5", so to get it to fit inside the lid and mount tightly , I had to grind down the flange all the way to the hex faces...  took some work, but once I got the nut ground down, I easily screwed it together tightly.  Then, I just put the cap on the 2.5" end of the tube, cut the other end of the tube down to size, and that's it!  It fits snugly in the sail port, keeps the bearings in place, and more importantly, I can mount my compass up front.  The compass up front is one of the best things ever to have on a kayak, imho.

Anyway, not sure if anyone will find this useful, but its pretty clean and very nice to turn the sailport into something I can use when not sailing.

Best,
Nolan

For Sale / 2016 Old town Predator - $500 obo
« on: April 01, 2022, 06:56:22 PM »
Hey everyone!  :smt006

Selling my Old Town Predator.  It's seen plenty of use, but its still a great boat.  The mod pod has been well... modified, but is still tight and seals air tight.  I replaced the side plates with wood so the attached rails and adapters would be sturdier.  I still have a lot of the parts and other stuff that came with it, which I will include.  I adapted it for a through-hull fish finder setup where you mount the fishfinder on the ram ball in the middle with the wires going into the hull through a Hobie wire grommet.

Im selling this as pictured... I'll include the various things that came with it and could throw in a paddle if desired.

Asking $500 obo.

Best,
Nolan

General Talk / Giants game last night
« on: July 10, 2021, 09:52:12 AM »
Took my three kids to the game last night... Good game.  Giants won.  Leaving the game, we're crossing 3rd and King and right in front of my kids, a red sedan hits and runs completely over a woman, then hauls ass away leaving her laying in the middle of the street moaning and totally messed up.  Horrific thing to witness and my kids may need some therapy or something.  We were all shaken by this, and we can find anything on the news or internet about the condition of the victim or if they caught the douchebag driver.  My kids never want to go back to the city... Such a shame.    :smt011 :smt013

Hi everyone, I have to run up near Oroville for some afternoon business in a couple weeks and was thinking of taking my 9 yr old son with me.  If we leave early, we could get 3-4 hours of fishing in before.  Question is, where to go?? and what/how to target from shore??  Any suggestions for the best way to get the little man on a fish?

For Sale / Delta table saw with router table, extras
« on: October 25, 2020, 10:45:29 AM »
Hey everyone,
I was debating putting my table saw up for sale on craigslist, so I thought I would gauge interest here first.  This is my first table saw and I pretty much furnished my home using it.  I haven't taken on many projects in a couple years, and I wouldn't be opposed to an upgrade once I revisit woodworking.  This saw has a 1.5 hp motor with a 120V plug and is tuned well at the current time.
One main flaw, the miter knob broke off, and adjustment now requires a couple vice grips.  It is set firmly at 90.0 degrees.  I'm also including my custom crosscut sled made from mdf and some hardwood scraps.  It is exactly 90 degrees and has flush t-tracks to clamp down stops and offcuts.  The fence ruler is very accurate and the fence itself is firm.  I installed safety on/off switches, which are very safe and easy to use.  I also installed a dust collection chute that allows a shop vac to hook into it.  I will include a Forrest woodworker II blade and some spare blades.  I can also include safety gear as desired.  I'm thinking $600, but I'm open to negotiation for more or less accessories.  Thanks for your attention and hope everyone has a good Sunday!   :smt006
