Gearing Up and Rigging Up / Re: women's wetsuit recommendations?

@dirkbeachman, your daughter is badass, you must be super proud :) And thanks for the advice, I'm convinced on getting a custom suit and currently shopping some quotes.

I have a Stohlquist Rapid Jane size Small (women's version of Rapid John) 3 mm farmer with relief zipper.

Has never been used and the tags are still attached. I got it directly from Stohlquist a few months ago and it's been sitting in the closet since. Selling because it doesn't fit and I don't want to deal with shipping it back.

I'm located in San Francisco, would like $120 for it.

Hi!
I love my wet suit, and its a NRS 3.0 Venus. I've always stayed warm and as a curvy gal, it fits me really well. It has short sleeves (a different material) and enough room for the "girls".
I tried to find the link for it, but sadly, NRS might not make them any longer - but they have excellent customer service and I would recommend giving them a call to see what "replaced" the 3.0 Venus.
Another good thing is that if you order anything over $75, shipping is free, and so is the shipping back to them if you have to return something! You can get a free return shipping label and they are incredible about returns. Love their company.

Thanks for the tip about free shipping from NRS. I've been on the lookout for a 3 mm farmer Jane also. Will be ordering one of those shortly  :smt001 I bought a Stohlquist farmer jane and it definitely didn't fit-- they only had bust and waist measurements on their site, and I purchased a size where I was in the low end of the range for both, and it ended up being too tight in the hips. I'm glad NRS has a more thorough size chart.

Thanks for all the suggestions! One of the problems I'm having with finding information is the way "pear shaped" can get misinterpreted as "queen sized" or "middle-aged man shape". I meant pear shaped in the more traditional sense, as in I'm a 125-lb lady with a slim torso and some junk in the trunk. Definitely not enough junk to qualify a queen-sized women's wetsuit or a king sized mens though! :smt044  :smt044

There may a shop/brand that has one that will be right for you without going custom.  Have you lolled at the Mako wetsuits?
My bf really likes his Mako suit. It seems soft and stretchy enough that it might compensate for slight fit issues. Anyone here have experience with the women's suit? I noticed the women's scuba/surf/paddling wetsuits that I've used vary greatly in shape, with some brands being cut for a slim-hipped busty lady and others for more of a pear or hourglass.

If looking for a custom let us know. We can do customs under 400.00 and the turn around depends on customs but is a month or 2. Send a pm or email to redtrianglespearfishing@gmail.com
I think my boyfriend knows some of you guys. Custom might be a good option, will be in touch. Thanks!

What type of wetsuit are you looking for? Lined? Open cell? 3mm? 5mm? 7mm?
7 mm open cell

Gearing Up and Rigging Up / women's wetsuit recommendations?
« on: May 17, 2016, 12:13:16 PM »
I'm having a hard time finding an open-cell dive wetsuit that fits. Any recommendations of good wetsuits with women-specific cuts? I've tried on men's wetsuits but it doesn't work because I'm kind of pear-shaped. I'm looking to keep the cost under $300 if possible.

The past two season I've gone through some rental suits that did not keep me warm, a stiff straightjacket of a scuba suit, and an ill-fitting wetsuit from a french company. My current wetsuit is cut in a way that fits no actual human being: there is a big empty space in upper torso area where a 13-year-old boy might draw boobs on a picture of a lady (i.e. melon sized and way up at the base of the neck). I've made do for the last couple of seasons (despite the bizarre fit it is warm), but it's time to upgrade.

Kayaks / Re: necky spike?

Hopefully it was the hatch leaking. There's no gasket on either hatch, and the neoprene covers, while they feel soft, look worn and are not very tight. Also, when we turned the kayak upside down to car top it, a bunch of water came rushing out of the (closed) back hatch.

So I took the Dolphin out for the first time at San Pablo reservoir this weekend, and wow it's a fun little boat! I get what you guys mean about the primary/secondary stability-- it felt a little wobbly at first, but I had to lean very far to actually tip the thing over, and had no problem re-entering. The seat was pretty dry but the footwells stayed wet. When my boyfriend (he's about 5'11, 165) tried it, he found it unstable and was almost knocked over by some small waves.

After I flipped the Dolphin a couple times (for testing purposes!) I noticed there was water in the hull, something between a quart and a gallon. I paddled it another hour or two, and I don't think it took on any more water. Is this normal? If not, how do I fix it?

I'm starting to get what you all mean with "welcome to the madness." I've been obsessing about this kayak... spent my weekend replacing bungees and broken fittings, fixing the rudder mechanism, building a storage rack out of PVC pipe, playing with the kayak itself, and now scheming about how to fish and crab from this thing.

newfuturefintage, thanks for the tip on the home depot coolers, I'll look for those next time I'm there!

Thanks for all the advice!

I just picked up a Necky Dolphin with a rudder and seat, in good condition, for $200 off Craigslist-- probably should have demo'd some kayaks first but the deal was too good to pass up. I hope it's a good fit... going to try it out this weekend someplace calm.

Otter, do you think the Dolphin would work well with someone my size? Aside from being longer, is it pretty much the same as the Spike?

Kayaks / necky spike?

Hi, I'm trying to buy my first kayak, something cheap (<$500) and seaworthy on calm days. I came across an old Necky Spike (12 ft) for a very good price. Would this be a good starter boat for a complete newbie? I'd be using it for ab diving/fishing/photography along the coast. Any other recommendations for kayaks to try? I'm about 125-130 lb, 5'4" with a low center of gravity, and prefer performance over stability.

Weimarian, thanks for the tip on the swap meet! I"ll try to check it out... I'm new to kayaking and not sure what I'm looking for though. Do you know if they let people demo boats?

Introductions / New girl, can't wait to get paddling
« on: September 18, 2015, 09:27:13 AM »
Hey all, wanted to introduce myself. I've been fishing and ab diving the Sonoma and Mendo coast for a couple years now. I don't have a yak but am shopping around for one-- can't wait to explore and access new reefs and kelp beds. Anyway, thanks for letting me join this forum. y'all seem like a nice bunch  :smt003
