Gearing Up and Rigging Up / Re: An ink that won't rub off the kayak?

Sharpie makes a "pro" marker that is more permanent than the normal Sharpies.  Made for industrial use, might be worth a try.

Hobie Kayaks / Re: What Kayak hoist works for the PA12

I'm not sure how that particular hoist works, but maybe you could mount an additional pulley (like a climbing pulley) somewhere to use physics to your advantage.

Good and cheap or just good?

Good and cheap are Victorinox Fibrox Pros.   Won't break the bank.

Victorinox, F. Dick, and Dexter-Russell are some of the better, affordable blades i've come across.

General Talk / Re: Crab Snares from the yak?
« on: June 11, 2022, 11:53:57 AM »

And what about the setting of the snare? A long pole lets you tighten the snares up effectively with a big pull, but what about trying to do that by hand?

It can work, just gently take up slack and it's a little more effort to keep constant pressure on the line.  I used to toss a snare off the jetty with a hand reel (Cuban yoyo) spooled with paracord, and it caught crab.  That was from shore, though, and a buoy might move the snare around, which won't catch much...

Probably not more effective than just pulling a hoop.

Safety First / Re: Missing anything???

Seems like a decent start.

Spare paddle in the hull storage.  Most of the front, back, and sides of the inside of my hull is stuffed with pool noodles.  I also always have a knife or two clipped to me somewhere (mine is half serrated, which I find easier for cutting rope/line - YMMV).  Waterproof dive light is in my bag.  A few zipties and a length of rope in the front of my bag in case something unexpected breaks.  Fleece hoodie rolled up in the bag too, as an extra warm layer.  Extra bottle or two of water and a few granola bars is never a bad idea, either.

I'm sure there are other things to consider too, never hurts to be prepared.

I would consider an anchor and a trolley system as I have only been out 3 times but used an anchor each time for a little bit..... first time was just outside the jetty at Bodega with a ripping tide..... did not know much about anchoring (still dont) but tied off mid kayak and almost dumped it immediately.....

That sounds like a terribly dangerous idea.  I would never anchor in the ocean, or a high-current bay area like the Doran Jetty channel.

Pretty cool!  Had to look it up... here's a Sears Catalog with it from 1972.  $9.95. (about $70 in todays $$$)

http://www.wishbookweb.com/FB/1972_Sears_Wishbook/files/assets/basic-html/page-399.html#

It blew up when I played with it out of the water. Bulb got hot and popped... worked??? Don't  know, I was probably 10 then. Pop was upset though.

Dang, should have taken it into Sears for a bulb replacement.  The catalogue says "bulb is guaranteed for lifetime of fish call".  :smt003

Kayak Diving and Spearfishing / Re: Kayak and speargun recommendations?
« on: February 20, 2022, 01:52:55 PM »
On the gun side, I’m looking at something that would be good for Point Conception up to Fort Bragg.  I do like the idea of a wood gun, but am open to suggestions.  If it makes sense, I am not opposed to two guns.

That's a decent range of water conditions.  For hole hunting rockfish, cabbies, and lings, a lot of people recommend something shorter, like a custom wood mid-handle, or a Pathos Laser Open Pro 60.  I have a Rob Allen 800, and it is a little on the long side for hole hunting (still works).  You could get something a bit longer if you get into shooting schoolie fish like WSB etc.

Also, not a bad idea to spring for a nice, bright dive light.

Other people on this site are far more experienced/knowledgable on all this stuff, though.

General Talk / Re: Poke pole
« on: January 17, 2022, 06:48:14 PM »
I want to buy a poke pole any recommendations? If I build one what are you guys using?

Super easy to build. Go to garden center.. get 12’ bamboo pole.  Get nylon coated steel line. Tie a loop, run about 8” from end of pole.  Tie several half hitches until line is secure, then tie a couple more.  Add 3/0 hook.  Go poke poling.

Yup.  Mine is a well-dried and cured 9-10 foot bamboo pole I cut from my neighbor's patch.  Like Crash said, you can find them in garden section of some hardware stores for about $4-$5.  I use wire from a tomato cage (doesn't rust) or coat hanger, coiled tight around the end, then sticking out about 10 inches straight out past the end.  Short leader (3" or so?) tied to an eyelet bent in the end of the wire.   I pre tie a bunch of leaders because they often get snagged or frayed on the rocks.   Total cost: about $5-$10 each and less than 15 minutes work, and I have one that has lasted for almost 8 years.

CA Regulations / Re: West Bodega Jetty without Fishing License?

Yep, on the jetty.  Water on both sides of you and you're good.  Be careful not to slip on those rocks, lots of injuries happen there.  Someone was flown out for head trauma one day when I was fishing...

Hobie Kayaks / Re: Hobie AI discontinued...
« on: November 04, 2021, 11:44:54 AM »
Was hoping that (one of these years) I would finally be able to add an AI to the fleet.

I helped a friend haul around his new BEAST of a Pro Angler, and that boat is so wide/heavy/slow.  I don't need to stand up on my kayak.

Guess I'll keep ridin' the T13 until it falls apart, maybe add a Torqueedo at some point...
