Title: GSXVIII - It's a Wrap - Big Thanks to the Community!
Post by: LoletaEric on February 21, 2024, 03:03:26 PM
Registration is now open for GSXVIII!

At this point, the Office of Administrative Law needs to sign off on the rockfish season, but it's all but done - rockfish and lingcod will be open to boat-based angling in waters up to 20 fathoms in the Mendocino Management Area in May.  If something crazy happens to where it won't be open, I'll refund 100% of entries received.

Putting this tournament on has been a big part of my life for many years, and covid was an interruption that I didn't anticipate.  Now the fishing is changing too.  Last year we had a shortened season that was suddenly closed, making it even shorter.  This year things look promising for a longer rockfishing season, but those in the know are warning that the strict quota on quillback bycatch may lead to another early closure.  From what I've seen, salmon will not open at all this year again.  Part of what is motivating me to bring back GS is the feeling that in the face of these changes, our community needs to reconvene to celebrate our traditions as long as they're available, and that the camaraderie that we've developed must be honored and perpetuated.

With the likelihood of our large group catching salmon as bycatch, I have made a major rule change:  all barbless, all the time, no matter what tackle you're using.  This will be required of all participants on tourney day.

Another aspect of this event that has provided much joy for me over the years is the gear.  As many of you black-t-shirt-wearing diehards know very well, I went through years of changing fonts and colors while always having the "yakker image" on there, evolving along with the event.  Finally, 5 years ago, I commissioned a local artist and good friend of mine, Shawn Griggs (Redeye Laboratories in Ferndale, CA) to create the yakker in his own unique style - but then covid came and I had to cancel the event.  Shawn's work on this year's same level of high quality garments that I've always used will turn out as the nicest pieces in the GS series to date.  I pride myself in always getting the gear orders fulfilled and going the extra mile to assure quality as well as satisfaction.  I highly appreciate the support over the years, regarding the gear and the entire event experience.

Registration materials are attached to this post and include the rule sheets, to be read; and application and registration sheets, to be printed, filled out, signed and sent by mail with checks or money orders.  I'm not doing electronic signup, and I'm not doing Venmo or Paypal.  It's old-school, but it's a big part of the tradition, as I receive physical mail and go through the process of checking everyone in, sending welcome emails, creating score cards, scoreboards and schwag bags with everyone's names...etc.  By the time I complete the process, I basically know everyone's name, and I try to focus on knowing that person when I shake their hand and look them in the eye at the Cove.  Thanks for understanding and supporting how that works for me.

If you have any questions, feel free to post here, or call me up - my number is in my signature lines on every one of my posts.  The campground has new owners, so I don't anticipate a Jack-Style, per person kind of scene.  My advice:  get a room or a house, quick!  Campers, let us know how the new owners are doing on responsiveness, reservations, availability...etc.

To close, I had lots of doubts about going forward with the event.  The short registration period, my own aging bod and changing life details, the state of fisheries and troublesome horizons for our environment - all of this had me wondering if I could ever again go down this road, where I work hard to bring a diverse community together to enjoy common interests as well as each other.  When I went to my family, they were all in.  My kids were young through the early GS's, and now they're adults and will bring their significant others to hang for a long weekend at a house I rented in the Cove.  Once I envisioned that, I was all in too.  No matter how many people sign up, how the weather is, how the fishing is, or any other details of the weekend and the event, I really look forward to just having my family there enjoying themselves and showing their partners a little bit about what they experienced as they grew up.  A whole bunch of us in NCKA can, should and will have that kind of a nostalgic and reflective experience too, because a bunch of us kind of grew up around this event.

I look forward to seeing everyone who can make it.  Let's do this.   :smt001

I am glad I applied for vacation this year between mid April to mid May, I will look for more post on your event. I only got to get rockfish off of a boat last year so looking to score on the kayak, keep us posted, Ron.

the change in the fathoms that we might be able to fish, is that for  the entire  coast line or just northern part of  calif.

Hi John.  They have suggested that the regs would go coast-wide, at least for Central California to Oregon, I think.

Fishing wise if RF is closed there is a whole pile of sole to be caught. The bigger ones pull decently and they are delicious!

I don’t know if I’m qualified to give any fishing advice for that area. I would defer to LolitaEric who is the pro for the area.

Ive had luck catching sole west of the reef, away from the rocks in 120+ FOW. 3 way rig with either an anchovy, small herring, or my favorite a gulp grub. Just bounce that thing along the bottom and you should get bit. If you’re only getting small nibbles it’s probably sand dabs.

For cooking average sized ones I like to do a 45 degree cut and take off the head and guts all at once. Scale, trim the fins, and fry whole. Bigger ones can be fillet.

Bring your wife to the event. take her on a date the day after on your way back. It's a win win.

Me, Wife and the baby will be there! This is a long overdue NCKA gathering. Don't have kayak anymore but love to see everyone!

If memory serves it would not be the first GS event to coincide with a Mother’s Day event….. and if I remember correctly there is a way to set it up so a lovely weekend on the lost coast would work for all parties.

I would attend, even though I can't kayak anymore.  Especially if Crash can take orders for oysters!
Too soon to preemptively reserve a campsite or hotel room?

****EDIT****
Never 'too soon', reserved site 12 at the campground.
I think I'll bring the smoker and do a 17-pound brisket I found in the freezer for the potluck if there is going to be one.

Been watching this thread with interest.  I might come out of retirement for this event.  I haven’t bought more than 3 dozen oysters at one time since the last GS, would need to check sources and prices but yes, I can bring the oysters assuming availability.

Nabokov wrote Lolita in English. That has always struck me as odd given the far more conservative prudishness of the English speaking world both then and now.  Would the book have been nearly as controversial if it were in French or Russian?

I am honestly leaning toward the 4th right now, to get the "closest to the opener" vibe, and to avoid Mother's Day, but I won't make a decision until I know the seasons for sure.  It'll come soon, and I'll be ready.

It's gonna be a good thing.   :smt001

I'm really looking forward as well, my friend!  I got to hook up with a few of the gang at Doran/Bodega for some crabbing and now this to look forward to as well.

My reservation is for the 11th, but I'm sure the young lady who I spoke with would be willing to change it.  I mentioned that there may be a group of kayakers attending and she was very excited.  She said it's new owners and I got the impression they have some deep pockets, owning a few campgrounds around the west.  This lady moved out from one that the new owners owned back in Texas and is now working here taking reservations.
I asked if there were any changes from the old owners and she said they are planning to sink some money into the place, starting in a couple weeks to refurbish the bathroom/showers.
I can't recall her name right now, but it was very Southern/Texan, with two names, like Mary Ann or something like that.  Ha!

Yep.  I feel like I need to go down there to feel out the campground situation as well as the local inns.  There've been some significant changes for sure.  I'll hope to strike a deal with the new campground management so I have the option of using their pavilion again.  The Tides Inn sold, and it's now called the Black Sands Inn.  It's run remotely, has seen some pretty major remodeling, and I think it's pretty pricey now, compared to the past.  I've always stayed at that inn, but this year I think I will need to rent a house to serve as Tourney HQ.

My wife said The Inn is $264 a night now. The campground is $45 a night for hook-ups.  You can only list a preference for the site, but she did call me back immediately after I made my reservation on line and put us down for our site for the reservation.

Houses are available and a good value compared to The Inn.  VRBO has many.

I am so fucking excited about the possibility that this could actually happen. The chance to reconnect the brotherhood. The brotherhood that has meant so much to me for so long. A brotherhood forged by the sea and our mutual need to survive and thrive in the sea. Interacting with Mother Nature on such a simple yet gritty and honest level with people I truly care about. That is what makes me happy. The lost coast is so special. I will make a million fish tacos and take out the trash too. Anything for my brothers.

The alternatives for this year's rockfish season, both showing that May will be open in the Mendocino Management Area in waters 20 fathoms and less, have been forwarded to the Office of Administrative Law for final approval.  It is my understanding that there is very little chance, if any, that the OAL will alter or deny the approved season structures.

I'm working on preparing my registration forms and will attach them and make a more detailed announcement soon.   :smt001

Just spoke to Brandi - she is down for bringing her veteran Gyotaku skills and organizational prowess to the event again!  The Gyotaku will be on Sunday this year, time to be announced, but it should be early enough that people departing on Sunday can participate.  So stoked about this!!   :smt007

Thank you, Terry!

Great question.  Yes - cabezon and greenling can be turned in for inches, but any fish in the RCG complex will count as "rockfish", so only one RCG can be turned in.  This may seem contradictory to my halibut strategy, where one Californian and one Pacific could be turned in, but that's how it's going to go.  I'd like us to have a smaller impact on RCG species than the bigger game fish in lingcod and halibut.

That's a good question.  I've never seen anyone clamming down there.  Probably a decent chance of finding cockles.

Glad you're coming.  Be sure to get some gear please!   :smt001  If you want to just send the t-shirt amount I'll have you on the roster honorarily, but I think you'd look better in a hoodie.   :smt003

Excellent, Steve!

I was just reminiscing about how, back in the day, we had people from nearly all the western states at the event, including a strong contingent of around 10 or 12 guys from NWKA up in Oregon/Washington.

It's ramping up to be a great time.  Remember, even if the weather tries to shut us out, we'll gather and enjoy it.  The gig will go down!  Planning a long weekend is the way, as even if tourney day has rain and wind, there should still be pre- and post-tourney fishing opportunities.

Thank you for reaching out here to seek a sponsor, Tpowell.  It requires putting yourself out there a bit, but you shouldn't have trouble finding someone to vouch for you.  If you don't get a response here you may just want to start a new thread all about getting a sponsor.  Keep me posted on your progress please.

People with motors on their kayaks are welcome to register, but they can't win.  Human powered or sails only, as per the rules.  I've attached them here, and all the registration materials are attached to the first post in this thread.

It's not official yet, but it's 99.99% sure that there will be no salmon season along California this year - neither sport nor commercial.  This is the right move for the fish, and it's well supported across diverse groups.

In other news, it looks like we're 99.99% assured of having Pacific halibut open for GS (opens May 1).

There have been a good number of Pacifics caught during the GS weekends in the past.  The largest was a 51.5"/60 pounder caught by Randall/Bigfoot back at GS6.  A whole group helped Bigfoot land the beast on a super flat and sunny Sunday after the tourney.  I remember hearing that it had 4 gaffs in it at one point.

Other big Pacifics caught at GS, off the top of my head:

Domenic at GS3, pre-fishing.  This was a surprise for almost everyone, as we didn't really figure to see one come in.  We quickly came to know better.

Big Terry brought one in to clearly and decisively win - what GS was that?!  An early one...  The fish was about 48", if I remember correctly.

Derrick on tourney day at GS6.

Bob at GS11? - it was a tough one to lose, as it got away after being clipped.

Matt, to clearly win GS12.

I've gotta work on my master database, so I can access all of this info and the photos more easily...   :smt001

BTW -- I made that sauce this week.  It's DA BOMB!  --

I did make one substitution -- instead of 1/4 tsp. McCormick’s fiery 5 pepper I used Sriracha sauce.

That sauce rocked my rockfish tacos last weekend.

New owners - Jack finally sold.  They're cool and very business-like.  I expect that reservations and delivery will be reliable and straight forward.  There will not be any kind of pay per person, like Jack would do.  It's strictly a campground transaction.

As for the potluck and awards, plus raffle, I have rented the pavilion and patio, so we are set for that - including Jack's Taco Shack!

This thread certainly hasn't lived the life of past GS threads, but I hope that those who are following are as stoked as I am for what we're putting together for the weekend of May 11th.   :smt001

Make reservation here Sonny. They will call back to confirm. They will assign the campsite. I have not tried but maybe you can request for a specific site. It’s good that they don’t charge by person like how Jack used to do it. I’m paying $95 for 4 people from Thurs-Sun

Thanks for the info Allan.  Tried to call but no one answer so will try again later.  Checked out their website to find out about the camp sites so maybe our group can stay close.   I think it used to be first come first serve under old management.

When I made my reservation, I made a note as to my 3 preferences.  They called back to let me know I got my 1st choice.  It's not noted on the e-mailed reservation confirmation though. The e-mail does say to expect an e-mail containing self-check in details about a week before arrival.

https://resnexus.com/resnexus/reservations/book/C795864E-FC4F-43E8-BEBC-2068CE9F9B82/?NewSearch=1

Once you've chosen the dates, click on the "Check Detailed Availability" tab under the calendar.  A list of every site with either a green check mark, or a red X will let you know what is and isn't available.

I noticed that the rates increased since I made my reservation back on March 1st.  RV site w/hook-ups was $45 a night, now it's $51.67 a night.  There's a $5 per night charge for a pet.

Tent sites actually got cheaper now, I got a spot across the fence near greg's normal spot.

(the fence line is cool but a family of skunks patrols that area, and its lighted up by the restaurant next door)

STOKED!!! I think I'll get in and set up camp early Friday and try to get a sesh out there that day. Really need to organize my gear now cutting it close, but my kayak and electronics are shipshape!

I am booked at site 96 on the skunk trail and next to the restaurant. Maybe I need to change sites. Where are the good sites?

Good evening I was wondering does anybody know the coordinates to Jurassic Park at Shelter Cove? A friend is bringing up a boat

No coordinates, but I know it's about 20 miles north of the launch and it has to be a really flat day with light wind to pull it off.  You'll find high quality nearer the Cove.

Post by: LoletaEric on May 01, 2024, 07:30:52 PM
I'm taking a few people out Friday, 730AM to 11ish.  One slot still open - max 4 guys.

Please send a message if you're interested.  It's a refresher and check-up on the current conditions and bite.

EDIT:  Slot filled.

Forecasts coming in look very good, with typical north winds but lighter into midday and early afternoon than many recent days.

Someone's going to catch a Pacific...   :smt007

If you can get a site near a tree its a plus. Shade and potential wind break. Keep your cooler and bait sealed up or you may find an unwelcome visitor nosing in your stuff.

I left my soft sided bait cooler unzipper a few years back overnight. Woke up in the middle of the night and needed to pee, but when I unzipped the tent door I was looking down the barrel of the business end of a skunk balls deep in the frozen anchovies. Sucker took his time too  :smt044

Used to hit Magic Seaweed and Stormsurf a lot.  Windy is high on my list now, and NWS is always an anchor.

Well I’ve been out with Eric four times in the past, and I have another trip booked later in the summer. Eric has told me over, and over to not let the fish dangle in the water on the clip. He says keep them in the back under burlap.

Well today I didn’t take his advice, and had 1 nice ling & 2 nice rock fish in the water. My son and I were alone but Alex was off in the distance, and a group of kayaks a ways off.

I had a nasty line tangle I was dealing with when all of a sudden a sea lion grabbed my fish and instantly flipped me over. The sea lion started swimming away with my fish, and kayak.

Alex noticed me floundering in the water and headed right to me. I grabbed on to the side of his boat and then he went to retrieve my kayak.

By this time there was a swarm of kayaks ready to offer help. Alex flipped my kayak back over, and I jumped back in. Eric showed up, and untangled my rod for me.

Super grateful for all of the help to get back to fishing. I lost my net, slow pitch rod, box of jigs, knife, and pliers.

Lesson learned the hard way…..tomorrow I will be keeping my fish under burlap in the back of my kayak.

I am very grateful for your quick assistance. My son asked if I was afraid, and I responded that I wasn’t afraid at all. I guess taking sea kayaking classes 1 & 2, and two surf zone classes plus’s being dressed for immersion made it second nature for me.

Having the sea lion take off with my kayak would of been of concern had I been alone.

Thank you Eric for another awesome fun event at the cove.  It was great getting to see the gang again.  And thank you Brandi and her helpers for all the creative Gyotaku t-shirt fish prints.

On tournament day I ended up catching multiples of 9 different species along with a sea cucumber.  I caught Blacks, Blues, Browns, Cabs, Chinas, Greenlings, Lings, Olives, and Vermillions.

One more day at the Cove before I haul my truckloads of gear and goodies back home.  I'll take some time to download photos and get caught up on life (and sleep).  For now:

Huge Congrats to Kyle Monte / Midwest for his well earned victory and crowning as Angler of the Day for GSXVIII.  He brought in a 37 inch lingcod and a 21 inch vermillion to secure the victory by several inches over 2nd place Kendall Cobine and Adam Dunaway in 3rd.

Potluck, Taco Shack, Shuland and the entire weekend vibe was off the hook.  I can't overstate how wonderful it was to be with the community again.  I really didn't realize how much I've missed putting on the event and engaging with the people.

Big thanks to Brandi for another outstanding Gyotaku event on Sunday.  Big thanks to everyone for bringing so much love and joy to the Cove.

What a great weekend! Thank you Eric for getting this event set up and thank you to everyone's help in making this an amazing event! My boys and I had a blast camping/ fishing and exploring a new part of our coast we haven't explored yet.  Looking forward to going back to Shelter cove with the rest of the Family soon! Of course looking forward to next year!

Had a great day on the water, conditions where epic! Had a couple of huge takedowns but didn't get them to stick. Caught some nice fish but nothing huge..... But my good buddy Adam put on a clinic next to me! Congrats on 3rd place bro!! I'll count that as a Team win :smt003

Saturdays fish tacos where epic! Had my oldest son going back for seconds. They told me they liked those fish taco's better than mine, so I guess I need to upgrade my cooking techniques.

My Sons had a great time doing their 1st Gyotaku printing and made some great mothers day gifts for Mamma who had to work on mothers day.

Epic Event! Epic People and an Epic Location!

Thank you again Eric for making sure that I made it out to this event!

Thanks for all the pics and reports, y'all!

I was hoping to make it up there to just chill, but my daughter would've had to miss her basketball tournament finals on Friday evening (which her and her team won) and her soccer tournament finals on Saturday afternoon (which her and her team won).

Hopefully there will be a GMSXIX next year!

there were many great memories from the past few days, but a few stand out:

running across Eddie on the 1 commuting home as MDoka_Matt, Isao and I made our way through the upper bay area

watching Tractor Dan win one of the gaffs I made. F*** Yeah!

finally making it to Shueland, my first visit was the definition of FUN

certainly the orca drive by

...and then about a thousand tiny spots of hilarious joy as I got to camp with a couple of the best people  I know

thinking about all these is almost bringing tears to my sunburned and salt encrusted beady little eyes  :smt044

Thank you to Eric for creating this wonderful monster, to Matt and Isao for giving me the opportunity to attend, to Roger and Dennis for the hamachi and JD shots, and to all the great fisherfolk that I've missed seeing for the past few years.

I had fun  :smt006

Fished my favorite method of a live blue but had no luck and I'm pretty sure I ended up submitting the smallest rockfish, at the time I was unaware you could simply not report LOL. Fun times everyone! Got a glimpse of the baby orcas' dorsal, and it was the largest dorsal I have ever seen!

What an amazing weekend. Big thanks to Mother Nature for the weather and thank you Eric for bringing the brotherhood back together again. I fished for a few hours both friday and Saturday. I caught a ling,a few verms, and assorted blacks etc. Huge thanks to Chadrock,02B,Joneszy,Butete and his wife Jingle for helping me make the tacoshack happen. also thanks to Fisheducator and others for making the bad-ass crema. Most of all, thanks to all the people who were so generous with the fillet donations. I have long felt it important to me for us to come together and enjoy our bounty of the sea together while it is fresh. It feels right and tastes good. Cant wait for the next one.

Finally!  Got around to unpacking and checking out my cool shirts.  Did anyone notice the year is not indicated on them?

For sure, Jerry.  I had originally worked with a local artist back in early 2020, Shawn Griggs - great guy who I've known since we were kids, and he has a studio in Ferndale - and I purchased the art for GS14 that was exactly like this year's art, but it had "14th Annual" above it.  When it came around to this year, I asked my printer if he could alter what I'd sent to him 5 years ago but never used - he said no problem.  So this year's art became a more general form of the Gimme Shelter piece.  I was very aware of it, but I felt that I should use it as it was rather than trying to engineer a new piece with more specific information about the year.  Admittedly, I feel I learned a lesson by dropping a bunch of money on the art back in early 2020, and then having to cancel due to covid.  One of the incentives for me to hold the event again was to use this art, and I'm very glad that I did.  I plan to use it in the future and just get different colored shirts and hoodies, but that plan could change.  More importantly, I realized in executing the tournament again that I really missed the community and interactions.

The gear is fun to produce, and I'll always try to make it special.  I appreciate the feedback and will consider looking at how I can use Shawn's art and at the same time provide a date reference.

Right on.   :smt001

I might get creative with it and add not just the year, but the past years we couldn't hold the event with a slash through them using a paint pen.  Ha!   :smt004

After the raffle had just wrapped up and most everyone had cleared out, Sonny and his buddy Fabian were in the campground pavilion with me and Sonny asked about a Trophy Trough I might make for him.  That made me realize what I almost forgot to do.  I exclaimed, "oh fuck!" and ran out of the pavilion to my truck.  I'd made a custom 48" Trophy Trough for Captain Jake Mitchell, as a thank you for selling the raffle tickets and an acknowledgement of his status as a legitimate ambassador for Shelter Cove.

I presented the big Trough to Jake as the last move of the evening for the event, with only a handful of people there.  I wish I would've remembered to present him with it while everyone was still there.  Jake was stoked, and he told those of us standing there that he samples fish for a government science agency using a janky old trough.  Now he's got a new tool for the measuring and something to remember us kayakers by.

I want to extend a big thanks to Eric for the invite, it made my day when I got it, and has really helped me be in good spirits since then as well.
Henry and I had a great time, Tall Matt made it with us as well, and my GF too.
due to my own brain (its been a socially tough few years) we mostly stayed around The Tides hotel until sunday
We had a blast doing family things with the kiddo all dang day fri and sat, mostly watching him in the tidepools and the beach in front of the tides.
We did make it out on the water for a while during the tournament but due to health issues I didnt stay out long and just watched henry punch through the waves in front of the launch for over an hour, pretty funny watching a hobie come through wave after wave after wave. must be something about being lighter than the kayak itself to not getting bogged in the surf?
Sunday we made it over for gyotaku and boy was that fun making awesome shirts with Brandi and David! Henry has already worn his shirt to school and the sweatshirt and told everyone about his adventure.
Thank you to everyone we visited with for a wonderful and loving welcome back, it really means the world to me. Everyone was so welcoming and open for Henry and Mikaela as well, Thank you all from the bottom of my heart.

Again, Thank you Eric for putting this amazing event on for so long and reaching out, you're an amazing person!

also, henry still doesn't understand why Dennis is so nice and bad ass ;) , BTW, he wants a van like that so he can travel and be awesome like that too. he's already planning when I will take him out to use the jigs. Thank you!
