Hobie Kayaks / Re: Guide - Metal 180 MD Sprocket Installation
« on: March 25, 2024, 09:38:35 AM »
Good job Yaad! Should be bulletproof now!

2
I have been using Mark Goss' replacement bearings, available on Etsy, for almost a year now and have experienced no noise! Best money spent on the 180 drive!

3
The video does exist! I have seen it, and not that long ago! Doing what I can Poopsmith! It may not be on Youtube but is a private upload.

4
I remember seeing a video on doing the reversing lines in the spine on a Mirage Drive 180. Does anybody remember this and where could I find it? It's a bit tricky to try and do it yourself but I do recall seeing it in the last several months, either on here or YouTube.

5
The only conflict I can see at the point for May 11 is Mother's Day May 12th.

6
I'm not sure I did the right question on these. Would you have to redo the 180 reverse strings when installing them? I have also heard of folks using bungee cord to replace the idler cable.

7
Any folks have experience with these? Wouldn't you have to relocate the 180 switching thread to install?
Something definitely needs to be fixed on these bearing races.

Hobie Kayaks / Re: Another 180 drive warranty claim.

I did see the 2022 OB does have the MD180 still. Yeah, loosen those cables a bit! Something I discovered yesterday while reassembling my new spine and just for fun I put the old spine back together and noticed the one bad bearing race was missing a bearing! I am extremely careful when taking these drives apart and put parts in order in a muffin tin. I have some Delrin Stock and cut a new piece for it. Hmm. That could have led to the drives early failure since the other bearings and races were pristine. Just sayin, Hobie.

I also have had problems with the MD180 drive in my 2019 OB. Had bearing problems going back several years with cracked or flattened bearings and finally had the spine replaced in Oct 21. Worked OK for 5 months then started to make a lot of noise so I took it apart. Found the bearings to be in excellent shape but one of the races was worn and pitted. The other races looked great without a mark. Hobie has been working on this design and have improved the bearings. I emailed with Hobie and they are aware of the spline problems. If they were to offer a recall and replace with a GT drive with kick up fins, I wouldn't complain! Anyway, Hobie stood behind their product and replaced the spine 6 months out of warranty! I would suggest you check the tension on the cables as both times my drive went to Hobie the cables were so tight there was no flex to them. I backed them off a little to get some flex before use, even Hobie's tech support recommends doing that and has talked with their people about making the cables too tight. I don't treat my drive badly, washing with fresh water after every use, and no jack rabbit starts! I find it interesting that new Hobie's are using the GT model with kick up fins rather than the MD 180.

Craftsmen's Corner / Re: Bearing race repair MD 180 Mirage drive?

My current thought is to get a new spine, fix it up like new, and sell it for a GT model!

Yeah, I was thinking of some kind of shim material like really thin stock stainless. I used to cut up shims from soda cans before.

Craftsmen's Corner / Bearing race repair MD 180 Mirage drive?
« on: March 31, 2022, 12:33:22 PM »
I have a MD180 drive in my 2019 Outback that is making a lot of noise again. This drive has required more work and upkeep than any other drive I've owned! I have had 2 V2 drives, a GT drive (the best!) and this POS. It has been in the shop 3 times for noise and had the spine replace 6 months ago. Luckily the previous work came under Hobie warranty and I was not out of pocket money, just time. Well, warranty was up in Nov of 21. I don't abuse them, I remove when landing, I freshwater wash after every use. The bearings actually looked pretty good, but the end race, one that is nearest the kayaker, is getting worn and I was considering trying a epoxy putty to build it back up a bit as someone suggested. Anybody ever try this? Any better ideas rather than a new spine assembly? How long does Hobie warranty new parts?

I have also had issues with the 180 drive. I bought a piece of 1/4 inch Delrin and cut my own bearings. The scoring on the spine eventually ruined those and I sent the drive in to Hobie for a new spine and bearings a couple of months ago. It came back way too tight on the drive cables so I backed the nuts off a bit so I could flex the cables and it has worked well since. There was a post on the Hobie Forums about the overtightning of those cables.

Great write up Eric! It was a great day at the Cove for sure! I know I won the Lotto Saturday, getting on the water late (9am) and hooking up to a 35" salmon within 10 minutes of launching. Been doing this for over ten years now and will cherish the moment, but realize I was in the right place at the right time for that fish and it might not happen again for awhile! My first one in all that time! Photo by David Bradfield.

General Talk / Re: Kayak Dogs

I take Brodie once in a while but only on brackish or fresh water areas. Sea Lions can snatch a dog off your kayak when on the salt and that's it. He wears a PFD which is very useful if he goes overboard and you need to haul his soggy butt back on board! He is really into fishing and will bark and get agitated if the rod twitches, let alone bring a fish in and the whole area will hear about it! What he really loves, however, is the beach time and the chuck it ball launcher. I think sometimes the only reason he goes on these trips is to get to the beach and ball session!
