General Fishing Tips / Re: Halibut Rig - tie my own
« on: March 17, 2023, 06:20:20 PM »
The treble hooks really tear up the fish. Better not to use them. It’s not like we are subsistence fishing. And the halibut are going to take a beating this year with Salmon season closed. I’m going to use barbless hooks as most of the halibut I catch around alameda are shakers.

Gearing Up and Rigging Up / Re: When is a 2-speed reel worth it?
« on: March 02, 2023, 09:16:29 PM »
I have a Penn Long Beach 65 with a 2.5:1 gear ratio.  I brought it out to the Faralons on a party boat in the fall.  I wanted to try the low gear and went down 150- 200 feet or so.  It was super easy to crank a fish up but it took forever and I quickly switched to a faster reel.  My Penn 25n Fathom with 4.8:1 seems about right at that depth. I don’t think the lower gear would be fun at 300 feet. But I’m still going to pack it when I get a chance to fish deeper water next year.

Thanks. I have one that I love and just picked up a second.

I seem to catch a couple keepers every year but mostly lots of shakers. Living in alameda it’s too convenient a destination.

I went out at the ARW on 8/7 from 6:00-9:30.  Went out past the sailboat and down to the cans.  Water cleared up by the cans.  No shakers, no nibbles, no nothing.  One other kayaker came out and caught a shaker. I saw someone get a shaker off the rock wall while coming in.

Thanks for the report.  I live and work in alameda.  The water has been that color all week in the estuary.  I have been trying to decide between Pacifica and the rock wall.  I’m going to stay close to home.

General Fishing Tips / Re: Fish mat/ cutting board

Just use a broken down cardboard box.  The halibut won’t slip and u can toss it in the recycling when your done.

General Talk / Re: Kayak pedaling shoes?

For those using SPD pedals, have you tried getting out of them when upside down, under water?  I realize u can loosen them up, but still seems pretty sketchy to be locked into your kayak.

Gearing Up and Rigging Up / Re: Knife suggestions?
« on: January 25, 2022, 09:35:05 PM »
I had a spyderco salt and it was a nice knife up until I dropped it into sf bay.   Now I have two stainless moras.  They are $15, razor sharp, and seem to hold up well as last not as I rinse them after having them in the salt.

I used to surf OB as well.  There are very few days where it would be possible to make it out.  Be prepared to go swimming if you decide to give it a go.

Safety First / Re: Treble Hook in My Ear
« on: June 16, 2021, 11:20:15 AM »
Two weeks or so ago as I was getting out of the water at ARW, a boater at the ramp was asking for wire cutters.  He had two treble hooks from a crank bait buried in his hand.   Eventually, he found someone with split ring pliers and was able to remove the lure.  After seeing that, I added those to the kayak.

Fast forward two weeks and I managed to get a hook buried in the finger.  Now I'm adding wire cutters.

The weather was great. A little bumpy early but it got glassy. Lots of shakers. I didn’t hear anyone getting keepers.

I have a Trevala M. I wish I had purchased the ML. Your probably okay with either. I have used the M with 1 pound balls at the Faralons but its more than u need for halibut in the bay. I tend not to use the rod. It seems most people on this board get thr ML.

When I looked into making a bamboo gaff, the hard part was finding Calcutta bamboo. You can find it on line but it Wasn't practical to purchase. I ended up making one from wooden dowel and coating it with epoxy to waterproof it.

General Talk / Re: Jellyfish in Eyes

If you have health insurance. Go to hospital. It’s not worth risking your eyesight.  I delayed two ER trips this year and regretted it both times.
