Fish Talk / Re: Rockfish ID Guides & Limit
« on: August 22, 2023, 07:57:10 AM »
> I heard all that. If you have to ask, it's all no take.

What kind of proper fisherman is calling out on the radio for help on fish ID that they have on a hook, out of the water in their lap, etc.? Learn up BEFORE you get on the water, and if you don't know for sure you can keep it, it goes back in the water immediately.

That's really bad.

Of course, since youtube and instagram and BiG LImiTZ and RIPPING LIPZ the ratio of proper fisherman seems like it's going down rapidly.

I'm tired, but does this mean what I think it means?

Always appreciate your reports and your approach to fishing, sportsmanship, and nature. Thanks!

Wanted To Buy / Re: Wanted: A Smaller and Simpler Kayak

I have a Viking Profish GT to sell if you are interested.
https://www.vikingkayaks.co.nz/shop/kayaks/profish+gt+-+ultra+stable+fishing+kayak+2489

Was a demo boat at Headwaters when Dan's shop was open.

Just under 12' long. Comes with removable tackle pod, which is convenient to remove when you are loading. (I have a Viking Profish Reload as my main fishing kayak, and love it.)

Happy to make a deal if you are interested in getting in back on the water. I can take some pictures if you might be interested. In Sacramento.

Heard about the Challenge while checking out the Scamp sailboat by Gig Harbor Boat Works (and lots of homemade ones). Pretty cool sailing challenge, with lots of Hobies in the mix.

Nowhere Man,

I just got that same trap. Any tips of how you set/place/bait it for good results on squirrels.

Thanks!

Also check your mono for real nicks after a good fish or working a snag off. I'd always rather keep fishing, but I talk myself into the one minute to cut off the nicked part for good line again.

For near shore rockfishing, I use 20lb mono. Not hard too hard to break off and enough to land anything I ever hook.

I'm seeing 6' at 8 and 8' at 9 with 10-15mph winds - both sound like no fun to me.

Hard to think $5 for day use is some kind of unfair price that keeps folks away.

Thanks for the report - sounds like a great time. Last time I went by Silver and Caples (late May?) it looked like the middle of winter still.

Never heard of a ned rig before - what color was working for you (if you don't mind saying!).

Thanks!

Such cool birds. Neat to see them grabbing blue rockfish in the ocean.

Definitely a fan of the big Sterilite bin or two. Off the water, everything (PFD, wetsuit, gloves, booties, fish gripper, etc.) all go into a plastic bin or two to head home. Only rinse the rods/reels at the shore.

Then a big rinse off and dry at home, usually in one big bin with some neoprene/wetsuit "shampoo" and one big rinse bin. Hang up to dry. Much more fun in July in the backyard sun than it is in rainy December when you have to dry everything on a clothes drying rack over the bathtub with a fan blowing on it.
