Bullards Bar Fish'n'Chill Friday 5/12-Sunday 5/14, 2023

Hey all, planning a Fish n chill at Bullards Bar, Dark Day Camp/Launch the weekend of May 12-14th, 2023

We're going to catch some of those *Monster* Kokanee Salmon that lurk the depths of Bullards Bar.  These Kokes are the stuff of legend (said nobody)….if you eat one, you'll be so satisfied and stuffed…you might just eat 5 more.  There are also some bass and trouts to be had, but the Koke bite at BB is really a fun one.

We'll base out of the Dark Day Campground and Dark Day boat launch.  Friday night should be some campfires and barley pops to be had.  Saturday morning fishing, Saturday night we'll have a pot luck.  It has also been suggested we have some sort of fish competition, with a buy-in pot.  Sounds fun, still need to work out the details…after all, a sub-legal bass would still be bigger than a nice spring Koke from Bullards.  If we have a comp, I would plan on it being photo based - if you want to keep and eat the fish - do it, but I wouldn't want anyone to feel compelled to keep a fish, just to have it measured.

For those not familiar with Bullards, it’s a super nice place to go fishing.  If you go on a weekday, you'll have the lake to yourself…and be listening for any unwanted banjos.  Come on a weekend, especially in the summer, and you'll need to share the lake with a few folks.  Spring can be gorgeous up there, you get the early morning crisp air of the mountains, the unmistakable smell of pine in the air, and generally a lot of -----quiet---- which is nice.  The Kokes tend to be easy to find, but can hide on some days, they are small, with a limit of ten.  They cook very nicely whole, or just slice them in half, and pull the bones out after cooking.  Personally, I prefer the small BB Kokes to the larger kokes in Fallen Leaf Lake - I cannot yet compare them to the larger cokes over at Whiskeytown.

Camping spaces are limited so get one now if you want to join, and ideally plan to share it with another NCKA camper.

Agenda
   - Friday 5/12 pre-fish and/or arrive
      ○ Friday evening, walk campfire to campfire, chatting
   - Saturday 5/13
      ○ AM Fish
      ○ Afternoon: Biggest Fish comp picture turn in
      ○ PM Pot luck

04/25/23: for the fun competition, I' thinking all fish must be caught between 7am and noon, either text the pic to me, or we'll setup a WhatsApp group so all can see (would be more fun as long as all have WhatsApp).  In the case of a tie, we'll look at the second fish.  Everyone throw some $$ into the pot for the prize ($20? or $10 each?), we'll do a 50%/30%/20% split for 1, 2 and 3 (assuming we have 10 or more fishing).  Never done this before so any who are going - feel free to provide feedback.

For the potluck, I'm thinking start at 5. more on the food later.

the list I have so far
1. Brian (bbt95762) and Elena Tucker (non Yaker): Site 4T

Just checked the Dark Day campsite reservations. Looks like they are all booked for that weekend. If anyone else wants a spot you will have to double up with one of us or possibly use one of the other nearby campsites.

Schoolhouse campground is the next closest spot. It's wide open right now.

Brian, adding a friend, Adrian (Wolf74) to the list. he's a cool dude but way uglier than I am. I we cant get him in the spot with us, hopefully he can buddy up with one of the others from our group.              I have fished it the last two weeks in a row. easy limits every time. They are averaging 11-13" now.     Someone wanted to know my setup so here goes:                                                                              Eagle Claw Featherlight Rods paired with Abu Garcia Max DLC reels. 10lb. main with a weight slider to a Chain swivel. I use 3oz torpeedo weights on the slider. 1 or 2oz will work too but i like the 3oz because I can see it on my sonar and can get my rig to the right depth. 3' leader to a 4" dodger and 8 to 12" to the lure of choice.                                                                                                              My go to dodgers are chrome with Moonglow and Pink&Green splatters.                                                        Got to lures are Paulina Peak Hot Pink Micro Hoochies, then Pink or Orange Flutter Bugs and Tahoe Spinners. I've also caught them on Wiggle hoochies, Wedding Rings, Glow Bugs, HumDingers and Crip Lures. Almost anything in Hot Pink or Orange will get them.                                                        Anise sented corn is #1, Garlic is #2 and Sardine or Tuna is #3.                                                          Hope this helps.                                                                                                                              Kevin

Thats great posting up a chill, Brian.

The derby setup for fish pic competition is the way to go. I think all derbies should be set up as CPR and keep what you plan on taking/eating.  Especially for the saltwater. With so many different clubs descending on a area repeatedly for competitions. It really should be the way of the future. My 2 cents.

Ken and I were there Yesterday(Sunday). The campground was open so we checked it out. There's plenty of room at each site. There was a huge group of  Runner/racers up there for an event. Most sites had 4-6 tents in them so there is plenty of room for anyone that wants to come. Fishing remains Hot, Hot. We launched at 7 and limited by 10:30. could have limited by 8:30 but everyone in our group and the others I talked to were getting short strikes in the morning. Finally figured it out. They wanted more aggressive lures like Flutter bugs, spinners and wiggle hoochies, also tolled at higher speeds. Usually it's micro hoochies at 1.3 but Sunday it was 1.6-1.8mph. Didnt have to go very far either. There was a large school just past the the floating pisser. Stayed there the whole time making runs back and forth through them.

I'm in 2D for Thursday and Friday nights. Turns out checkout is at noon on Saturday, so I may have to park at someone's space for the afternoon until I leave after potluck. I think I have room for another person/car at my site but it would be same situation - pack up around noon-ish Saturday. Check in is at 2pm, so I may even get a Thursday evening of fishing in.

I don't think they have a gate that locks, or even a staffed booth...so I assume? you can arrive whenever.  I should be there by 4pm tomorrow - so call me and I'll double check

See y'all bright and early! Hoping to get to the ramp around 6:30 or 7:00am.

I packed optimistically and brought some glide baits so I can catch a new record spot after I limit on kokanee

Wow, what a fun weekend. The weather, the wind, the food, the people really could not have been much better…and the kokes and bass were able and willing.

Elena and I arrived Thursday afternoon, met up with Kevin, Ken, and Adrian.  We got the trailer all setup, plenty of room to park and live in 4T, I think at one point we had 3 trucks and 2 trailers in the 3 parking spaces - I like that!   Joe and Mabel showed up a bit later. The guys went out for an afternoon/evening fish run, water was glass, and I think they all got limits (though most were CnR).  Elena and I walked the beach and enjoyed some wine.  Kevin cooked up some amazing Tri trip over a wood fire, Ken made some delicious beans to go with it, Joe brought a nice salad, and Elena and I some garlic bread, we cooked that on the wood fire too.  We all ate well, stayed up too late, had  a great time.

Friday morning we hit the water for a morning session, the guys did well, I only got two in the boat, but had a great time.  Came back to the camp for beer, food, maybe a nap.  All the other campers showed up, Corey, Julian and Brie, John and Sam, Al and Bacon.

We all went out for an afternoon session, once again the fish were able and willing. Back to camp for dinner, then a big campfire, lots of stories and plenty of libations flowing.

Saturday Morning was beautiful, I was at the ramp by 6:30, just as Al was launching.  I had a really good feeling, my tackle was dialed in from the day before, today it was going to be great.  At 7am we called out on the radio that the comp had started, yaks were scattered around the lake, and the calls from various boats began "First Fish in the boat" "long distance CnR" "Second Fish" "Halfway to a limit" "Finally my first fish in the boat" "Good Afternoon".  At the end of the day, I only landed two, honestly should have had more, poor technique lost me at least two more…beat myself up a bit, but had a great day on the water.

We met up for the awards ceremony, which included the money in the hat as well as stickers from Joe, baits from Kevin, and a gift from Ken as well. Kevin ran this for us all - thanks Kevin.  I believe it went like this
Longest Stringer: John
Longest single Koke: Brie
Longest non-Koke: John

We also met up with Matt (Canadian Jerkey) after the tournament, he was on the water, and joined for a while before he had to get back home for Dad duties.  Adrian had to take off on Friday night, so he could take his Dad to an event on Saturday.  Nice to see guys working NCKA fun into their family plans.

That night we had a very nice Potluck, some of the best food I've had while camping.  And some homemade cookies and Dutch oven cobbler at a fire by the lake, courtesy of Julian and Brie.

Sunday morning was Mothers Day brekkie and pack out for us.

I know my fishing stories are typically more about the fish, but for me, that was not the highlight of the weekend, Elena and I both really enjoyed the company and comradery, hopefully we can do this again.

Had a great time this weekend chilling with some of the best of the NCKA crew.  I left my house at 7:00 and arrived about 12:30 and after unhitching my mighty  tiny trailer drove back down to the water and launched with Bacon to see if we could score some fish.  It took a bit to find some willing kokes but finally was able to hookup my first fish.  I only used three setups all weekend because they were all hit easily.  Pink hoochie with a splatter uv pink 6" sling blade. And one of those small shrimp imitations Split Milt made popular with kokane uv pink dodger.  Later used a orange hoochie, that was it.  I must have lost a dozen fish this weekend, but it was so much fun hooking up so often I guess it didn't matter when I lost them.  Thanks for the great weekend and good company both off and on the water.  I was great therapy for me coming out of this dreadful winter.  Getting back into the game was a lot of fun. Hope we can do it again soon!

Had a great time this past weekend at the meet up although my stay was a little abbreviated.  Just wanted to thank Brian and his wonderful wife, Kevin and Ken for letting my hang out at their camp. I didn't get a chance to meet everyone as I left early but was happy to meet the folks that I did. I came a way with a hell of a sunburn but otherwise it was a great time. Thanks everyone!

Sam and I had such a good time this weekend. It was great getting to spend some time with fellow NCKA folks. I feel like it has been far too long!

Sam and I were all loaded up Thursday and there was no rush to get going on Friday so we rolled out of Windsor around 730. We took the scenic route and made a few stops along the way.

Around 10am as we were approaching Marysville/Yuba city we get a text from Corey who had already arrived. In essence it said “BUG SPRAY!!” Thank goodness for that warning. We hit the drug store and loaded up on bug spray. The mosquitos were thick but manageable with the spray.

We rolled in to camp a little before noon. I’ve never been to the campground before and didn’t realize it was all on a hill! Our campsite was at the bottom of the hill. Several hundred yards down a steep ass hill. Ugh.

The cool thing was just below camp was the water with a nice beach area to haul out the kayaks and have a nice fire.

I fished a little on Friday before dinner. Middle of the day but still caught a few. I got some pointers from Sam and I think I went 2 for 5, keeping one. Sam kept a few as well. She was clearly out fishing me and lost no fish.

Her secret was a short downrigger set back (25 feet) and reel like crazy. Get the fish to the boat as fast as possible and give them no chance to escape.

Saturday rolled around and we had the little money between friends tourney. I tied up a Trinidad tackle p-Tex spoon in pink with black dots 18 inches behind a 5.5 inch sling blade dodger in UV with pink herring bone.

I set my gear back 25 feet and fished between 35-50 feet. My set up was running the spoon about an inch ahead of the tandem hooks with a single piece of pink corn on the trailing hook. The spoon was basically a mini dodger for the hooks and corn. I topped it all with some pro cure Kokanee special oil.

The first fish was landed within 15 minutes. I went 10 for 10 over the next 2.5 hrs with a bathroom break on the floating island (10 out of 10, would use again lol)

Those 10 barely edged out Corey and his 10.

I then grabbed the bass gear and started looking for biggest other fish. I tried a bunch of gear and settled on a 1/8 oz ball head with a 2.8 keitech. I waded thru a bunch of 12 inch bass to land 1 that was 14.75. Just big enough to take biggest other fish category.

Later in the day we did some swimming and self rescue practice. Then the awesome potluck and lakeside fire where Julian and Brie cooked dessert in a Dutch oven with the coals.

Overall just a great weekend and a lot of fun with everyone.

Pictures to follow.

My lumpy tarpon 140 is strapped to the top of my wife's prius and ready to go.

See y'all bright and early! Hoping to get to the ramp around 6:30 or 7:00am.

I packed optimistically and brought some glide baits so I can catch a new record spot after I limit on kokanee

You gotta post the picture of that monster bass you caught on the glide bait!!

I'll sound off here too and echo the rest--what a phenomenal weekend. It was great to meet all of those whom I had not met yet! (Ken, Kevin, Matt)

Fishing was great--not wide open for me, but consistent enough to keep it fun and engaging.

We saw so much wildlife--Osprey, bald eagles, and even an extremely endangered California Condor (pic for proof!)

We were reluctant to use the big metal bear box on account of it being 140 degrees inside and guaranteed to nuke our cooler. I've spent many months in bear country and have had few encounters in developed campgrounds. I figured we'd be ok until bedtime, so we thought.

After beach fire and peach cobbler on Saturday night, Brie and I returned to the campsite to find our cooler missing. Brie asked if I moved it, I said no, and looked to my left down the embankment next to our site. Oh shit.

Our stuff was strewn everywhere, and the cooler itself was flipped over. Upon further investigation, most of the food was in tact and usable. The only thinks missing--a block of cheese, and a bag with 14 kokanee in it. We cleaned up, kicking ourselves for not using the bear box, and possibly harming the bear by habituating it to human food, and possible plastic ingestion.

Of course, before bed, we locked every smellable thing we had, and what remained of our food, into the bear box.

I was awoken at first light to the sound of something sliding accross the campsite, and knew immediately who the visitor was. "HEY BEAR!" I yelled. The response was the quintessential grunt and growl of a black bear. I grabbed my stainless water bottle and clanked it aggressively. We heard some branches crack and brush rustle, and the bear was gone. We got out of the tent then, to find the camp box, which contains no smellable items, to be slid almost over the same embankment that we found our cooler downthe night before.

We told Corey the story, and, like the stand up gent that he is, gave us his bag of fish to take home. It would save him the trouble of processing, and we all know that Corey's freezers are already full anyway  :smt002 Thank you Corey.

Lesson learned for sure. The cooler has some sweet bite marks in it now, and will remind us of this story and this trip.

Anyway, thank you Brian and all for the great weekend.

forgot to mention it, Saturday afternoon ~4, I go back to the trailer, and the cooler is halfway up the hill, opened, stuff dragged out...oops, I guess there are bears.  I put everything back, tell Elena later...nah, must be raccoons, I said no, it dragged the cooler UP the hill.  Didn't get anything, that morning I moved the cokes from the cooler to the fridge.  That area just didn't feel very Beary to me...I was wrong....read the signs brian, read the signs 'bear country'

Wow, I didn’t know about the bears. I put my coolers in the metal boxes but they had no latches so we’re useless. Corey left his cooler out and we had no issues. With the exception of my Thursday evening skunk, it was a great weekend with great company and pretty good fishing. I finally got my BB limit of 10 on Friday plus a couple small bass. Saturday I had my hottest streak of 3 in 30 minutes but that didn’t last.
Mabel had a great time as well.
Thanks for organizing this Brian.
I see that Stampede is open and beckoning with larger Kokes and cooler temps. (And no sleeping on the ground required.)

My turn...

Great weekend! It was very nice meeting a few new people who i've 'known' only by NCKA handles for a while. Fishing was solid on kokes, company and food even better. I didn't have any run-ins with a bear, but I can say some of the Yuba City party animals are far more abominable!

Looking forward to making this an annual event! Thanks for organizing it, Brian!

Until next time!

Smoked up some kokes last night, and also this morning.

last night:
1. filleted
2. 50/50 Salt/Brown Sugar
3. 2 hours on dry rub
4. rinse and dry
5. smoked on Traeger ~1 hour on Smoke setting (Old Traeger), Temp from 140-180*

Delicious, Elena loved them, we enjoyed on crackers with cream cheese

Overnight (this morning):
1. split in half and removed spine along with any bones that joined in
2. 1-3 salt/Brown shugar
3. overnight in fridge
4. rinse and dry
5. on drying rack in fridge for 1+ hours
6. smoked on Traeger ~1 hour on Smoke setting (Old Traeger), Temp from 140-180*

enjoyed on cracker with sour cream this morning.  Also delicious, less salty - the salt helped on the cracker/cream cheese.  This has a milder flavor

I'd forgotten how much I love to eat Kokes

Looks Delish Brian. Gave all my Kokes to Adrian so no smoking for me. Looks like that means a day trip up to Stampede in a week or two. It's open and the fishing is good.

Great to meet everyone and do some kokanee fishing!

My morning trip was uneventful though a bit later than would have been ideal, everyone was already on the water by the time I arrived! Naturally instead of introducing myself on the radio I mostly kept to myself and lurked around trolling.
Call it a shy streak? I managed to catch one koke near the brown-trout-pens very quickly, but couldn't put together a pattern. By noon I had three, each one deeper than the last. I moved from brad's kokanee cut plugs to teardrop dodgers and purple pink hoochies.

Come noon I made my way to the beach, donated to AOTY prizes in a roundabout way and did my best to make friends! It turns out quite a few folks here have reckless motorcycle histories and I had fun reminiscing.

Since I had somewhat limited time I excused myself from camp after lunch and decided I would try my luck at worst-time-of-day fishing. My efforts were rewarded by a 4th and final koke and my first glide-bait fish!

Young bass are so ambitious.

I can't wait for the next one!

Here is how my kokes turned out.  tldr, bit salty not sweet enough with 1/2 sugar and salt dry cured overnight.  Salt was way more corase than I expected, and a lot of it rinsed off, but still too much.  Will do 1:4 next time salt to sugar and see how it comes out.  Still, pretty tasty!  Will make a dip out of the rest of it.
