Title: Diver of the Year 2012: DOTY
Post by: BigJim on December 20, 2011, 09:54:53 AM
Let me know if you have any interest in doing a year long friendly competition between divers.

Similar to AOTY, and the first requirement to participate would be that you would have to join AOTY (pay up)
to support the site in order to play.

You can pay for AOTY right now, see the box in the upper right hand corner of the front page for a Paypal link.

Your entries would NOT be entered or count toward AOTY but we would keep track over here, and have a few prizes
for top finishers or biggest entry in each category etc. Prizes TBD and announced.

If you want to play AOTY, see this thread for all the official 2012 rules:

http://www.norcalkayakanglers.com/index.php/topic,35010.0.html (http://www.norcalkayakanglers.com/index.php/topic,35010.0.html)

If you want to play DOTY, sign up and pay via the AOTY PayPal link and then let me know via PM so I can keep a list of participants.

A few rules off my top of my head (aka borrowed from AOTY):

1.   All entries (fish, abalone, scallops) must be taken while freediving without any assistance (no other person can touch spear or abalone iron throughout entire process).
2.   Can be from shore or from kayak or dive board. No motoroized vessels or mothershipping or SCUBA.
2.   Photographic evidence of fish/abalone/scallop size (total length) against a measuring device must be provided. Abalone and scallops can be measured with ab gauge/calipers etc. Fish must be measured in a natural position with either the mouth shut or slightly ajar. The mouth can not be pulled/extended open.  Abuse of this rule will result in that entry automatically being disqualified.
3.   The pool runs from January 1, 2012 to December 31, 2012. Fish/abalone/scallops taken prior to payment of entry fees are ineligible.
4.   All fish/abalone/scallops entered must be caught south of the California/Oregon border and north of the southern borders of the following counties Monterey, Kings, Tulare and Inyo.
5.   The pool covers the following categories: Lingcod, Cabezon, Greenling, Blue/Black RockFish, Gopher/Black and Yellow RockFish, Kelp/Grass RockFish, Copper RockFish, Vermillion RockFish, Olive RockFish, China RockFish, TreeFish, Calico Bass, MonkeyFace Prickleback, California Halibut, Pacific Halibut, Perch (all kinds), Sheepshead, OpalEye, White SeaBass, Red Abalone, Rock Scallops, Dungeness Crab.
6.   Only fish that you can normally keep and eat (per CA DFG regulations) are eligible.
7.   The biggest fish/abalone/scallop from each diver's top ten categories will be used towards the diver’s total points.
8.   Entries must be posted within 2 weeks of being taken and photographed. No "hoarding" of entries.
9.   ALL DFG rules must be followed 100%. Period. Any breaking of any DFG rules will result in the entry being disqualified and public ridicule.
10. If you don't like the rules and don't want to play, don't! Diving is fun , and this is meant to be fun between friends as well. We all have bigger and better things to argue/stress/worry about.

AOTY is trying out a new point system where a "trophy" sized entry would be approx. 200 points...so this is what I propose for points for DOTY:

White SeaBass: 4 points/inch
GreenLing: 11 points/inch
Cabezon: 8 points/inch
Perch: 12.5  points/inch
Opaleye: 8 points/inch
California Halibut: 5 points/inch
Pacific Halbut: 4.25 points/inch
LingCod: 5 points/inch
MonkeyFace: 7.25 points/inch
Blue/Black RockFish: 8 points/inch
Gopher/Black and Yellow RockFish: 8 points/inch
Kelp/Grass RockFish: 8 points/inch
Copper RockFish: 8 points/inch
Vermillion RockFish: 8 points/inch
Olive RockFish: 8 points/inch
China RockFish: 8 points/inch
TreeFish: 8 points/inch
Calico Bass: 8 points/inch
Sheepshead: 7 points/inch
Red Abalone: 20 points/inch
Rock Scallop: 30 points/inch
Dungeness Crab: 25 points/inch

I think this can be a fun way for us divers to have a little friendly competition, and support the site at the same time.

I'll be doing this anyway, and keeping track of the biggest fish/abs/scallops I take next year anyway....

Lemme know if you are interested or have any suggestions.

 :smt006

Sincerely,

Jim

Sounds good Jim, is there a prize for last place? :)

Money is tight right now, but when I have a few free dollars, I will contribute.

It's on!  :smt003

I like the rules, Jim. They should work well. I especially like the combination of blue/black, kelp/grass, gopher/blacknyellow. That way, there shouldn't be any misidentification.

Will opaleye count as perch? Or no opaleye?

I'll sign up sometime  before Jan 1, so I can get crackin' when the New Year rolls around.

Well, opaleye are technically not perch, but they are kind of perch-like in nature. Opaleye are a SoCal fish, but like sheephead and calicos, are found on the Monterey Peninsula in decent numbers (also Santa Cruz). I've never seen one in Carmel, but I've seen many on the other side of the pensinsula.

Your call.

I'm making this stuff up as I go....If they can be ID'd easily as different than "regular" perch than I don't see why not to have them as their own category.

Same points as regular Perch I am assuming? Will add on to the list.

Let me know if you guys have other ideas of how to make this cool.

I left off Sharks and WolfEels on purpose...not very common and wouldn't want to encourage people killing them just for this....plenty of other fish on the list to get points from.

I think opaleye, if added, should be less points per inch than perch, just because they get bigger than most of the perch. Maybe 8 points per inch.

Yeah I hear ya sharky...

But if the AOTY "standard" is ~200 points for a "trophy" fish...and the state diving record was just a tad over 27 inches, then 7.25 points per inch seems about right?

I'm not very good at math, but that was my thinking?

Anybody else have any feedback on adjusting the points for MFE or any other category?

Shiiiiiet, my first pic submission will be of fuzzy on the trough, cuz I'm gonna pull a Tanya Harding on him.

Interested! But mainly to support the site and because I dive like 6 times a year total.

Oh Deo', if I had hear from Joe Tobin about you getting WSB then I'm guessing this little competition is really gonna make me persona non grata huh?  :smt010

The only suggestion I have is that with each report, participants are encouraged to throw a little trash talk in the mix.   :smt003. Because while I don't shoot many fish (and what do shoot are small), I excel at the trash.  :smt006 :smt044

I'm in....that way incase I pull a Darius at GMS I can enter a fish for Big fish in AOTY.

I say leave all the eel out, but I'd like to add a dungeness crab category....maybe 25 points per inch?

Two clarifications.

Who is tracking the totals? Will a site be set up?

Who is the committee to sort out all the BS that will happen about entries etc?  Jim, Fuzz and Rick would work.

Add a rule that committee decisions are final...NO BS this is for fun.

Cool James!

I'm down with adding a dungie catgeory, but say leave the Monkeys in. IMO Monkeys are a highly prized delicious fish that is only taken by those crazy poke polers or divers. Have seen way more reports this year of divers taking Monkeys than dungies.

Think it's better to have more categories than less to be as inclusive as possible to allow folks to try and get their 10 species/categories.

As far as how to track it all etc...I'm up for suggestions...I was thinking of asking the mods for a stickie in the Kayak Diving section and we could have the first post there have the rules, list of participants, list of prizes, and a running tally of entries/point totals per participant. Participants could report as they regularly would (or not) and then just submit a post on the DOTY thread with their entry and I could transfer their entry/points to the first post in the thread with a link to their pics of their entries?

If there is a better/simple/easier way to do it let me know what you think! I aint a website person and don't want to create more work for the mods who are already busy...

Committee to make decisions...great idea...Rick and Fuzz are studs so if they are willing to do this with me that would be cool with me, if not, then I am open to other ideas...

Yes, good call on committee decisions being final...somebody will need to have the final say on some stuff for sure...the less BS/drama etc IMO the better!

This thing will be as fun as we make it...so let's make it hella fun and have a good time with it and see how it goes!!  Figure we have until 1/1/12 to finalize details and then we can always tweak whatever doesn't work/improve it for 2013!

I'd be willing to be on the committee, if needed.

Dungies-- not many target them diving, judging by reports, but there's no harm in including them.

Monkeyface eels-- I could understand the decision to include or to exclude them. Maybe take a poll?

I'd kind of like to have them included, but my opinion is biased because I have a hole that seems to always holds a big one  :smt003

James, good point about the format. Using a thread to track it would be convenient, but make for a very long, somewhat messy thread. A site like AOTY would probably be easier to manage, but then we'd have to have someone set it up.

No seperate category for PoleSpear/Speargun, all combined...like if someone wants to use a handline or a fly rod instead of a "regular" rod and reel it would be the same for AOTY....personal choice, but end result is the same.  :smt003

Yes, any legal DFG tool allowed is all good. Take em with your bare hands if you can!   :smt003

No handicap bracket for you older guys...you have more experience and wisdom right?   :smt004

Bigger fuel tank: yes.

Though i'm no diver, i'm still gonna say crabs sound like they suck for this competition  :smt002  You should focus on fish where the point ranges are at least worthy of competition.  A legal dungie at 5 3/4 only gets as big as 8 inches from what i've seen.  Is this forager of the year, or diver of the year?  Stick to the fish is my opinion   :smt008

I changed the boars back to being completely open for the time being.  We don't have access restrictions on AOTY, so I'm not sure why we would here.

:smt010 :smt005  Come on Nate.  You and I both know that you don't shoot anything under 50.  Besides, all the seabass are in like 120 feet of water with tons of red tide and jelly fish and sharks.  I'm over it.

I'm glad the smack talk portion of this comp is taking off.  I'm gonna shoot fuzz even if the dude is no trphy, dive less than nate and still get a higher score, follow wilderness hunter in the surf and score some free gear, dive with the over 55 crowd so I can take advanatge of their senior citizen discounts, complain to rick about Jims crappy trough measuring pics with the open mouth....then cry about crawdads not being on the species list, and submit all my entries via watercolor like amadeo.....any size measurements and scale are completely at the artists discression.

edit....I'm just gonna keep adding smack as I see fit....

I'm gonna film my exploits and play them for the masses to techno trance beats like Chuck....

Fuzz and Rick are on board.

 :smt003

3 man DOTY committee of Fuzz, Rick and me (I'll be the voice of all the divers who don't actually have gills and breath underwater  :smt002 :smt005) will have final say on any disputes etc.

Fuzz and Rick are also reviewing and revising the points and categories to make them more accurate and realistic for the competition.

Always impossible to make everybody happy 100% of the time, but I'm confident the end result will be fair and provide opportunities for all divers to play, have fun and get at least 10 entries.

Gonna be good fellas!

Jim

Awesome!!!!!!

fuzz, Rick and I have been working with polepole and hoping to get the finalized rules, categories etc all posted up and ready to go by 1/1/12...

Important thing for those that want to compete is to pay via AOTY paypal (like AbMan says, it's pretty easy!) BEFORE taking any fish that you want to submit, and then take pics of catch on Hawg Trough/Measuring board...

We have decided that 2012 DOTY will be using the MOUTH CLOSED rule, so take pics accordingly!!

If the pics do not show mouth of fish closed and touching end of Hawg Trough, the submission is subject to a deduction in size and or DQ for flagrant/repeat offenders at discretion of DOTY committee.

Looking forward to seeing how this goes this year!!

Jim

First of all..."OH SHIT POPEYE'S HERE"

Second, your comment about the HH having a bad trigger is quite redundant.  :smt044 .  To those HH fans, I'm truly sorry.   :smt044 :smt044   I make fun, but karma's a bitch because whenever I dive with Fuzz and ask to borrow a gun.  He only lets me use his HH :smt010

Let me know when you take your grasshopper out on the next dive.  I definitely want to go with.  First time you saw WSB, second time was swordfish, man I just know third time will be mermaids.   :smt007

My gut feeling is to try to be as inclusive as possible (within reason)....I've dove for crabs once and it was hard chasing the boogers! If some guys are into that and want to use a dungie as one of their top ten entries I don't see the downside?
