Gearing Up and Rigging Up / Wheeleez on sale at REI
« on: October 28, 2023, 08:46:03 PM »
If anyone needs some wheeleez for the sand, REI has them on sale for $114. Haven’t seen them priced this low ever. I’ve been using the same wheeleez cart since 2017 and it’s still rolling strong

General Talk / Re: Ain’t that the Shits

Matthew and I launched at van damme at 7am and went as far south as we were comfortable with. Found an assortment of good sized black and blues, a couple chinas, and a ton of gopher rockfish. Matthew landed a nice ~22inch vermillion. Kept 16 rockfish in total. Decided to head in at 1030am as the wind was picking up. The forecast was pretty accurate at around 7ft at 6s coming from the nw, wind picking up in the late morning. Good start to the season and looking forward to getting further out next trip.

I booked a site at Van Damme from Friday-Sunday, with high hopes to fish Saturday and Sunday.  Only to realize that 1) the season actually begins on Sunday 2) Sunday is looking pretty gnarly.  Still bringing the kayak though. With a NW swell Van Damme can still be fishable.  Fingers crossed

Hi Jonathan

Let me know how your trip goes.  My wife and I will be heading the following weekend.

Paul

Hi sunsaengneem,

Will do! I know it’s pretty far out, but conditions look much better next weekend! I always book the rough weekends.

Jonathan

Worst:  I too lost my wedding ring.  Somewhere between the cans at HMB as I was fishing the reefs.  I will never forget that sickening "plunk" sound when it hit the water.  I marked the spot on my ff and phone, so my hope is that one day I'll catch a big ling at the spot and find my ring in its belly.

Best:  Was walking the dogs at Ocean Beach in July 2012 and saw hundreds of birds diving just 50 yards from shore.  Sped home and grabbed the surf rods and bucktail jigs.  The birds were still going crazy when I got back, and on my first cast I got a nice striper.  I called my dad to join me, and together we caught and released 30 striped bass.  It was like John Skinner's youtube irl.

Gearing Up and Rigging Up / Re: Downrigger recomendations?

I've had two Laketrollers for my TI that I bought in 2016. They've helped us catch many salmon in that time and they're still going strong, though not without their flaws. They're a little wobbly when you crank them in and the tension knob has some how come loose on its own once or twice. But overall, they're great. They're light, inexpensive, and best of all, they fit onto a standard Scotty mount.

I'd say start with the Laketroller and if you hate it, move up to something bigger, heavier, and more expensive.

Mine also became wobbly after a few years of use, but I was able to tighten them back up with this

General Fishing Tips / Re: Crab snare line rating?

You can rubber band your bail to prevent it from flipping midcast. This has probably saved me a few hundred dollars in snares over the years

For long salmon trolling days: cliff bars, bagels, lots of water, Liquid IV

O she will have a blast with the rockfish no doubt. I am packing light and just bringing one ama, no sail.

Whoa what a coincidence.  I will also be camping at RG this weekend and I am also bringing my dune AI!  The forecast for this Saturday is very similar to my last trip to RG, and I was only able to stay in the cove and pick up small rockfish for campsite tacos.  The tacos were still delicious.  Im hoping to get out of the cove Sunday morning and send my friends home with some nice jumbo sized rf.
See you at the launch on Saturday.  i'll be on 69
