I'm wondering if anybody knows if there is an online location where I could view the salmon counts for the Sacramento river so far this year. I can find numbers for past years, but I'm interested in seeing how the count is going so far this year with the fishing closure. Any ideas?  :smt017

The chart below is from the Red Bluff Unified School District. Apparently they keep track of the numbers as part of a school project.

This might need to be searched for each day to have it updated but this should do it!

Good find, thanks! Looks like we're just a bit ahead of last year, but that's not saying much...  :smt011

Man, other than the outlier of 2001, that is one depressing graph that I don't need help comprehending. :smt009

well, 26% is actually a pretty big increase?

If I understand it correctly, the reason salmon fishing was banned was because of the very low levels of "early" returning 2 year old fish last year. Most fish return at three years but some return early at 2 years old and those 2 year olds are used to estimate the returns for the following year. So we should expect a very low return this year.

Er, right?

I was referring to the graph that FJ posted.  I didn't look at the link that Bigfoot provided.  Maybe I should.

Sorry, to clarify I was responding to Jay. The counts this year are up 26% on last year (according to the Red Bluff newspaper).

Sorry, to clarify I was responding to Jay. The counts this year are up 26% on last year (according to the Red Bluff newspaper).

I'm hopeful about that increase too, but 26% above last year still isn't saying much for salmon recovery. Even if the 26% increase holds true through the end of the run, it would still be the second lowest return since 1999 according to the chart, even lower than 2006 which was another crap year for salmon fishing. I LOVE catching salmon, but although it pains me to say it, I think my days of catching Salmon in Benicia are over.  :smt010
