For Sale / Handheld VHF Radios with chargers
« on: October 11, 2022, 12:55:35 PM »
I have two extra handheld VHF submersible radios, both working well and batteries which have not been charged in 2 years still at full charge.
Both are Uniden, but one is branded WestMarine.
$50 each,$90 for the pair. I am in Novato.

Name that predator.
Was at Nick's cove a couple of weeks ago and saw the most amazing pelican attack.  It went on for at least 45 minutes, moving up against the shore and then out a bit. there were scores of birds. The water is pretty shallow thru here.
I assume there was a large number of anchovies being herded, but I don't know what was chasing them.  I didn't see any seals in the water so I assume it was halibut or salmon but there are probably a lot more halibut around.  I used to fish a good sized run of coho in the bay years back.
Sorry for the fuzzy pictures. I only had my iPhone.
I was out having an anniversary dinner and fishing was out of the question.
Any one ever fish conditions like this or know what was happening?

No longer using this https://www.amazon.com/Sevylor-Tahiti-Classic-Inflatable-Kayak/dp/B003652EY6, many years old, but no leaks or obvious wear.  It was stored in a duffel in my garage. Complete, but no paddle.  Great for beach, lake and slow stream play with kids.
I'm in Novato. PM me if you want to pick it up.

General Talk / Dungeness Crab Testing
« on: October 03, 2016, 10:41:49 PM »
With all this talk about new crab regs, I looked at the dfg website and found these test results.  I never looked at them before last seasons problems with domoic acid, so I don't know if they are typically high in summer and then calm down in fall/winter, but they are showing some crabs over the limit at this time.

General Fishing Tips / Crab outlook may be better this year
« on: September 04, 2016, 05:25:02 PM »
Hi,
I saw this article in the Chronicle today.  The recent warning about red crabs in Half Moon Bay may not mean a bad outlook for dungeness.
Let's hope.

General Fishing Tips / 40% Loss of Downscan on Lawrence Elite 4 HDI
« on: July 21, 2016, 10:48:53 AM »
I am installing an Elite 4 HDI unit on my Trident 13. I called Lowrance Tech Support about a transducer issue.  He said that going "Thru Hull" would degrade the downscan performance by 40%.  Has anyone noticed this on theirs, and how bad is it? I don't see how I could put the transducer under the kayak and land on a beach.

Just bought an Elite-4 HDI unit on sale with Nautic Pro V-15 charts.  Was told by WestMarine and Lawrence that the maps showed the MPA's and MLPA's.  Were not on V-15 SD, so they replaced it with V-16.  All I can see is a very faint blue dashed line with no label.  Very hard to use for reference.  Is this the only depiction on the charts, or should they be brighter, and have a contrasting color with some cross hatching showing their area?  It is pretty useless the way it is.

General Fishing Tips / Where to go for Sand Dabs
« on: January 10, 2016, 06:53:44 PM »
I'm in Marin and want to fish the ocean some more.  I've never gone out looking for sand dabs, but with salmon, crabs, and rockfish closed, I am wondering if there are any reasonable places to target sand dabs in a kayak from Marin and Sonoma, which are not too far off shore, or deep.
Has anyone had much experience with this?

General Talk / Great Funny Salmon Video, in case you have not seen it yet

Just came across this one I had not seen for a few years.
If it has not been posted yet, enjoy.

What is the earliest time or day you can drop your crab pots before or on the opening day? I assume the earliest you can pull them is 1/2 hour before sunrise.  Is this true?  It looks like there will only be a week of crabbing before the commercial season this year. Notfair!  Why is this?  When can the commercials drop their pots?
