General Talk / Lost WAF points
« on: February 20, 2008, 06:57:39 PM »
Lost some major WAF points last night.  The family went out to dinner for the Boy’s 20th birthday.  I ordered the surf and turf at “market prices.”  Well, “market prices” turned out to be 95 freeking dollars!!!   :smt103  To top it off, it was a spiny lobster rather than a Maine lobster, and probably imported  frozen.  Also, they overcooked it and each bite had some shell in it.  Mz. Grizz won’t let me live it down.  I was just making the coffee for tomorrow morning (she usually does that) and she asked if I was making up for last night.

I’ll be fishing Del Valle on Thursday, 17 Jan.  I plan to be on the water by 10 to let the fog can burn off.  I’ll be on ch. 69

« on: December 30, 2007, 04:52:29 PM »
What are your kayak fishing goals for 2008?

Mine are:
1.  To learn to fish for bass and catch them consistently.
2.  Set new PB’s in LMB and Rainbows.
3.  Win one of the NCKA 2008 AOTY top individual species awards.
4.  To meet more NCKA brothers and sisters.

General Talk / What did Santa bring you?
« on: December 26, 2007, 09:43:19 AM »
So what Kayak or fishing related things did Santa bring you?  I got an Olympus Stylus 770 SW waterproof camera to replace my Pentax Optio that I drowned at the 2007 New Melones Trout Derby.

AM air temp 57, water temp 60, PM air temp 57, water temp 58.  Wind 5-10 from the west.  Clear but brisk at times, a beautiful fall day.  Trolled from 9:30 AM to 12:30 PM from the buoys off the ramp to Vanados Campground and back, several times.  Had three hits, one just a bump and two hooked.  Fought a Rainbow, about 24”, up to the side of the kayak and it spit the lure.  He made five or six good runs.  I have to tire out the bigger ones more, but I get anxious.  Don’t have my rubber net yet, its been on order since the 9th.  Landed and released a 16” Rainbow, 1 lb, 11 oz.  All the hits were opposite the Hetch Hetchy campground on a Rapala J7 in Firetiger with red EWG hooks, 90 feet back at 1.85 ground speed.  I was the only kayaker out, but there were several canoes and about 8 PBs.  Lures that didn’t work were a SR in Shad and an F7 in Rainbow.  Ya’ll have a great Thanksgiving!

Hookups and Fishing Reports (Viewable by Public) / Del Valle Nov 7
« on: November 07, 2007, 07:29:44 PM »
I’ve got the hooking part down (7) but the landing part sucks (0).  Put the kayak in about 8:30 am, No fog, just a few clouds in the sky.  Morning air temp 65, water temp 62, very slight breeze from the west, water level down about 15 feet.  I trolled from the ramp to Heron Bay and back trying to maintain about 1.8 mph.  I started off with a Rapala Countdown 7 in Firetiger at about 10-15 ‘ on one side and a Rapala Jointed Shad Rap 7 in Firetiger on the other  This is only my second time out trolling for trout with lures, and the first time in six months and I have all new gear, so my method for putting the lures out back was to cast to the side and clear all of the backlash, so the lures were way back there.  About 10 minutes out, about even with the drain pipes, the pole with the countdown doubled over and line started stripping out.  I tightened the drag a bit and kept the tip high.  It ran up in front of the kayak, I turned it and it took off to the back.  I turned sideways to the fish and brought him in close.  I was going to grip him with the Boga, but as I brought his head up, he straightened the snap swivel and took off with my lure.  This beautiful trout was at least 25” which would have beat my PB by 10” (yeah, I know, no pictures, didn’t happen).  The other six all hit the JSR7, two, about 15 to 20” got loose about 10 feet from the boat, as did two less then 15”, then there were two little ones that I only new they were on because the tip of the rod lost its rhythm.  Got off the water at about 2:30 pm.  Air temp was 74, water temp was 64, breeze probably about 5 mph from the west.

I learned a few things:  Have your landing tools ready, ie Boga and/or net.  On the big one, the Boga wasn’t immediately handy, and my collapsible net was just that, collapsed.   Also my JSR7 got logged into a braided rope and I had to push it through and smash the barbs to get it out.  I can land trout if barbless flys, but I don’t have the experience with barbless lures.  Gonna get rid of the roap.

I have a few questions, when trying to land a big fish with a net, should you scoop from the nose or the tail?  Not that the other six were close enough to net.  Second, what brand hook and size do you recommend to replace the JRS 7 hooks?

All in all, a beautiful day and great fun!

Introductions / First Post
« on: November 04, 2007, 02:52:48 PM »
I guess this is as a good time and place for my first post on this forum.  A few years ago, I was fly fishing on a Sierra lake.  I started off with a sinking line, stripping a Woolly Bugger.  After several hours, the bite was off so I changed line to a floating line and started drifting an Adams Parachute.  I peddled my Hobie to the windward side of the lake for a slow drift to the other end.  There was a very slight breeze, with an air temp of about 80º.  I settled back in my seat and watched the tops of the pines and fir slowly drift bye.  Next thing I know, I rolled out of the kayak to the right and face planted in the lake.  A very rude awakening!  I had drifted off to sleep.  Several tube floaters floated over to me, suppressing their laughter, and helped me right my kayak and get back aboard.  They helped me retrieve my gear, most of which was leashed to the kayak.  That is when I realized by $500 Orvis T3 rod and reel that was setting in my lap was at the bottom of the lake.  About ten yards off, I spotted a three foot length of fluorescent green line lying on the surface.  I peddled over to it, and started pulling on the line.  After stripping off all the line and backing, up came my rod and reel.  The only thing that I lost was my hat with fishing license attached, but, by then, it was time to get off the water.  Now, EVERYTHING is leashed down.  As a side note, I always wear my PFD ‘cause you never know.  Now I know!
