General Talk / SFFD boat rescues paddle boaters outside Golden Gate
« on: May 11, 2012, 06:19:53 PM »
Watched the video on this and I have to agree with the SFFD, the poodle was the smartest one on the boat.

"Gurman said he's gone under the bridge before and come back, but the current is always different and people have to be aware."

Safety First / Re: Missing Kayaker...
« on: May 11, 2012, 06:03:02 PM »
Wow,....just saw the story on KTVU news showing the search and rescue teams on the lake.  The story did not offer up any new news, much less good news I'm afraid.

I just spent a good amount of time filing my paddle plan with friends and family as well as double and triple checking my safety items before my trip this weekend.  Unfortunately goes to show you, bad things can happen to anyone at anytime.

He is in my thoughts and prayers.  Please be safe out there people.

I had a giant beaver torpedo out of a river at me one time when I was bank fishing in Minnesota. It was huge and pissed off.

I saw it earlier gliding down the other side of the  river. The one thing I noticed was it was eyeing me big time. He went down river and I went back to fishing without a thought. 5 or 10 minutes later that beaver swam upstream underwater (I didn't see him at all) and blasted out of the water at me with full speed. He had me lined up perfectly too. Lost a bucket of minnows as I fell back trying to get away from the giant beaver. I couldn't collect my gear until I was sure he left the area. Didn't return to fish there again.

I would NOT want to meet that guy in a yak.  Watch out when fishing near beaver dams/dens etc. I didn't realize that beavers could be so aggressive.

I KNEW IT!!!  Awhile back I was at a buddy's bachelor party up near Clearlake, on a ranch.  Hadn't gotten any sleep that night and did this and drank that and did this and that......ahem.  Walked down to the creek that had an awesome smallmouth pool and started fishing,...awesome, crazy morning,...smoke on the water,...not *quite* sober yet.  Started seeing crazy wake in the creek,...and it was flat flat end of summer, hardly any current.  A beaver was coming right for me, or at least I thought it was one, never saw it.  Splashed around at the far end, swam towards me, kept in the area, kept vibing me.  I got freaked out, and in my hallucinogenic state, tripped out, pretty bad.  Ran back to the ranch house with my rod and my lures and dam near sh*t myself thinking there were monsters in there or gators or some other crazy junk.  Beavers.  I'm not calling em pussy no more.

Any details on the bass bite?  I'll be going tomorrow afternoon, mostly trolling for trouts but will more than likely be throwing a swimbait or two as well as senkos up scow and perhaps down in the paddle only zone.  Any advice/details would be loverly!

Hobie Kayaks / Re: NEW HOBIE PRO ANGLER 12!!!
« on: May 06, 2012, 09:01:03 AM »
Yup, to each their own.  That's a LOTTA money for a plastic tub with a lawn chair as CrawFish pointed out.  For the money, the fact you pretty much gotta trailer those beasts and the weight, I'd just buy a little skiff and slap a motor on it (that could go in reverse too!).  You love what you love though,...I'd rather have a Jackson Cuda or Coosa, and those come with lawn chairs too.

With the near weightless rigs I generally go with a lighter weight spinning setup.  I save my baitcast rigs for swimbaits, lures, heavier plastics, so on and so forth.

Nice fish!!!  I love that lake.  But the fees are a bit much for me and the launch setup is somewhat of a hassle - duck shit all over the place.

When I was a youngster, my dad made me a P51 model with a motor in it, hung it, slapped a counterbalance on a stick so that it would fly around in a circle under my room light.  Had that thing for years before it busted and became a simple gathering dust on my shelf.  Have loved WWII planes ever since,...had no idea about dream machine thing in HMB or I prolly woulda gone and dragged my boy along and slap him silly until he gets it.  :smt044

General Talk / Re: High Low Seats, Whats your thoughts?
« on: April 27, 2012, 09:24:25 AM »
Met Dan and VWool down at the Paddlefest gathering in Fremont the other day and had a chance to take out the Coosa, with the high low seat.  Unfortunately I was too stupid to realize THAT was the feature I should've been checking out.  The seat is super comfy and seems to already sit higher than where I am in my T-13.  The stability of the Coosa is pretty impressive.  I'm a big guy and was able to stand up in the thing.  That combined with the elevated seat will make the Coosa #2 in my fleet.  The layout of the boat is dam near perfect and well suited to bass fishing, which is how I came to yak fishing (of course now I feel the big water calling).  I'd head over to Headwater today and pick one up, but my wife thinks I've gone mad,...oh,...and my kids both want their own SUPs AND kayaks (thanks paddlefest).

In general I'm in favor of the high low seat for flatwater.  For larger water and angry waters I'd stick with my T-13.  Now, will someone please explain to my wife why I need 2 boats?

Incidental or not, they should be heavily fined for killing a protected species...not glorified on all the news websites.

I 100% agree with you.  Unfortunately what passes for news these days is not news at all.

I still want fish tacos and a corona though.

Needed a bigger boat.

Good that it looks like the shark was bycatch and not intentionally killed.

Really want a fish taco and a corona right now for some reason.
