Kayaks / Rockfish Setup?
« on: June 20, 2005, 08:48:15 AM »
Sounds like I'll have to spool up one of my reels with some spectra to try it out. I've always used mono & have no real stretch problems with it since most of my yak fishing is done in less than 80 ft, but I can see benefits to the spectra too.
I totally agree with the 20 pound test breakoff thing (although I sometimes use 25 on a heavier rod). 20lb seems to be the best compromise. I used to use soft 17lb and lings would constantly wrap me & snap it. This hasn't happened with the 20lb (I still get wrapped but now the line can take it). I use a 7' Ugly stik tiger or an old custom rod I scored in an antique shop, both with the 20lb on either daiwa or penn reels. Nothing fancy but they work well.
I like to use big scampis & 8' fishtraps for tossing near kelp, and 4-6oz bar jigs with single hooks for deeper jigging. Pretty standard stuff.

Well, I was gonna say I'm sorry I missed the derby on July 12th...but I'm not really. J/K! I always seem to be out of town for the June Derby when all the heavy hitters attend. I was down in SoCal fishing the islands for WSB & halibut, and I guess the vibe sort of trickled down there too. My first drop got me a legal 28" ling so I thought the day was off to a good start but it slowed from there for only a tough scratch on the rockfish. No halibut or WSB anywhere to be seen. Largest fish to come aboard was an 11 pound whitefish (never seen one that size before). While I'm bummed that ya'll traveled to SC from the far reaches to fish hard por nada I'm totally stoked that I'll get to fish in the "derby redux" in July. Please confirm the date here so the word gets out. I'm in for next month & amped to go out.

Hookups and Fishing Reports (Viewable by Public) / Vacation anyone?
« on: June 08, 2005, 08:25:33 AM »
I've always wanted to travel the inside passage with just my kayak too. What an adventure. I used to guide kayak tours on Prince William Sound in the 90's and have never forgotten the summers I spent there. My largest salmon from my kayak was probably 18 pounds on 10lb test and a trout rod, a late run silver in September. I recall several blistering runs and tailwalking (for a sec thought maybe it was a tarpon that had taken a wrong turn at Albuquerque). Lots of rain, but some days that would challenge baja too. Huge reds & lings & my buddy Scott caught his first halibut, estimated at 126 pounds (these were off a small powerboat). Prince William Sound Kayak Center has a nice website & the best local knowledge in Whittier AK. Ask for Perry or Lois, they'll help ya.  One of these days I'll get back...

General Talk / SC Tourny, should sharks be allowed?
« on: June 02, 2005, 03:52:34 PM »
Don't we go through this argument every year in Santa Cruz? The rules were created back when there were, what, 3 people in each event? It was set up as a fun, relaxed thing that was supposed to bring folks together with a common interest, as well as gathering revenue for a good cause. With the rules as they are, sharks should be allowed, end of argument. If a ray wins this thing next week, I think that there might need to be a species specific amendment for September though. Otherwise we'll all be out there with big dead baits & mr whitey will think he hit the shrink wrapped dude-snack jackpot.
