My son was inspired by the report and wants to go this Saturday for squid. We have never been on Monterey Bay water, if anyone plan to go we will love to join. Otherwise can someone give a quick tip of which direction to try and how far we should go? Thanks. Chris

I was out today and did well for squid. I launched at 715 and had 60 squid by 8. All squid were caught in front of cannery row in 90-100 ft of water. Sorry I can’t tell you something to line up with on shore it was fogged in this morning but I think it was just before the aquarium. It moves around anyway but that general area is a great place to start. If you have a fish finder you should be able to paddle around and mark them. Also if you have never done it before I HIGHLY suggest picking up a squid jig with white glow beads. P-line finesse squid jigs are the ones I have found work the best. Below is a picture of the squid jig and what they can look like on the fish finder.

Thank you Todd, that one cool image alone gave a lot of information (and Hope!) for us to go out and try. Really appreciate your sharing. Can’t wait for Saturday to come.

We made the trip on Sunday morning, on water pasted 9AM. My son caught a few squids right away at about 50' in 80' of depth but it's hard to get continuous action, Squids were either not biting or not swimming in dense group. I had a hard time to tell if squid is on or not with a medium rod, I got surprised catches and maybe some misses due to inexperience. After wind and current picked up, the jigging was harder with heavier weight.  Ended up with only a dozen between two of us in 2 hours' try. we debated whether to eat them while fresh or use squids for rock fish bait. We took a easier route - get back to car sashimi them with wasabi and soy sauce- it is actually very good specially the aftertaste!

A wonderful day in Monterey, thanks for the tips for us newbies.. Hope to come back soon for more squid or rock fish action.
Chris
