Mooch, thanks for the link to the Chef thread. What a great tribute to an incredible fisherman and friend as evidenced by all of the contributors. Thanks for sharing his recipe and the memories.

Man, Chef's recipe sounds great - I am going to grill some Gopher RF and try it. BTW who is the Chef to whom you refer?

Ocean Kayaks / Re: painting ocean kayaks w/ krylon fusion for plastic

According to tests the mythbusters did: http://mythbustersresults.com/mini-myths

"Sharks tend to be attracted to brighter colors like yellow.

plausible

When all the results were calculated, the sharks tested preferred to go for the "yum-yum yellow" seal dummy before the other ones (red, blue, black, white, silver)."

I've been thinking about decorating the 'yak, too. Following the report of Dan's encounter, I thought about painting the bottom of the boat to look like an Orca. I will let you know how that goes . . .

I have been a volunteer pouring wine at benefit events with Dan (Van as he is sometimes called at these events) and he is very funny, besides knowing good wine!

General Fishing Tips / Re: does using scent make a differance?
« on: October 17, 2007, 08:00:04 AM »
Were you all three fishing in the same manner, same depth, same weight, same test line, etc?

I would believe scent comes into the equation, but I don't think it makes nearly as much difference as presentation.  I feel the same way about color.

Fish will eat a bare hook or unpainted plug if it's presented right.

Eric, we were fishing withing about 20 feet of each other, none of us had a FF so we could not say what the terrain was or if depth was identical. We were all using hex bars to begin with. One guy snagged up and lost it and went to a lead head with a CTG. We all were using 15 lb. test. All of it is anecdotal, not scientific by any means - just an observation of that particular time.

Or maybe you were just a better or Luckier Fisherman that Day. You should have shared and then checked out the result.

Mickfish, you know I got some grief for not sharing.  :smt010
But I had some lures (lead head grub and hex bars) that had been treated with scent days before in one of my Tupperware type containers in my gear bag. I did not have any scent with me to share.

I was offshore in about 45 feet of water in my yak with two others along. I dropped in a hex bar with scent and caught a Blue on my first, second and fourth jig drops. On my third drop I got a greenling. This continued on to the point of inside of two hours I caught 11 fish. Blues, Greenling, Vermilion, Ling Cod, Kelp Bass and assorted Gopher RF. The other two guys - guy 1: 1 blue. Guy 2: 1 underling. They were not using scent.

Yes, scent matters. At least that day, that locale.

Here is a photo from the biological diversity website -

It is said that the Delta Smelt has a distinct odor of fresh cucumbers . . .

Also here is a link for identifying: http://www.delta.dfg.ca.gov/smelt/dsid.html

Asa, I envy you. If you need volunteers next time - send me a PM.  I'm very interested in what you guys are doing.

Me too! A good friend of mine is a Director at E Center in the fisheries program and would also be up to volunteer.

General Fishing Tips / Re: Handling Fish
« on: October 15, 2007, 12:01:19 PM »
I use the stringer method while floating and canvas bag them in transit to shore. Then they go on ice for the drive home.

Thanks for the idea of the burlap sack - I forgot all about that one, my Grandfather always used one, I thought it was because he could get them for free. I am gonna check in at our local coffee roaster and try to pick some up.

Right after Thanksgiving sounds great - I could definitely use some instruction on reading water and landing metalheads.
