Ocean conditions for Fort Bragg are not favorable for the weekend, wind 20+kn gusting to 30+.
There are 3 breweries in town that could ease the pain  :smt002

Well that sucks, hopefully it will calm down. If not, I will not take the risk, especially not knowing the local area. Luckily, I have a bag of Halibut steaks from ARW! I was hoping to catch some more crab and fresh fish tacos!

No fishing update today or tomorrow, we are in the redwoods. Saturday we head to Fort Bragg, but I did make some awesome Blackened Halibut and rice for dinner.

I only went crabbing for a couple hours today after the fog lifted. There was a lot of female and undersized crab off the day use area. I ended up with 3 crabs for lunch, for my wife and I. I made a how to clean and cook crab video while I was at it. Let me know what you think? I was also thinking of heading a little further away from the day use beach to try and find a little better crab selection. Any suggestions?

Awesome and thanks, my wife and I made it to our first stop. We will be here till Thursday at Doran. The wind is blowing today, however, tomorrow looks nice. Hopefully there’s some crab left out there, I’ll try tomorrow.

As Chopper stated, my wife and I always enjoy camping and fishing at Russian Gulch.  It is a very protected cove, and if the ocean is too rough, you can just stay in the cove.  However, fishing is very slow in the cove.  We try to visit every two weeks during the summer.

Paul

I’ll be in the area the 16-22 this month if your up that way.

If you're new to kayaking and solo I wouldn't plan on a beach launch/landing at Westport except on the calmest of days. You should be able to get out safely at Noyo in Fort Bragg and Russian Gulch just south of there but even those are condition dependent - especially for a new kayaker. The cove at Russion Gulch gives some decent protection from the NW winds and swell - the same for the northern side of the cove at Noyo.

Cheers,
Brad

Thank you

While we are at Bodega/Doran camping, I will crab and fish bodega and try out at least one trip to Tomales Bay Miller Park. Hopefully I can get some advice on the Fort Bragg area. We will be staying at Pomo RV park and then going a north to Westport RV. I believe at Westport RV I can beach launch from the campground and hopefully get some fish and crab.

Ocean Cove Campground
The launch separates the men from the meek...
Can't get a link to work...brb

I’ll check it out, however, I am pretty new to kayaking and will be going at this alone, unless I meet someone at the launch.

I’m taking a 2 week trip from Bodega to Fort Bragg and then Westport. I've been going to Bodega my whole life, however, Fort Bragg and Westport is all new to me. I’ll be taking my Radar 135. I’m looking for any advice on launching, fishing and crabbing the area from my Kayak. Let me know!

Had a great time today out in the sporty water! I was able to get 3 shakers and 1 legal fish before they called an early end to the tournament. It was great to meet some new people that I hopefully get to fish with in the future. My legal fish wasn’t that big so I didn’t enter it, but here’s a photo proof!

Fished 7-12 today for a 25,29 and 2 shorts. The tide was ripping! Look forward to meeting you guys tomorrow!

I booked a room in Walnut Creek at the Diablo Mountain Inn. They stated that they have had 1 theft in the last 10-15 years and I can take my kayak in the ground floor room, facing the parking lot.

I plan to fish Friday morning prior to the tournament. Let me know if anyone else will be fishing the day before?

Is there a decent/reasonable hotel near the ARW that my gear and kayak would survive the night? The kayak would be in the back of my truck, I could put a lock cable on it for the honest people. Should I look for a ground floor room and just unload everything?

I don't know if sleeping in your truck is an option for your but that's what I do sometimes.

I have no issues sleeping in my truck, to be there early on Saturday. I was hoping to head over Friday morning and fish til the wind picks up, then get a hotel Friday night. I may have to look a little further out, for a hotel or campsite.
