With big baits, i try to slowly come tight on the fish rather than doing a big giant hook set. That way I’m not scaring off hitchhiking lings. But I’ve lost fish this way as well when they weren’t hooked and I did a bad job with the netting. Saw videos of a guy who put the treble hook in the mouth of the fish and the single hook farther back with kingfish baits. Might try that.

Craftsmen's Corner / Re: How to remove bolt stuck in Hobie threaded insert?

They make left handed drill bits for reverse drilling a broken bolt, which should also reverse it out.  Have to be pretty small, but seems like it would work.

Did you guys pay for the leak/repair test first when sending it in or did you pay for the stuff you know what's wrong with it like the wrist gaskets and hydro socks?
I believe you pay for the test/repair and then add details and they will evaluate when it arrives.

Gearing Up and Rigging Up / Re: Waterproof phone cases
« on: September 06, 2024, 10:37:55 AM »
What worked for me was switching to a higher quality waterproof case that doesn’t compromise the camera’s capabilities.
This absolutely was the right choice to get better quality pictures for me as well.  No bag will ever be good for the pictures, but the cases are a good option.

Most phones these days are pretty waterproof. Not 100%, you will probably need to let it dry out before charging with a cord, but waterproof enough to survive a splash or a dunk.

I just have a simple rubber case, no water protection at all. I also lanyard the phone around my neck or to my PFD. These little lanyard anchors work great, slip between the phone and case, and are very secure.

My PFD also has a very convenient and secure pocket for my phone too, which is pretty nice. Very easy to pop it out, get a picture, and put it back.

I'm still not willing to trust that my phones charger, mic and speakers can stand up to saltwater abuse.  But I did get a case that is as you describe, and is like just and outside case that covers up the ports.  The camera takes way nice pictures this way, and fits in my PFD pocket.  I still feel like keeping it in my drybag most of the time though  :smt044

The ones I wear do fill up with water when you are standing in it, but they empty as soon as i'm peddling. They aren't filled up all day or anything, I don't even notice it really.

For me, on the LARGE baits, it's a 3/0 Treble and 2/0 Octopus hook.  For smaller live baits, I go with a #1 Treble and a 1/0 Octopus.  And for squid I go cheaper with these #1 Trebles and 4/0 live bait Mustad hooks (smaller than they sound).  I always tie a perfection loop for the treble, and then sliding snell for the octopus hook, and try to guess the starting distance between the hooks when tying.  They dont' hold up very long the way I tie them.  For an anchovie, I use the small owner live bait hooks.  I normally use 30 or 40lb mono, but went with 40lb fluorocarbon this time for fun. To rig I just use a sliding sinker with 4-10oz weight and a swivel.  To connect I use a double surgeons loop, so the only hardware is the hooks and the swivel.

I wear these exact booties now, with my wetsuit. 7mil. No cold feet, ever!  If it is warm, but not too warm, I wear a 3 mil sock and Crocs.

Could just wear Crocs over the dry suit socks...
I should get a pair of Crocs to try, that would be dual purpose  :smt003. I also wear wool socks in the drysuit, my feet have never been cold.

I use these, but they used to be only 35$: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000V9P73U/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&th=1&psc=1

The drysuit bottoms are so thin, easy to wear them through.  These I got one size larger, they go on easy, and work well for me with my drysuit.

Cringing moments in that video for actual AI owners  :smt005 But doesn't look like any changes.  Wouldn't it be sweet if the front hatch was somehow updated to be waterproof?  :smt003

Not seeing any changes from their diagram, except an extra un-used bungee on the ama's?

Question - Is a map of the 20 fathom line far preferable to just looking at the bathy contour lines and the depth reading?
I also have a contour line of the California cost, for use with units that can take input (sdcard) but do not have maps.  With the cost, the 20ma, and 50ma lines you have what you need to know where to fish.
