General Fishing Tips / Winter project / 3d print trout lures
« on: December 12, 2024, 08:44:31 AM »
Bottom line up front - what color should I paint 3d printed trout lures? What other lures should I be printing?

So, I was gifted a 3d printer a few months ago, and have been learning the ins and outs of printing various shapes with the basic PLA plastic filament. I am at a point where the kids have printed the fun bendy toys and whatnot, and finally have some time to print stuff for myself. So, of course, first thought went to finding some lure designs online to print.

I've found a few lures that look "trout-y" enough, even though they are mostly scaled down salmon lures.

I started with two Tomic style plugs, and one flatfish type that seems similar to a Brads Cut Plug - mostly because I was looking for somewhat popular designs that I could run the line through without needing to epoxy loops or wire into the body.

I can scale these up or down, but I think 2-3" is a good starting size for these type lures. The flatfish one is a out 2.5" and the plugs are about 3". One plug is set for a 45 degree line lay, and the other for 30 degrees.

What colors should I paint them first?  They are two colors now because my kids wanted to use yellow for a different project, and I was too lazy to switch back to grey or black, haha.

I'm kinda thinking one black and silver, one white and chartreuse, and maybe one fire tiger?

There are a ton of crank bait models available out there, and a handful of other trolling types lures too - anyone else 3d print lures for trout, or other species? Seems like this could be either really cool, or a giant waste of my time....

General Fishing Tips / Slow Death Hooks
« on: October 09, 2024, 11:35:56 AM »
I ordered some slow death hooks, size 4, for trout trolling this winter.  After seeing Cal Kellogg's videos, and a few threads here, I figured lets give it a go.  Size 4 seemed to be about the right size for about 3" or so grubs, worms, etc.  I think I have some 3" pearl grubs, those might be the first try.

Seems like standard rigging is either behind some beads/spinners like a wedding ring setup, just a grub or worm behind a flasher, or just a grub or worm without any attractors.

I tried a wedding ring a little bit last year in the east bay reservoirs, but didn't have any luck with them.  Might have been the color choices though - I did catch quite a few fish on Rooster tails in different colors.  Could also be a timing thing; maybe I was trying bait imitators too early in the season.

Also thinking about scent.  Pro-cure something would probably easiest, but I might do some tuna soaked corn too.  Maybe soak the grubs in the tuna corn?

General Fishing Tips / Large Live Bait Setup
« on: September 06, 2024, 08:26:11 AM »
How are y'all rigging up large live baits? Thinking 12" size smelt, croakers, or macks.

Been talked about a lot - plenty of options out there for live bait setups. I usually use a three way with a spreader, about 12-15" dropper for the weight, and about a 3' leader to the nose of the bait.

Yesterday I used a some croakers, about 12" long, rigged on trap setups. 1/0 or so octopus hook for the nose, hard tied, about 10" or so from a #2 short shank treble.

One of the baits got absolutely shredded, in between the hooks. Had to be a ling - it gave that dead weight, then a dive or two to the bottom again, and then came off. I pulled the bait up and it had teeth marks 1/4" deep down both sides, right in the middle.

Not gonna guess as to how big it was - I never saw it - but it wasn't small. It left a rather large bite mark in a bait that was about 12 inches long.

How do you guys rig up to ensure that is a fish landed vs just a torn up bait? Should I just run bigger hooks?

General Fishing Tips / Squid Brine?
« on: July 04, 2024, 03:28:39 PM »
Anyone brine frozen squid for bait? Was gonna brine some herring for tomorrow, thinking I might toss a couple squid in too.  I usually dye with liquid bluing. Feeling like it might be crazy or might be genius. Dunno, haha.    :dontknow:

General Fishing Tips / Trolling Rudder?
« on: June 24, 2024, 07:56:27 PM »
Anyone use a trolling rudder? I assume this goes in front of a dodger? Looks handy to keep spinning bait/lure from twisting your line by forcing the swivel to spin.

General Fishing Tips / Vintage Penn 209 for rockfish?
« on: June 09, 2024, 02:45:28 PM »
Bottom line up front: should I buy a left handed vintage Penn 209 for inshore use?

The long version:
I've been on a bit of a retro kick lately, and acquired some vintage Penn backwards (right handed) reels. I've cleaned them up, and a couple a pretty nice. I really dig the old school aesthetic, and I like the durable feeling and seemingly infinite serviceability. A huge capacity makes it even more appealing for me.

Only problem is that all the reels I have are right handed, and I fish left handed. I know, I know, I need to grow up and learn the other way. It would really open up a lot more reel options. Like, all of the reel options, haha.

Old Penns are really hard to find in left hand models. And if looking for a specific model, I guess set the eBay alert and prepare to wait.

I really want to find a Jigmaster. Don't really care about the age, color, etc. Just want the larger drag washers and higher gear ratio, but seems like all the other left handers out there are onto the same thing, haha. I actually also like that it is open face, keeps things simpler.

All that said, I found a relatively clean Penn 209 left hand level wind for an acceptable price on eBay. Should I grab that one, or hold out for a Jigmaster? Or, if anyone has any old left handed Penn reels, and they wish it was a right handed model, I would happily trade.

General Fishing Tips / AI Weather Forecasts/Evaluation
« on: May 30, 2024, 04:43:16 PM »
I played around with Google Gemini today, and it seems pretty capable of pulling weather forecasts from various places at once, and then evaluating based on criteria I provide.  Could be helpful tool to help figure out where weather is best for fishing on any given day.  Took a little back and forth to refine my ask and the results I wanted.  Biggest concern I found was that it consistently got the date wrong - it tried telling me multiple times that today was the 31st of May, and that tomorrow is Friday June 01.  I corrected it, and still it persisted, haha.  Results were drawn from NWS, and seemed to align with information in the forecast on NWS site, no issues there.

Anyone else using AI for this yet?

General Fishing Tips / Benicia Stripers in Spring?
« on: May 05, 2024, 10:01:31 AM »
Anyone fish for stripers in Benicia in the spring?  Like, now through the end of the month?  I know people are catching in both the Bay and in the Delta, so I figure why not try to catch them in between?

General Fishing Tips / Descender Weight
« on: April 30, 2024, 04:40:07 PM »
Considering what to use for a descender weight.

I do have a 4lb downrigger ball, but it is fin shaped, not round.

I also have several 1lb cannonball weights. Was considering melting a few of those together. Not sure the best way to go about that though. I think 3lbs would be plenty, but could do a 4 or 5 lb.

Or, I could just string them together, and not bother melting anything.

What is everyone else doing for this?

General Fishing Tips / Freshwater Line Choice
« on: March 21, 2024, 08:07:31 PM »
Time to re-spool two of my freshwater spinning reels - both see duty as 90% trout and 10% bass in local reservoirs.

Was thinking of going 8lb braid to about 10 ft of 6lb flouro leader.  Anyone else running similar?  Other suggestions?

Both currently have 6lb mono, which is working well enough, but I feel could be better.  The rods are bendy enough that I feel I want a little more responsiveness, and I am certainly accustomed to the strength and durability of braid.

I am not trolling with a downrigger, mostly trolling and casting smaller crankbaits, spinners, spoons, etc.  I don't really use large/heavy bass lures - I have a handful of dedicated bass rods for bigger baits if the situation calls for it.

General Fishing Tips / Preserved baits?
« on: January 31, 2024, 12:12:26 PM »
Anyone ever use any of the commercially available preserved baits?

https://www.basspro.com/shop/en/magic-preserved-baby-shad-baits

I see stuff like this all over the place, but never see anyone using them or talking about them.  Curious if something like that can take place of frozen baits - would be nice to not need to keep it frozen.  Can they be kept after the bag is open?  Can I make something like this at home using herring?

General Talk / EBRPD or EBMUD Annual Pass?
« on: January 18, 2024, 12:49:46 PM »
Hey all, thought I would ask here.  Am considering an annual pass for either EBRPD or EBMUD.  Can't do both, looking for folks who've had either of these in the past for insights.  Going to up my freshwater game this year!

Thanks!

General Fishing Tips / Chum box for sabiki
« on: August 12, 2023, 04:21:40 PM »
Anyone use a chum box/tube/etc when using a sabiki?  Thinking about rockfish regs, and increasing efficiency while getting/restocking bait.  One line with only 2 hooks can make that prospect time consuming, especially when wanting to get a working line back in the water.

Was thinking about drillng holes into a short length of pvc pipe, capping both ends, and rigging a swivel in one end to hook to the bottom of a sabiki.  Fill the pipe with cut fish or squid, in hopes of attracting more baitfish faster.

Anyone try this before?

General Fishing Tips / Keeping ice on the kayak
« on: August 05, 2023, 05:14:34 PM »
Thinking about making a more intentional effort to get fish on ice faster. From a boat, not a big deal, just bring reg cooler along. On kayak, kinda tricky because limited space, and saltwater fish add up to a large volume rather quickly. I'm thinking about DIYing some kind of bucket/cooler/bag solution. I'm not on a Hobie, otherwise I would probably go with their soft bag, but even still, those are pretty pricey.

I have a smaller soft cooler that fits in my tank well sorta-okayish but is kinda the wrong shape and not really big enough.

Maybe just a bigger cooler bag is my best/easiest/ cheapest option? Any suggestions?
