Jellyfish/invert ID?

I was out off the Mendo coast and saw a bunch of these guys sort of cruising near the surface. Around 4 inches long. I didn’t see any washed up on shore either.

What caught my eye was the crazy bioluminescent lights on it. They would light up from one end to the other with purples, yellows, oranges all very electric looking. I stopped fishing for a good amount of time to watch them.

I looked around the internet and maybe a comb jelly of some sort? Anyone else have an idea? And of course somebody is going to suggest ghost phallus so I’ll be the first to say that

Those are Ctenophores (aka comb jellies). Can't tell you which species. They don't have bioluminescence, those are actually lines of cilia they use to swim that reflect light and make the rainbow colors. Also even though they are also called comb jellies and look similar to jellyfish they actually aren't related to jellyfish at all.

That's about all I remember. I'm sure someone will respond with a lot more info. There was a ton of them on the Sonoma coast as well, cool to look at.

They're all over at Shelter Cove right now too.  Great colors!

I saw some of those, and lots of other bizarre invertebrates drifting around yesterday and Fort Ross, pretty cool.
