General Talk / Anyone need some temp work?
« on: June 30, 2015, 06:21:26 PM »
I have a job coming up in San Francisco that me and Fishadow could use some help with.  I'm an electrical contractor but work with a Cisco partner and so we end up doing a lot of data work.  We're getting ready to do a whole new cat6 and fiber optic infrastructure in a private school in San Francisco.  It's 4 floors, and we'll be running 2" conduit throughout and pulling tons of cable and terminating devices.  You don't need to be a licensed electrician and don't need experience.  We just need a pair of hands and a strong work ethic.  It should last at least a month and could turn into more work in the future if it works out.  PM me if you're interested.

For Sale / Free Coleman marine 15 canoe
« on: May 31, 2015, 03:52:11 PM »
I have an orange Coleman marine 15 canoe sitting in my yard taking up space.  It runs great, recently smogged, fresh tags.  I've got a couple of life vests and paddles to go with her.  A little bit dirty but otherwise fine, had many a fine day fishing trout with my wife.  Great to leave at your cabin for your kids, etc....you just have to pick it up in oakland.  Save me from taking the sawzall to her just to throw her out!

For Sale / WTB: Pop Up Camper
« on: April 14, 2014, 06:32:14 PM »
I never thought I'd be into the camper thing.  I always sleep in the truck and that's fine with me.  But my wife's been hinting at doing some longer trips AND bringing the dogs with, so I'm in the market for a little pop up camper.  I'm fairly handy, so if it needs some work, I can dig it.  If you or anyone you know is looking to upgrade or sell, keep an eye out for a brother,  thanks!  :smt006

For Sale / COLEMAN 15 Marine canoe
« on: February 01, 2014, 01:04:35 PM »
I have an old 15' orange plastic Coleman canoe sitting in my backyard.  I've used it 5-6 times and then stored it.  Its been outside under a tarp and out of the sun.  I have 2 paddles and a couple of cheesy life vests.  Its pretty cool for a canoe and works great.  I would like $100 for it, but really just want to get rid of it.  You gotta come pick it up in east oakland.  No pics, but Google the word "canoe" and you will get a sense for it  :smt005  :smt005 first pm wins  :smt002

General Talk / DSLR Photo NOOB
« on: January 06, 2014, 09:07:28 PM »
While I am a ManBearPig, Im certainly no Phot-HOG and I'm  getting interested in higher quality photography than my little waterproof point and shoots can provide.  The next step for some good outdoor pics seem to be a dslr camera, but where to start??  It seems like canon and Nikon are fairly reasonably priced and well respected but what say you, NCKA?  I'm interested in mostly outdoor and wildlife photos.   :smt006

Hobie Kayaks / Revolution Island??
« on: August 27, 2012, 04:58:40 PM »
Now that I've got a revo, :smt044  :smt044 I've been doing more research on hobies, and re-looking up Rudy halibu77's old videos of his revo.  I want to make a bootleg AI the way he did, build my own ama's and get some trampolines.  Has anyone tried this and what do you think is the best way to build an ama? Foam, plastic? Should I use pvc for the rigging to get some flexibility, or is it too flimsy?  I was thinking 1 1/4" schedule 80 for the framework to connect to the ama, but have no clue how to build the ama itself. I know someone on here has had to of thought about this before, I can't be the only one :smt003 I need to sail baby! :smt003

Fish Talk / worms in your fish....not so much?
« on: July 12, 2012, 10:39:02 PM »
Last year it seemed that every fish I kept had worms in it.  Didn't matter where I caught it from, SMC, fort ross, etc..or what species it was. This year I haven't seen any worms in any fish I've cut into.  What's the science behind the worms?  Do different conditions cause them to thrive? I eat the fish anyway, after a good freezing, so they don't really bother me, but it is curious.

General Fishing Tips / Fillet can you see?
« on: June 25, 2012, 09:26:50 PM »
Ive recently started keeping and eating more fish, as I want to live a healthier lifestyle, and my wife cant get enough....fish that is :smt005  Naturally Ive decided to step up my processing game, and recently bought a nice Dexter fillet knife, inspired by O2b and his taliban fillet sword.  What type of knives do you use, and what do you reccomend? :smt006

General Talk / Alone in the Wilderness
« on: June 24, 2012, 10:15:13 PM »
Every now and again I take a lazy sunday afternoon to just meat out on the couch.  Sometimes Im rewarded with this great documentary on PBS called Alone in the Wilderness. Ive seen bits and pieces of it for years, but today finally saw the whole thing, and I couldn't turn it off.  Its hypnotizing.  Its about a man who, in his 50's, took his small nest egg and retired to a remote part of Alaska.  He builds his own cabin, tools, etc.. He catches his own food and explores the bush for 30 years or so, by himself, winters and all.  It's truly inspiring, and I think it shows a lot of what a determined person can do.  He is a very deliberate, creative, and methodical man, and it really puts me in a zone to watch him explain, SLOWLY, what he's doing, and his philosophy behind doing it.  that is all.

General Talk / Stayin' Sharp
« on: May 15, 2012, 10:00:03 PM »
I have a k-bar marine knife, and for the life of me I cant get a good edge on it.  It isn't dull by any means, but I cant get that super fine edge on it.  The blade is so thick, I cant seem to figure out the degree of angle, everything I try either seems too steep of an angle, or too shallow.  How do you stay sharp?  Files, wet stones, oil stones, ceramic,  leather?  What's your technique?  Most of us use knives in our daily life and especially in fishing and hunting, I'd like to know your secrets!!!! :smt006

For Sale / 2007 GMC Canyon, ext cab, 4 cylinder
« on: March 11, 2012, 06:42:29 PM »
I just bought this truck a few months ago.  It's a great little truck, good MPG, strong engine, low miles.  I thought it would be big enough for work but it's not.  So I bought a half ton and need to sell this Canyon.  2007, almost 54,000 miles.  Ext. cab with the small doors that open, brand new wrangler tires with 1000 miles on em, I added leaf springs, new ac delco iridium spark plugs, air filter, cleaned the hell out of the throttle body, cd player, xm radio, 6' bed, brand new aluminum camper shell and rack with locking doors that open on 3 sides.  Super nice for camping or working because you can access all sides of the bed without crawling inside.  I also built a nice little drawer unit that sits above the wheel wells, and has a full length drawer that slides under it for extra storage.  It comes right out, so if you dont want it Ill take it out.  It's the 2.9 liter which has 190 hp, and 195 ftlbs of torque.  Its a strong little truck, and I hate to see her go, but........
Id like to see $12,000 o.bo. the shell was almost 2k and the tires were 500. Price not firm, id like to see it go to an NCKA brother or sister that needs a solid rig.  It's the SL/work truck model, so the floor is all plastic instead of carpet, cleans up easy!

Safety First / Oakland, Oakland, Oakland.......
« on: September 21, 2011, 10:12:58 PM »
About 10:00 last night I hear a noise outside, the dogs bark and I peek out of the kitchen window. Two shady dudes messing with their car, definately shady, but a regular occurance here in East Oakland, and nothing to get worried about.  I watch them for a few minutes and cant figure out what they're up to. The hoods up and the ignition is switching on and off, there playin with the center console and I remember saying to myself, "That car is gonna blow up!"  :smt009

Fast forward to 2 am, I hear my dogs bark and I wake up, they stop and I dont think much of it, as its a regular occurance and if I jumped up with my 40 cal at every little noise I hear I would never get any sleep :smt005 :smt005 Then A looooonnnnnngggggg car horn and I jump up to yell at the punks, and notice an orange light coming through my kitchen window, then realizing it feels kind of warm i look out, and the F$*#*NG car is on fire, BIG FIRE :smt013  :smt009 This is the third time its happened at that same spot, I just watched it for a minute but it started getting BIG FAST, and windows were popping all over the place. Then the trees and bushes started to catch and I grabbed the hose and called 911!!!! :smt011

Im very happy with OPD, they were there in 5 min, and did a great job. It was a big fire and it took them 20 minutes to get the car fire out.  THE COPS NEVER CAME!!! I dont know why they blew that car up, but im sure they did something shady in it and had to burn the evidence. :smt011
Sorry for the long post, It's been a long day and got to get it off my chest....

Fish Talk / Preserved Fish Skeleton
« on: March 12, 2011, 01:54:46 PM »
Alright fellas, I really want to preserve some fish skeletons of different species for display.  Ive always been into biology and such, and think it would be a cool project.  But when I search online, I only find the masters degree explanation.  :smt011 Can anyone break it down and give me the Junior college explanation on the process. :smt003 Any materials I might need?  So far I have read that there are certain bugs that will eat the meat but leave the bone intact.  I have also read about boiling, but im worried that will turn the bones into a gelatonous mess. How do i get started???  :smt006
