I have the polespear thing pretty much down so now I am looking into a speargun.  I am considering a JBL D-6 or D-7 given my budget and the visibility/kelp issues here in NorCal.

What do you think?

Any owners out there willing to give a nod?

Mostly looking at blue/black rockfish with the occasional "other" tossed in the mix.  Not really looking at Cabs or Lings due to size limits....Afterall, it is a little hard to release a fish once you speared it.

Might shoot some perch as well but that is what my polespear was really designed for.

I am going to be in The Trinidad (NorCal ) area in late September and I am always looking for fishing partners......Was going to bring a yak but with the closure I don't see the point anymore.

Would also LOVE to find a place to pick an ab or two for my hosts while I am up there visiting.  You don't have to point to a specific rock for me but a general area of interest would be a huge help.

Gearing Up and Rigging Up / Carry Handles....................Am I insane??
« on: September 07, 2008, 11:32:22 AM »
No longer Yakless.......THANKS MARK!!............But with my back and knee issues, proper lifting of even something as light as my new (to me  :smt001) Ocean Kayak Scrambler XT is.  So here it goes.

Am I COMPLETELY out of my mind for wanting to mount a handle on either side of the balance point to make lifting/carrying MUCH easier.  I am thinking high density plastic or even BRASS mounted with brass screws and drywall anchors??

I am also looking at fabricating an anchor system as well.

The towed, floating net "live well" seems pretty simple to me.

That is short for Desert Eagle Folks!

Getting a SMOKING Deal on a used kayak but I need a roof rack for my Nissan Maxima 4-Door Sedan.

Ok..............Went to Wind Toys and they want nearly $400 for a roof rack system.  Really very reasonablefor what I would be getting but WAY out of my price range.  Before I start throwing one together out of pvc, swimming pool noodles and bungie straps do any of you D0-It-Yourselfers have a design that you have used with success or any other possible suggestions.

I would prefer not to ruin my cars paint job.

I was thinking about showing some pvc tube through some jumbo pool noodles and securing the noodles to the car top and the yak to the noodles with bungie straps and adjustable buckles.  Would cover the pool noodles with a removable ( and therefore washable sleeve of thick microfiber cloth to protect the paint.

What do YOU think..............I am a total newbie to the yak thing and seriously budget limited.

General Talk / Make Your Own Gear

Making pole spears and sling spears is easy..............I can show anybody how..........

BUT

Does anyone else out there make their own gear?  I have seen some pretty tricked out kickboards, and I am looking into making my own weight belt because paying $3.50/pound for lead is INSANE.

I will post my pole spear making tips if anyone else wants to jump in with gear making tips it would be great.

Fun Game if you can find it...If you are a Spear Fisherman and conditions are blown out, it might help with withdrawal symptoms.

Want to get a league together?

I'll post my high score if you post yours.

General Talk / Google Earth

Its a free program folks, and I use it extensively to plot fishing hot spots and other info.  How about a Google Earth link with the best haul out/launch spots for an archive on this forum?

I think it would be a great resource.  I am not thinking of blowing up secret spots or anything....Just reference to the best local spots to launch and beach..........You could even add recommended campgrounds, restaurants, tackle stores...............

What do you think?

Kayak Diving and Spearfishing / Help a Nube Out

Got the pole spear design down pretty well......I think......Now I just need time on the water which I hope to start with tomorrow.

I am COMPLETELY oblivious when it comes to spearguns however...and I am on a budget so some advise from the pros/regulars would be greatly appreciated.  I am mostly Sonoma and Mendocino coast with rare trips to Humboldt and will only be spearing when water clarity is pretty good and the fish are shallow.  Looking for blacks and blues mostly in open water..........Rocks can be rough on tips and I am not educated enough yet to make judgment calls on cabs or lings to my satisfaction.  Not interested in secret spots...........I have my own.........More interested in basic mechanics, tips, techniques...........One on one lessons........You share your skills I share mine......

Used vs. New Spearguns
Make your own..........Got any Designs you want to share?
