Craftsmen's Corner / First rod build in a long time
« on: August 05, 2013, 11:30:25 PM »
Finally finished a rod that I've been picking away at for quite some time.  Many of you know that I built rods as a business for more than 10 years and with a growing family and increased work responsibilities I pretty much quit rod building a couple years ago when I added grad school to the mix.

I think that having been away from the craft for a couple years was good.   I re-discovered my enjoyment of this artistic outlet without the pressure of dealing with customers, timelines, maintaining a website, and the other administrative aspects of doing this as a business.  I think I'll be keeping it this way!

I had this Rainshadow SWS597 blank in my shop that was begging to be built.  This one is a 7'10" composite blank rated for 15-30 lbs... I have been using its big brother (15-40#) version as my go to rock fishing rod for years.  That one I trimmed down to 7'6", but I left this one at full length because I wanted a bit more action for a rod that performs equally as well with rockfish jigs as for salmon trolling and keeping the tension on with barbless hooks.  I think this one will do the trick.

I went with the blue water camo grips to accent the decorative abalone veneer inlay, Fuji palm support reel seat (my favorite), and Fuji titanium framed SIC guides, acid/spiral wrapped of course.

Looking forward to breaking it in at Albion.

General Talk / My Monster
« on: March 22, 2011, 12:31:34 PM »
I cashed in some WAF and was able to upgrade my archery equipment to the current century.  My previous bow was a mid 1980's Golden Eagle Falcon Turbo "E"... I stuck a few critters with it over the years, but after shooting some of the new equipment, I got goosebumps and giggles and really saw the need to upgrade.  Maybe the Falcon will become a bow-fishing setup... we'll see.

I acquired a used 2010 Mathews Monster 7.0 and just got it sighted in to 40 yards in the past week or so.  Just in time for one more hog chase up at Lake sonoma (weather permitting).  Then some new strings will go on it before Turkey season.

I really want to chronograph this bow... it ought to be smokin with my 31 inch draw length at 70 lbs.  The closeness of the 20,30, and 40 yard pins attests to that already.  I'd like to eventually have 50 and 60 yard pins dialed in as well.

Here's the Monster.  Thanks to resident archery gurus Chuck, Stu, Juan and others for your help in scoping out my purchases.  So far I'm happy as a pig in... well... you know what.  Here piggy piggy!

-Mathews Monster 7.0
-QAD Ultra drop-away rest
-Spot Hogg Real Deal sight
- Mathews Focus grip
- Vortexx 4-arrow quiver
-I'm also shooting FOB's instead of fletching... they seem to work very well so far.  http://starrflight.com/
-I also picked up a Leupold Vendetta bow mounted range finder at the cabelas Bargain cave in MN for $150... couldn't pass it up.  (I have figured out a way to disable the potential use of the visible aligment laser to make it legal for hunting in Ca per my interpretation of the regs, so I'm not really interested in anyone else's opinion on this point :smt002).

General Talk / WI Gun Deer Season - Nov. 2010
« on: November 27, 2010, 09:51:42 AM »
Just got back from a week in the north woods of Wisconsin chasing whitetails.  Great hunting weather for once... temps in the single digits up to the low 30s with averages in the mid to low 20's.  We had a dusting of snow early, but on Tuesday night we got 4 inches of fresh powder covering everything.

However, the full moon was working against us with a few clear nights allowing the deer to frolic with gay abandon in the moonlight, and not move much during the day.  It took me five days, but on Wednesday, things finally went my way.  I came across a fresh bed with tracks leading away in the fresh snow.  I followed it no more than 30 yards and saw some movement in the thick woods ahead.  A couple more steps and I had a better vantage point.  The deer turned sideways and I could get a decent peek at it.

Having just sat in my favorite pine tree for nearly 3 hours, my plan was to walk/stalk to warm up as I headed to another blind nearby to warm up.  Being mildly hypothermic and pretty jacked up on finally seeing a decent buck, it wasn't my best shooting, but let's just say the .338 Federal got the job done.   It was a 2 1/2 year 8-pointer... good eater and nice buck for day 5 of the season.

Unfortunately, I was almost 2-miles into state forest land so there would be no 4-wheelers involved in dragging the deer out until I got it back to our property line.  Fortunately, the 4-inches of fresh snow made the drag about as good as it could be.  1.5 hours later I had the deer back to the property line.

I have to say, I felt great dragging that buck out of the woods.  After not going back to hunt for a decade, this was the second year in a row I've been able to get back for deer season.  It's the most time I get to spend with my Dad and Brother all year and as everyone can imagine, it is great therapy to leave everything behind and blend into the woods for a week.  To top it off, the fresh snow covering everything was aboslutely gorgeous and the sun came out just as it was time to start dragging... I had to stop a few times just to soak it all in.  It isn't the biggest buck I've shot by any stretch, but it will definitely be one of the most memorable.

Butchered it out on Thanksgiving and was able to fit 50 lbs of vacuum packed frozen venison into my carry-on bag... "buck in a bag" as I call it.

Score so far for our party of five (two of whom could only hunt the weekends) is two bucks (8-pt and 4-pt) and three does.  They'll be out there this weekend to try to fill the remaining buck tags.  Does and yearlings have been seen in great numbers, but bucks have been quite elusive this year.

Gearing Up and Rigging Up / Juan's new weapon
« on: September 30, 2010, 10:38:05 PM »
When Juan took one of the top spots in last years AOTY, he won a custom rod from yours truly.  Finally had the chance to build it.

Turned out to be one of those rods that I wish I could keep... I guess that's why I put Juan's "handle" (Mako 1) on it... so I'd be forced to set 'er free.

Hope you enjoy it Juan... sorry I couldn't get it to you earlier.

Probably will be my last build for a while... starting an MBA program next week that I expect will severely impact my spare time for the next 18 months.

General Talk / Gobble Gobble... Thwack!
« on: May 13, 2010, 08:26:45 PM »
Allen and I teamed up on the gobblers early this morning... wound up bagging my first bird thanks to Allen's teamwork in pushing the birds my way.  Nice day to start a workday.

The NAP Gobbler Getter put a nice hole in the side without actually punching through the bird entirely.  Even so, the bugger flew over 100 yards with the arrow in him before coming to rest along a trail right near a little kitty cat that thought he was looking at Manna from Heaven.

The kids thought it was cool... good show and tell material for monday.  The wife thought it was cool... good table fare for a dinner with friends on Sat night.  I gave the feet to the dog who may regret eating them tomorrow, but today he clearly thinks I'm da' man.

Good times!

General Talk / Wild Hog Smackdown - 10/3/09
« on: October 04, 2009, 02:12:54 PM »
Finally got a chance to put the .338 Federal  TC Encore Pro Hunter Pistol to the test on some Sonoma County hogs.  Had a last minute opportunity to hunt the afternoon at my friend's property near the headwaters of Austin creek.  I was able to stalk up on a nice group of hogs and put the hurt on two of them, both nice eating size.  The sow was probably in the 80# range and the boar was larger, maybe 120 or 130# range.

This windy weather was great for spot and stalk but you really had to use your eyes.  Stalked up on lots of deer and these piggys were hanging out near a group of deer that sort of acted as my indicator that some pigs were around the corner.  They got mildly spooked by me and headed one direction, but the presence of these pigs caused the deer to come back and take off the other direction.  The deer in turn, got the pigs on their feet and moving around just enough to present themselves to me.  After I popped the first one, there were several other flying everywhere, including one that ran up hill right past me at about 20 yards...  you never saw a guy look harder for the next bullet than me.  After I got another round chambered, the boar came up over the hill and I was able to knock him down too.  Both shots were around 50 yards.

Suffice it to say, the .338 Federal is like a piggy sledge hammer.  It was great fun to get it broken in in the field.  The shot went all the way through the sow, but stopped in the hide on the opposite side on the boar.  The sow was shot right in the heart, which of course caused the old song by Bon Jovi "Shot through the heart... but you're too late..."  to be stuck in our feelbe caveman minds all night.  Had both pigs skun and boned out by 9:00PM and was home by 11.

I got to escape this morning and fish the Mendocino county coast.  Ocean was as flat as could be and it got even more glassy as the day went on.  Fished from about 8 till noon.  Clear water... nice and green.  Aside from the normal assortment of rockfish that were C&R'd and several C&R lings, I went home with two nice lings (30 and 36 inches) and a fat 23 inch vermillion.  Lost the tug-o-war with a few other big fish during the day... that's how it goes.

The bite was on and off with the big tide today.  Everything was caught on jumbo plastics... dark green colors were the ticket.

Also, this time was my first trip using the Shelton fish descender.  I had my spare rod rigged up with it and a 12 oz torpedo weight.  Used it on a few chinas that didn't want to go down.  Makes really easy and quick work of the floaters.  Two thumbs up.  If you don't have one,  you need to get one.

Gearing Up and Rigging Up / Otobe's new weapon
« on: September 04, 2009, 10:57:23 PM »
If you recall, Otobepelagic won one of my custom rods for his AOTY prize last year.  Well... I finally got around to building it for him and was pleased to make the hand-off today.  Lookout Patrick... pops has a new weapon!  Kinda reminds me of that Darth Vader / Luke Skywalker thing...  Anyhoo... here's a few quick pics.

Ingredients:
-Rainshadow SWS696 graphite/glass composite blank trimmed back to 7'4", rated for 20-40#.
-Fuji Titanium framed SiC guides acid wrapped.
-EVA grips with X-shrink tube over the top.  Extended foregrip for floatation (be sure to test it with your reel first Allen).
-A whole bunch of good fish mojo  :smt002

I have a charbroil H20 electric smoker for sale.  Thought I'd offer it here before craigslist.

It's in very good shape and includes a cover.  I've added an extra rack level to make three racks for meat.  Works great, just don't need it anymore since I bought my Traeger pellet grill.

$40 and you must pick it up from me in Santa Rosa.

Conditions looked excellent so I played hooky today and went fishing.  Got on the water at around 7:AM.  Flat calm and overcast... clear water... nice!  Tomales Bay is extremely alive right now!

I worked my way near hog island looking for some bait and scored some jumbo jack smelt only to let them go again once I found the main bait schools... sardines were busting all over the place south of the island all day long.  Enormous schools and some mackeral thrown in.  So I loaded up on very lively jumbo sardines and one mack and got on with fishing.

Several boats were working various spots with most congregated south of the island off the sandy point.  There was no wind for most the early morning so instead of basically sitting still I trooched and trolled and covered a lot of water.  Caught a nice Leppie mid morning and saw several butts landed by boaters.

About 11:00 I finally hooked up on a nice butt... 30-inch range... got it to color... drew my gaff... stuck it and layed it in my lap to give it the wood shampoo... just then it gave me the mad-halibut lap dance and things quickly went sideways.  It danced right off my lap and into the drink and my hooks caught on my rudder cable, thus causing my long sought after legal halibut to go bye bye.  Two guys were in a boat nearby watching every move... when they saw the lap dance, they didn't say a word.  All I could say was "that sucked".  That sucked.  I know... the never-ending debate... net vs. gaff... BTDT.  I prefer the gaff... I've lost them from the net before too.  I just didn't have my game together and paid for it.

I kept fishing.  About 30 minutes later in nearly the same spot I hooked and landed a 26 incher.  Got the routine dialed on that one... stick it, lift it, freespool, game clip, wood shampoo... game over.  At that point I was stoked.  I haven't brought a halibut home for a long long time and that one felt great...I"m sure it'll taste great too.

Off the water at about 1:00.   That place is alive right now and with the mild tides this weekend, I'd go again if I had the time.  Saw a big sturgon jump in there too.

My fish were caught in the flats south of the island in about 14 feet of water and during the mid day outgo.   Boats scattered all over the bay were landing fish occasionally... they're in there.

Kunz out.
