Hookups and Fishing Reports (Viewable by Public) / Lake Mendocino anyone?
« on: November 03, 2006, 09:34:03 AM »
Just got my fish finder.  Will install it tomorrow and would like to test it out at Lake Mendo on Sunday.  Anyone interested in joining me?  I plan to be there in early afternoon (around 2:00pm) and fish until dark!

When does the "season" start?

I have a outdoor writer buddy in San Diego that wants to do an article on kayak sturgeon fishing and I would like to look at tide tables and give him some open windows to think about coming up.

MolBasser

Hi MolBasser,

You can catch them year round but the best time is from November through March.

I live in the area, let me know if you want to hook-up this weekend for some "scouting"  :smt006

You already read the reports from Sean, Dan, & Jody so I won't need to "bore" you with mine.  Only want to add more pictures from this "wonderful" trip.

We met Sean at the bait shop close to South end of the lake:

Jody finally caught this "jumping" bass when we went ashore to stretch our legs after the whole morning paddling:

My very first striper caught from the kayak!

Jody first striper:

Dan got his first one for the afternoon:

Thank you all your guys for the suggestions/tips, we defenitely had a great time fishing at this lake!!!

Thank you for the map and "hot" spot Marmite!

Jody,

I also bring my yellow Malibu Mini-X.  See you in the morning.  Sleep tight ...

Thank you all for the tips.  We'll give it a try.  Even if I don't catch any fish, I'll take lots of pictures to include in my report.   :fishing2

Buy your miinows down here and use a air pump in a 5 gallon bucket to keep them alive.  Buy a good air pump $35 to 50. Jumbo minnows.  There is a bait shop near Clear Lake (Lakeport) that has bester bait than the one at Mendo.

Ken kickfish

Hi kickfish,

Thank you for the tip, but I don't know the Clear Lake area either.  I'll check with Jody and work-out a plan for tomorrow.

Baitshop is on the way to South Launch. It opens at 8:oo and has what you need LIVE JUMBO MINNOWS.Read the section on Mendo(opening NCKA page)written by:Sean-The Master. If you are launching from S.Launch you will pass the shop, then only minutes to lake. The Lake Mendo exit off 101 takes you straight to the S.launch,a few turns(follow signs-easy)

Thank you for your info. & suggestions.  Jody & I are not familiar with this lake as this's the first trip here for both of us.  We would appreciate any pointers as where to fish as this is a big lake.

I don't know where to get live bait up there.  This will be my first time, so I just figured I'd be using lures, etc.  I can meet you in Vallejo, just give me a location off the fwy and a time.

Jody

Why don't we meet at the bait shop in Vallejo at 6am.  I'll post the direction to the bait shop before noon.

Hi Jody,

Do you know where to get live baits?  I checked Yahoo Yellow Page in Ukia and found only 1 place: Ron's Grocery & Tackle but when I called the number listed it's no longer in service.

Sailfish,

It's about a 3 hour drive for me, so if i leave before 5am, I should be there around 8am., if I don't get lost.  Have you been there before?  I was going to use Mooch's directions he posted under places to launch and camp. His directions mention a picnic table graveyard; we can either meet there on at the Ranger check in facility on Marina drive. Whatever works for you.

Where are you coming from?

Jody

I live in Benicia so it's about 2-hour drive for me.  If you want to, we can meet in Vallejo around 6am.   If it's inconvenience for you then we'll meet at the Ranger check in facility.  I never been there so will try to "google" or "yahoo" for the direction.  Wonder if the mobile phone work there, so we can contact each other in case one of us (or both) get lost  :smt003

Sailfish -

The O'Neil Fore Bay is next to San Luis Reservior just off of highway 152 west of highway 5. The Mediieros area is a good kayak launch site. Check out Mooch's photos of his stripers from last week. The stripers can get much bigger with some in the 50# class. I have fished there a few times with mixed results. The wind can be really bad so check the reports. Good luck!

Scott

Thank you for your information.

Thanks for the info.  With the strong off shore predicted, the forebay might be a bit nasty.  I'll probably go north to Mendo.

Jody

Where and when do we meet on Friday?  Let me know your plan and we'll kayak fishing together.
