Fish Talk / Fisherman Nets Blue Fin Tuna
« on: November 22, 2011, 09:26:46 PM »
Fishing trawler nets a 881 pound Blue Fin Tuna and loses it. http://news.yahoo.com/blogs/sideshow/man-catches-881-pound-tuna-seized-feds-194650751.html

From the article:
Quote
"They said it had to be caught with rod and reel," a frustrated Rafael said. "We didn't try to hide anything. We did everything by the book. Nobody ever told me we couldn't catch it with a net." Rafael says he has meticulously prepared for a giant catch like this, purchasing 15 tuna permits over the past four years for his groundfish boats.

Apparently he forgot to read the fishing regulations during his meticulous preparations. FAIL!

Recipes / Preserving Crabs
« on: November 09, 2011, 05:37:06 PM »
Suppose you got more crabs than you can eat in a few sittings, how can you preserve the meat? Can I just toss them in the freezer after cooking and cleaning them? Or would the meat taste like mush after being frozen?

Yikes! And the competition resumed after a brief interruption, probably for changing wet suits.

Gearing Up and Rigging Up / Kayak Repair
« on: August 24, 2011, 02:15:19 AM »
After a few seasons of dragging my P13 up and down beaches, its keel has suffered serious wear, and also have some deep gouges. I am thinking of rebuilding the worned out area using polyethylene weld rod. Polyethylene has a melting point around 250 F, but all the heat guns I have seen have temperatures starting above 500 F. I am afraid of melting a hole in the keel.

Do you guys have any first hand experience or tips you can share on how to go about this repair?

Fished the shoal between the green buoy and the breakwater this morning with Lunker and Orca4. Conditions were unbelievable: sunny, no wind, and only an occasional swell. Kept 2 kelp greenlings, a gopher, and a black and yellow. Also very carefully released a sculpin.  :smt003

Orca4 was only there to break in his shiny new kayak, so he mostly followed us around. Around 1pm, he headed in while Lunker and I continued to fish.

After another hour of fruitless jigging, I was ready to call it a day. I looked around for Lunker, and saw him clinging to his capsized kayak. I raced over, and saw that he was struggling in the water wearing an unzipped PFD, and unable to right his kayak. After I talked him through the process of righting his kayak and self rescue, he was finally able to get back on his kayak. But he had lost all his gear: rods and reels, tackle box, bait... I was able to recover whatever was left floating. But the rods and reels are at the bottom of the bay.

Lunker was very lucky today. Had the conditions not been as nice as they were, he would have been in serious trouble even after just a few minutes of immersion wearing a t shirt and jeans. I hope this experience did not scare him off the water for good.

Conditions look amazing for this Friday. 1-2 foot swells, 5-10 mph wind. Anyone interested in fishing the Monterey / Carmel area?

Conditions look perfect: 2-3 foot swells, 7 mph wind, partly cloudy,  67 - 69 degrees. Beats the 90+ degree heat in the east bay. Anyone interested?

Hookups and Fishing Reports (Viewable by Public) / SWS Monday 6-6
« on: June 05, 2011, 10:44:49 AM »
Anyone thinking of heading out of SWS Monday morning? The conditions are very calm. Cloudy, with winds less than 10 knots, and 2 to 3 foot swells. The only thing missing is the sun.

Went on my first halibut hunt of 2011 with gelbyak. Water was very glassy with almost no wind when we left the harbor. It looked to be a very promising for fishing. The swells and wind did pick up after 11am, but it was still manageable.

We trolled the sandy area south of the lighthouse in about 60 feet of water until around 1pm, with nothing to show for but bait stealing white croaker. I used frozen squid, and gelbyak used frozen herring, with the same results.
