After reading all the reports on this site I had a few hours away from work this weekend to take a steelhead drift boat trip.  We went out on the clearwater river out of Orifino, ID with a great guide.  Even though it was cold we caught 5 and had two other bites. I now understand why people love these fish.  Now I just want to try it on a yak.  I really am starting to get used to the Hawaii heat.

Gearing Up and Rigging Up / Rod for Avet MXL 2 speed
« on: December 08, 2007, 11:16:43 AM »
I just got a MXL 2 speed cheap because it had a blemish, can anyone recommend a good rod for Mahi and possibly some alaska like bottom fishing.  I was thinking the MH trevala, but only because every one talks about them here, not because I  have used them.  I am hoping for the around a $100 solution.

Thanks in advance

Ocean Kayaks / Ocean Kayak Kea?
« on: January 07, 2007, 01:19:22 PM »
I think Sean mentioned this Kayak a while ago.  I was just wondering if anyone has any recommendations on getting one for a small kid, or any other recommendations.  I have been taking him in the tandem for a while and he is really interested in going in his own kayak.  I would also be happy for any more ideas of other yaks.

Thanks

Hookups and Fishing Reports (Viewable by Public) / 27 December, Oahu
« on: December 27, 2006, 03:27:18 PM »
Went out today for another great day with good weather.  The trade winds have been blowing strong for the last month so it has been great to get out.  I trolled fresh bait and tried using a drop back loop with a rubber band as a release, it worked allright, but I am still working on the patience after the initial strike.  I had one big hit that took a lot of line, no hook up.  I think it was a Aha, a very toothy fish that will hit bait, but is hard to hook up.  I trolled for a long time, but no pelagic action so I trolled in over the outer edge of the reef and caught one small Omilu(Bleufin Trevally), the treble hooks got him pretty bad in the gut as I brought him in so I kept him for lunch.  There were a bunch of green sea turtles in Kailua bay today, I still find them amazing to watch.

Hookups and Fishing Reports (Viewable by Public) / Christmas Eve Oahu
« on: December 24, 2006, 06:54:52 PM »
I went out today for about 6 hours trolled fresh bait.   I had two hook ups, but no catches.  The first I think was a large barracuda and the second was a Mahi Mahi.  The Barracuda towed me around for a while, but I don't think the hook was even in his mouth.  The bait looked like someone put a screw driver in it ten times.  The Mahi Mahi I saw jump when I set the hook, but came off right after. I did have a pod of about 100 dolphins that kept coming by, but no more fish excitement.  Overall great day of fishing and wanted to wish everyone a Merry Christmas.

Hookups and Fishing Reports (Viewable by Public) / Peacock Bass Oahu 24 Nov
« on: November 24, 2006, 04:55:55 PM »
I heard they had bass in lake Wilson on Oahu and figured I had to give it a try.  I used every bait I had and finally got one just a foot off the bank in 12 inches of water on a white rapala.  I casted to the spot after seeing some movement and as soon as it hit the water the fish attacked it.  After talking with some locals, most of them freeline small bait fish and that is how thy usually get them.  They say they have caught bass up to 7 lbs in the lake.  I might try again in the spring when the action picks up.

Hookups and Fishing Reports (Viewable by Public) / Mahi 9/10 Kailua Bay
« on: October 09, 2006, 04:29:14 PM »
I finally caught one!  I paddled out to 125 -150 foot waters today and caught a small Mahi.   I had a much larger fish that gave me a sleigh ride for about 10 minutes, but lost him after the third time he took out line.  The Little mahi came after a big hit and line pull out.  I have been missing a lot of them after big hits and a local guy told me to let a bunch of line out and just let the bait sit where it was and the fish will come back today it worked.  I know it is small, but it was an exciting fish I think it jumped out of the water five times.  Now the hunt for the big ones!

Well, I finally caught something today and thought I should post and let some of my old NorCal friends know I can still catch a fish.  I would have posted in Hookups yesterday, but I didn't think any one would make the paddle.  I caught these two Papio in 125 foot of water in Kailua bay, Oahu, the 5 pounder on scampi tipped with squid and the 6 pound one on a Ballyhoo.  Overall beautiful day and the trade winds are down for the whole weekend.

Hookups and Fishing Reports (Viewable by Public) / North shore 4/9/06
« on: September 04, 2006, 11:39:22 PM »
I thought Randy and Sean might be interested to see their old kayak on the North Shore of Oahu.  It was great day, trolled a ballyhoo for about 4 miles in 100-200 ft of water.  I had two hits, but the only results were bait fish cut in half just behind the hook.  I hope to get the Hawaii skunk off soon.

Jim and I got out there early this morning.  The surf was the worst I have seen it since Jim and I have been watching it.  Watched for about an hour and then decided there were small windows and we were going to give it a try.   Lesson learned from today when people say " I have to see this" before you you try something, you might want to rethink your plan.  We headed out and got to the last wave in the pictures and we were trying to time it, but the window was to short.  So we gave it one hard try and got rolled pretty good.  It is amazing how small the kayaks are when you are in a bad spot.  I know we could have made it yesterday comparing the surf, but today was not a good day to try.  Overall great day and a fun attempt, after that first try we had people cheering for us to try again, but I think they were doing it for entertainment, and not looking out for our best interests

The conditions look right to try for Salmon out of Marina State Beach Tomorrow.  I am just looking for someone to go because it could be a long solo paddle.  My plan is to launch at Marina state Beach and then fish between Mulligan and soldiers club.  Today it looked like it was launchable, but I have not tried before.  It looks like low tide should be around 0630 So I am willing to try anytime between 0530 and 0630.  If the surf picks up I plan to paddle down to MBK and put in, overall it looks like it would be a 8 mile paddle worst case.  Any advice and company welcome.

Anna, John, Jim and I went out of Stillwater Carmel today looking for halibut.  We did a couple of drifts at 60 ft and then went out to 140 ft to get sandabs for dinner.  we ended fishing for sandabs for a couple of hours and having a great time.  Jim caught what we thought was a 17 inch halibut in 100 ft of water and released, but that was the only halibut we saw today.  I think we could have had a lot more luck if we had focused on the halibut in shallower depths.  Overall we had a great day with great company!  I am hoping to get out to stillwater next week to try for halibut again.
