Kayak Sailing / Anyone sew sail before?
« on: February 07, 2024, 11:33:27 PM »
I have a snark sailboat whose thin sail is deteriorating after 40 years. It may not hold up to strong wind any more.

My friend happens to have a sail that is torn. Supposedly the wind blew so hard, that the sail is ripped apart into two pieces. (Is it possible? this is very strong sail fabric.)

Anyway he gave me the sail pieces. I think I can cut from one of the torn pieces a section that matches the shape and size of the snark sailboat, and use that instead. Has anyone cut and sew sail before? Any general tips?  Especially, do I need to do anything with the cut edge?

We have a low tide day coming up. I am planning to go visit a spot in Mendocino that is outside any protected or reserved areas. A lot of purple urchins will be exposed. Can I hammer those to help with the infestation problem?  If so, what are the rules? Is there a limit on how many I can smash? (Not harvest)

If I harvest some, what’s the limit?  Just want to verify against what I researched.

I see a few red ones in the mix. Are they a problem too to be eliminated?

Finally, I heard that a puncture by a small pointy hammer will kill the urchin ; doesn’t need to be completely crushed. Is this true?

I say you didn't read the regulations, because it's clearly stated. :smt009

As ThreemoneyJ pointed out, it's not so clear! The rules book does not cover shorepicking, nor smashing. A bit too much to assume.  And in general I just want to double or triple check.  Changes can come mid season in a separate document.

General Talk / Re: Where can I download 2023 full year's tide table?

From my computer, I use: http://tbone.biol.sc.edu/tide/sites_uswest.html  WWW Tide and Current Predictor
You have several options to choose plot options.

Paul

This one allows 2 years data in one go!!!!

I need them in Excel format so to filter out the best tide days/times.  Saves a lot of time.

Thanks to all!

General Talk / Where can I download 2023 full year's tide table?

Does any site provide this?  I hope to keep this for record.

Alternatively, I remember sporting goods store used to have tidetable free for the taking.  Do they still offer this?

My dock was damaged last winter.  Wind/wave was so violent that the boat ripped off the piece of 2x8 board that the cleat is attached to.  For this upcoming winter I want to put in some shock absorber.

But as with anything marine, this is a bit pricey.  And the ones I looked at does not even list how much force it can sustain.

So I am thinking, can I improvise my own shock absorber?  Maybe hook up a small tire?  Anyone has tried to create your own boat line shock absorber?

Divers and shore-based anglers are exempt from season and depth restrictions affecting the RCG complex and other federally managed groundfish
(sections 27.20(b)(1)(C) and 27.20(b)(1)(D)).

Not to be anal but because regulations can have many ifs or buts, I always want to confirm from another angle.

Does the above mean if I am fishing standing on a jetty like the HMB jetty, I can catch rockfish all year round and keep them?  Two weeks ago I was there; caught a few rockfish but let them all go because I wasn't sure whether I could keep them.  I was aiming for halibuts.

I seem to recall that is the rule, but looking through the Ocean Fishing Regulation I can't find this exact phrase.  Can you help?

General Talk / Re: Registering kayak with DMV for CF number
« on: May 05, 2023, 11:28:24 AM »
Can you vet the list of fees, totaling $149, that DMV wants me to pay to register my $250 kayak?  What are they and are they legit?

I went to register my kayak this morning.  Some experience it was.  One confusion after another.

First the staff did not know and could not comprehend why there is no previous title. I explained it was previously human powered but now I want to put an outboard motor on it. The rep thought about it, got up, went to some back office.

Rep came out and said "why don't you get the motor first, then you can register". I took out my phone, show the rep a picture of the kayak, pointing to the 2x4 mounted on it, and explained that the motor is ready to go on that mount. We can consider the motor already on the kayak. The rep got up and went to back office.

Rep came out and started keying in data. Then system asks for "emission certificate". I don't have it and don't know what it is, so I asked the rep what it look like? The rep explained it's just like with automobile; you get it from the dealer.  I registered cars before; I don't really recall any emission certificate. I asked what the certificate looks like? The rep got up again; went back to office.

Rep came out saying "Go to dbw.ca.gov and they have info there. Get the certificate, then come back."  The staff pushed my paper back signaling we are done for today.

I was determined to get a CF number; so I told her "how about I register the boat without the motor? that should bypass the emission certificate requirement." That threw the staff off. the staff could not understand what that means or whether that's doable or not.  I explained "if I am to put a sail on the kayak, I would still have to register, but there would be no motor involved; hence no emission involved."  The rep got up and went back to office.

Rep came back out again and said OK we'll proceed.  After punching in more data, the list of fees came off the printer.  It was a whopping $149.  I was expecting to pay only the $49 odd-year reg fee, plus the sales tax on $250, something in the neighborhood of $75.

I looked over the list, a bunch of abbreviations, and many seemingly duplications. I asked the rep what each is, and the rep could not tell me. I could just pay it to get it over with, but I know this mystery will bother me continuously. At this point I did not want to trouble the staff any more; I said "Hmm...  this may not be worth it; let's pause on this registration, let me go check with my buddies at Norcal Kayak Anglers, then I'll come back."

So here I am, asking for help again from the experts. If all those fees are legit for "kayak with sail" (this was the assumption to proceed with today's transaction) I'll gladly pay. But are they?

And what's with the emission certificate for an outboard? (Mine is brand new Suzuki 2.5 hp) Where do I get that? I checked the dbw.ca.gov site that the staff directed me to, and sure enough emission certificate is NOT listed as an item under "Registration - You will need..."

General Talk / Re: What to look for in an ocean fishing rod?

https://www.amazon.com/Ugly-Stik-Tiger-Casting-Rod/dp/B01IDEPLV2/ref=sr_1_11?crid=3MR6GMVNESLBH&keywords=ugly%2Bstik%2Btiger&qid=1683124768&sprefix=ugly%2Bstik%2Btiger%2Caps%2C256&sr=8-11&th=1

Is this Ugly Stik the all-around option talked about above?  I see even "Ugly Stik Tiger" yielded a few different rods (at least by the name).

And, it seems to me most technical data is missing the most critical - how heavy can the load be, before the stick breaks.  Is this not important?  Seems to me this is equivalent to the weight capacity of a kayak, which is very critical data.

A few rods I have now are very thin and bends easily; if I hook a 20 lb halibut I think the rods might break.

I have not given much thought to fishing rods before; typically I just buy some $40 rod from Walmart and use it until something breaks, then I get another one.

I feel a few of my current rods are too soft -- even when I was bouncing the weight I can see the tip bends a lot. At the other end of the spectrum I see people battling sailfish and their rods barely bend. I'm about to buy another rod and thought maybe this time I get the right gear for the ocean fishing.

Experts talk about fast- medium- slow action but that's seems too general. What specific specs should I be looking for in a rod for ocean fishing - let's say to handle a 15 lb halibut?

I completed my kayak's first "sea trial" over the weekend at Half Moon Bay harbor.  Roamed around inside the harbor.  A lot of learning from the trip; a very successful test.

Was hoping to catch halibuts, but only caught rockfish and released.

I saw some gigantic mussels; took a few home.  Are mussels from the inner rockwall eatable?  I figure if not eatable I'd use them as bait.

Did anyone ever launch kayaks at the boat ramp?  is that permitted?  Seems to me that's a much easier launch for me since I can back the truck to water's edge and just slide it into the water.  It's also much easier to get in and out from the dock.

I talked to harbor master, but he does not seem to know much about the boat launch operation..... did not give any firm answer.

General Talk / Re: Registering kayak with DMV for CF number
« on: April 28, 2023, 06:59:25 AM »
I just went through this process at the DMV and paid close to $200 when all was said and done.  The VIN should be written on the side of the kayak and usually will tell you what month and year it was constructed.  They're going to want a bill of sale with signatures from both buyer and seller.  If you don't have that you might just want to fudge it to make your life easier.

Thanks.  I looked carefully, and found it!!  A string of small punched-in numbers; invisible from 5' and beyond.

Did DMV give you a break down of your $200 fee?!  Reading the fees list I'd think the only applicable fee for a new registration is just the $49 for this year (odd year):

https://www.dmv.ca.gov/portal/handbook/agents-handbook-for-registration-of-undocumented-vessels/vessel-registration-fees-and-use-tax/

If not just the $49, my used kayak is $250.  How much fee can I expect to pay to register it?
