As for Hobie paddles, I'm not surprised yours broke apart. I have one that I hope to never use as a spare.
As for shallow or deep, I generaly like it shallow because it's easier to fish, and because your catch won't suffer from baro-trauma, thus affording you the option, or neccessity of catch and release.
If you don't know where you're headed, any road could get you there.
