I forgot to say on my post that the dfg guy that was able to check and see if I had a license with his smart phone and my drivers license told me. If the internet didn't work, (it wouldn't have out on the water), they wouldn't have a choice.

I made a big boo boo for the crab opener last month on a PB. I forgot to make sure my license was in my wallet for the crab opener. It was in my PFD at home. I couldn't find find it for the fish cop at the Scott Peterson ramp (Berkeley). He looked me in the eye and asked if I had one. Pulled out his smart phone and found I wasn't bs'ing. I think he was happy to let me go. He said it was a waste of time to cite me, for him and the courts. I wanted my 10 crab way more than he did.
I wanted to see him the following weekend to tell him I found it (he had told me it's $10 to get a reprint at Big 5). But he wasn't there.
We could have had another disaster that day he wasn't there. We were almost back to Berkeley with our 40 crab all sorted and legal. Then my buddy spotted an extra bucket of crab on our deck under the pots. When we were pulling out the jumbos and tossing the small ones we forgot about that bucket. We tossed them in the bay. If he didn't spot that bucket and the cop was there. What would the fine be?  There was a dozen or so keepers in it.

General Talk / Re: What to do when a seal does this?
« on: November 18, 2014, 04:28:09 PM »
I know somebody that broke the regs last month out at dux. A seal was eating a salmon and they trolled over to it and netted it. It was in perfect shape, just the head was gone. Went from one fish in the box to two.  I didn't know they eat the head first.

Hello Chuck. I'm sorry to hear you have to go through this. It's good they found it early. That's a good reason to be positive and I'm sure you know you still have lots of things to be grateful for. Like family.
My sister in law is a breast cancer survivor. And my dad had Hodgkins in the sixties and seventies. He just had his 83rd birthday wednesday.
Hope to see you 10-11 at hmb. I gotta find a nice piece of driftwood for my hand line.

When this was in the news last week I saw some pretty stupid stuff--by people on bikes. The hipsters here in north Oakland are nuts on bikes and it made me think they should take some classes.
This one dude put up his bent right arm to take a left! Then I took a left off telegraph and a rider comes out to take a left and I almost hit him. He gave me stink eye. He hadn't even looked both ways and he had earphones in! WTF!
I don't like big brother but it would be nice if the stores that sell that stuff would give a safety book to all buyers. But I doubt they'll ever stop passing on the right and running red lights.

I've been to the dux bouy a few times in my Jive. The salmon feel cold against your leg. Did you see the recent report of the two guys in a tandem sit in kayak out at that bouy? They had one over 30 lbs. and another nice one. I almost asked them about the paddle in with all that fish.

Safety First / Re: What's the best handheld radio these days?

Hey Blue--Your radio will be fine. Mine broke down because it's old. I got my moneys worth, just time to get a new one for me. I just miss my girlfriend that used to give me the NOAA weather report every morning.
When are you salmon fishing in Mairin again?

I don't think its a stuck button. No buttons did anything when it was scanning before I pushed the transmit button. The scan wasn't all the channels that were programmed into the scan either. So the chatter I like to listen to here where I live near Emeryville (67,69,14,16) wasn't there. It stopped on 15 a few times, sounded like another 16. Then I pushed the transmit button and it stopped on 13.
Thank you for the tip that they have good customer service. It's probably not under warranty because it's about 6 yrs. old. I  pulled the battery out a while ago and it didn't reset.

My Icom just broke. It was stuck on scan, then I just pushed the transmit button and now it's just stuck on 13. Does anybody know if I can fix it? I push all the buttons and nothing happens.

Up in Washington, a long time ago, the state started giving salmon eggs to an indian tribe to let out at their creek. No way to spawn. Just harvest. When it started I was just getting too old to ski in the bay. Good timing because the gillnets were getting in the way towards the end of the summer. Just north of Everett, across from Langley and the southern end of Camano Island. They call it a bubble fishery  for the non-indians. Tulalip Bay, Tulalip Indian Reservation. Very short paddle for a kayak angler to slmon fish.

Places to Launch and Camp / Re: 411 on launching at Bolinas?

Salmon should be close soon. Wharf road is the end that is more complicated, (currents, surf, surfers). Brighton is the one to use. It's between the channel and the patch. If you need smaller breakers in your face you just walk up closer to the patch. Look at the surf report from the local shop, you can read as many old ones as you want. He's pretty funny sometimes. (2-mile surfshop)

Couple weeks ago that skipper's wife in the charter office at HMB told me that F&G is actually going to want us to catch lots of the fish. I didn't understand the logic but it did have something to do with the low rivers. How do they know it won't rain alot next fall?

It's probably more than you want, but just so you know. CCK in HMB has SK1, then SK2 for learning how to sea kayak with a sit inside. After you take those two, then you can take the surfzone class and rockgarden trips etc. I repeated the surfzone class about 5 times 20 years ago.

NOAA forcast 15-25 through sat., and no wind sunday. But that is probably only way outside where you won't be.
When it's this very common high pressure system HMB will be pretty calm in the morning then the wind kicks up every afternoon. It will be from the north, which will blow you away from the harbor entrance. Thats why everybody goes early. A lot of times it's pretty breezy by 11.
Don't go alone, have a radio, and make sure you can get back on your yak by yourself.
