General Fishing Tips / Re: Port of Sac 411
« on: September 01, 2013, 03:10:50 PM »
We moved a ship up the Sacramento channel yesterday, Pier 5, will sit there for a while. Probably came through a couple hours after everyone was off the water.

My understanding is it is only the second ship to that dock in 6 years, Stockton is the busier port.

Where is a good place for bait? What is hot right now?

Mike's Bait 14th Ave Oakland, usually open at 6:00 am not sure about labor day, Central Bait in Alameda will probably be open by 0900 but usually only has worms, if he does have shiners sells out quick.

Headed out early tomorrow morning 7:00 - 7:30, winds should be light, max flood at Golden Gate is 0900.

Should mention yesterday a 52" leopard and 20 lb halibut were caught in the area, be good to meet some more Alameda kayakers or anyone else if you get a chance to join

There is a Japanese fishing store in Hong Kong?

Yes, they sold the knock-off next to the real thing, Japanese products, also bought a few Tenkara rods, expand to 19 feet.

Picked this up in Hong Kong at a Japanese fishing store, hadn't seen one in the US, collapsible, zippered mesh top with air pump operates on two D batteries. Will let you know how it works.

James,
I have probably seen you our there, I have the moss hobie revo. Thinking all of us from Alameda ought to get together soon at the ARW, things are picking up, lots of bait fish around heard report of school of stripers swimming close to rockwall.

A friend of mine who has lived in Alameda for a very long time told me he caught a flounder Friday in same area from shore. Checked online looks like it is hard to tell difference between flounder and Halibut, maybe difference in tail shape?

Some comments said there is no difference, flounder is Halibut that doesn't grow large, I am sure California Fish and Game cares, what is best way to tell difference?

This has probably been discussed before on NCKA, curious what the consensus is. I fished the the Chesapeake Bay for many years before moving to SF bay area all flatties back there were called flounder, I believe it is 16" minimum.

After three months of trying finally caught a halibut, even though it was undersized I am still counting it. Actually caught it while perch fishing entrance to Balena Bay, light weight rod, 4 lb test, just brought him up to take a look maybe 15". Lots of small perch around, used pileworms.

I also headed west up the rock walk looking for sharks or halibut. Drifted down from the first opening in rockwall when I hit the 40 ft hole (even with stern of gray ships) something hit my line hard, I let him run for a while, as soon as I tightened up the drag to try take a turn he pulled harder and snapped the 40 lb line. probably a big ray or shark, fun while it lasted, turned the kayak side ways.

Beautiful on the water, rare summer SF Bay day, light breeze, blue sky, in coming tide.  Caught a glimpse of the America's Cup boats while I was out there.

General Talk / Re: Can you see the smoke?

RacinRob - you were seeing the column from the American Fire on the Tahoe NF.  I think they are at about 60% containment on that one last I checked.

The Rim fire is out of control.  We had to evacuate several of our field crews.  Here's a link to the current fire perimeter - as Mike stated, it has blown from 15K acres to 105K acres in the last 48 hrs.  Several communities at risk, almost took out the Forest Service Ranger District office in Groveland - still at risk.  Has burned through some prime trout fishing stream/rivers as well.  This one will be interesting to watch.

I spent six years on the ranger station above Groveland when I was a kid, saw my father come home many times covered in pink borate and/or soot. Those firefighters have one of the toughest jobs around.

Fished ARW yesterday and today, no halibut, but baitfish fish everywhere, a friend saw a striper come out of the water chasing anchovies. There are some nice size sharks (up to four feet) if you want have some fun go west toward SF to first opening in rockwall, 50 ft deep hole where the wall juts out into bay. Drift with the out going tide. Had a bite or caught something every time I drifted through. Can be a rough ride in afternoon when the wind is up and tide going out.

566
Most days wind picks up mid-afternoon, you do not have to go out far and if you stay south down toward crown beach you can always sneak back in through Balena Bay estuary.

One good thing launch is still free.

Took a friend out Saturday morning, he borrowed my spare kayak, first time kayak fishing for him he caught this nice 32" halibut on frozen herring. Must have been beginners luck, of course I was skunked, in fact I suggested he switch to frozen herring after I missed the only bite I had all day.
