Wanted To Buy / Looking for a good lake fishing Kayak
« on: July 15, 2016, 10:03:32 PM »
I ran into a friend of mine that is interested in getting into the sport. He is looking for a wider approx 12 foot kayak that is good for lake fishing. Nothing too fancy. Let me know what people have. He lives in the Sacramento area near me.

Hi All, so my 12 year old and I are looking at heading out to New Hogan Lake on this coming Sunday. Call me crazy, but we are going to go out rain or shine (a new friend told me that the best fishing is when it is raining ;-). It will be cold, and it will be raining on and off. We will be trying to get there in the morning and fish as long as we can hang it. Rain gear and warm clothes will be needed for sure.  :smt006

Target:  Stripers, but we will also see if we can convince any salmonoid to bite too :)

Hope to have some company. Yes, you have to be a bit crazy to join us, but we are in for some punishment  :smt044

Any tips are welcome, its our first time out there.

General Fishing Tips / In Search of Brown Trout
« on: December 16, 2015, 09:20:47 PM »
Any suggestions on where to fish in the general Sacramento/Bay Area/Foothills areas if I want to find some Brown Trout? I would normally consider Ice House/UVR but the roads are iced and lots of snow. Same with most of the other Sierra lakes. Any suggestions?

Gearing Up and Rigging Up / Shimano Calcutta vs Cardiff 400 series
« on: November 01, 2015, 08:15:24 PM »
Any thoughts on these two reels? Is the Calcutta 400 worth the extra money over the Cardiff 400 series. My son wants to buy this for Rockfish, Striper, and larger bass. Any thoughts are appreciated  :smt001

Thanks everyone!

For Sale / Wildnerness Systems 130T Tandem Kayak: Ready to fish! - SOLD
« on: October 19, 2015, 08:18:43 PM »
After 1.5 years of learning the ropes of kayak fishing with my son, I am finally going to the dark side and selling my Tarpon 130T.

Here is the NCKA price:
Kayak for $500 and the entire fishing rig for $700. Kayak includes the paddles and custom seat cushions. The fishing setup includes the custom crate with rod holders, Color Lowrance Fish Finder 4 Elite, Battery, Track System, and 2 Rod holders.

Finally, if you are interested, I also have a Wheeleeze full size kayak cart that makes moving this super easy (including over sand and rocks) but that is not included in the price. I am not willing to split any of this up right now.

Let me know if you have any questions.

Fish Talk / Strange Sighting at Folsom Lake
« on: April 19, 2015, 05:01:36 PM »
I have been a traveling monster and also selling/buying a new home. Needless to say, my fishing has been minimal, but took my son out this Sat AM at Folsom Lake. Early in the morning, we found several schools of large fish on the surface where you could see their fins. They were not trout, Salmon, or Bass. We think they were either eels or catfish. I think Cats. Do Cats do this kind of behavior? They had flat heads, dark brown bodies, no distinct dorsal, but we could only get about 10 feet before they would take off and it would be with a very big splash. I would guess they were about 18 inches on average, and the school was 10-15 fish.

As we fished this area, we saw a VERY large fish in the same area. When I say large, 15-20lbs but not a bass or salmonoid. Again, maybe a Cat?

Sorry for no pictures...but no, we were not dreaming :)

Fish Talk / Fish ID Help: Monterey fishing this past weekend
« on: January 21, 2015, 06:01:37 PM »
Gents and Ladies, I believe the attached pic are both large Mackerel, but...I wanted to confirm ID. Caught them off a kayak by the yellow buoy by Monterey Bay Kayaks. One took a 1/0 hook with half a squid on the bottom I was using to try for Halibut. They were fairly thick, and I know what macks look like, but they just looked different. Darker eyes, and more defined ridges by the tail fin. With the Bonita being taken out of Santa Cruz, I thought I would at least ask. Oh...and btw, these guys put up a fight like too! Loads of fun, and we nearly got it to tow our tandem kayak! LOL

Thanks in advance.

We are noobs, so will be spearfishing shallow. Likely PG, maybe SWS. Swell report is looking to increase, so if it is not good, we will not be in the water given I have my 11 year old son with me. Anyone that wants to connect, feel free to text me:  Nine one six, 730 2003. Will be in Monterey tonight and hope to be in the water in the am. Just need to get a float line before going in...

Hope everyone is well. My 11 year old and myself are heading down to Monterey tomorrow AM. Plan is to dive and meet up for the Triton Weigh in at the Black Bear diner. One of the best hunters there, Alex Reynaud is going to do a seminar on band tieing as well.

My boy and I are still rooks, so we will be working the shallows in PG. Anyone want to meet up, hit me up.
