General Fishing Tips / Re: Catching Sanddabs in HMB/Pacifica?
« on: September 29, 2022, 11:01:21 AM »
Thanks for all of the great information in all of your replies! It kind of looks like Monterey would be a further drive but less of a pedal out compared to HMB. Based on the chart it looks like Moss Landing gets pretty deep relatively quickly as well. I haven't tried launching out of HMB but based on the charts it looks like the 120+ FOW is a good distance out, anyone have any idea how long of a pedal that is?

Navionics says from Jaws to the Green Can is 0.8miles.  Straight west from the Green Can to approximately 120ft is roughly 2miles.  Sounds far, but not really, considering that from Jaws to the Red Can is 1.5miles.

Me too!  Got invited to join a Group Campsite in early August at Jughandle.  Seems like Van Damme would have easy access from HWY1, but never launched there yet (surf-fishing only).  Day-use from Albion would probably be good too.

Anyone else have any decent (safe launches)?

Its a serious issue! I thought I had 9 in my bag last weekend when I actually had 10.... doubles start coming over board after a long day on the water you might lose count!

I try to leave a couple fish spots in there just in case I catch a nice one later in the day. (like my last verm)

I use a "pace counter," like from my Army days.  Basically, tie some knots (4 in top section, 9 in bottom section) on cordage (or get fancy and buy some beads for the full "Ranger Beads" effect).  For every keeper fish, I slide a knot down from the 9 section.  When you get to ten, pull 1 down from the top section of 4, and reset lower section of 9 by pulling them back up.  Works great when crabbing as well.  Just tie it to your vest or kayak.  If you lose it, just make another one  :smt003   See pic for reference:

Gearing Up and Rigging Up / Properly rolling cam straps

I don't know why I never bothered to look this up, but TODAY, I finally got around to looking up how to store cam straps:

No more bag full of tangled straps!

General Fishing Tips / Re: Safety of pedal leash
« on: May 10, 2022, 04:57:54 PM »
I always unleashed while launching.  I usually unleash while landing.  The times I forget to unleash are usually in ankle-slapper, "easy" landings.... which is also when I get tangled up in the leash.  I'm either complacent and/or distracted, and I'll step out with my paddle in hand, without fail on the same side as the leash, and the leash will wrap around my leg/legs.  During big surf landings, I'm much more focused on landing safely so the leash comes off as part of the mental checklist.

Gearing Up and Rigging Up / Re: Malone AirFlow2 Bars
« on: April 22, 2022, 12:12:21 PM »
I installed Malones on the family Honda Odyssey.  They've handled a Yakima Box stuffed with duffle bags and on a rare occasion, I've had my Revo13 up there.  Literature says the max load for the Honda is around 160lbs.

I would verify Subaru's weight limits for their racks though.  I seem to recall that back in the day, at least one member had a catastrophic OEM Subaru rack failure while in transit.  Honestly, I trust Yakima or Thule standalone systems more than OEM car racks.

and just know that there are juvenile white sharks around.  It's a popular spot.

What?  "White" as in "Great White"?  Little pissy juveniles things with no self-control ready to mess with a kayaker?  How come the surfers don't worry.  And this is 1/2 mile from Rockaway.. Are these little things there also?

The only problem with Rockaway is that beasty little hill you have to push your heavy fishing yak up at the end of the day.  Most times it seems like you have to have a helper get it up this thing.... (I guess that's what the "community" is for?)   Is there any way to coordinate with others going out of Rockaway on the weekends?

I almost went out Sunday, but 4 1/2 ft and 9.x sec period + a little wind made it kinda uninviting.. Does anyone have any good rule of thumb for safe kayaking wind, swell, period for kayaking out of Rockaway?

And are you basing this on GFS or ECMWF weather forecasts?

Thanks all!

Ehhh, we're in the red triangle... the GWS's are everywhere. There was some good drone footage of juvenile sharks cruising the surfline at Rockaway/Pacifica on YTube a while back.  Just thought you should be aware.  There's a "Hook Up" section that you can post your outings or coordinate a trip to launch/land with others.

I generally use Eddie's math for launching from a beach:  Swell should be more than 2x Period... nothing more than 3ft for me; and no wind over 10mph.  These days, I like my kayaking to be relaxing and comfortable.  :smt003

If you can, search for "LM" or "Linda Mar" = Pacifica State Beach.  Launch from the South end, be mindful of surfers, and just know that there are juvenile white sharks around.  It's a popular spot.

Was able go get in on some fish this week and snacked on like 1 or two freshly fried roes before eating an instant cup o noodles. 30 minutes later.. my midsection was rumbling. Yo... Hit the can and the bowels quickly flushed out with a smoothness. It was kinda cathartic. As I recall, this happened as well prior year when I cooked some thrown in while cooking some ramen w/ egg and veggies. My gut isn't usually all that sensitive to most foods but I might have to watch out with them roes. Maybe too much info, but be prepared just in case...  :smt081  :smt044

This is the kind of hard-hitting reality that I expect from NCKA... it's never TMI; just fair warning.  Thanks for sharing. :smt005 :smt044

I think Fisherman's Life is still trying to sell a boat or two.  Actually, there's a couple of NCKAers that have/had boats for sale.   PM P-Sherman...

Places to Launch and Camp / Re: Crab snaring beaches

def south side of OB...you also don't always need snares to get crabs there  :smt002

This is a great point.  I used to surfcast at night and just before dawn, I could hand harvest dungies on my walk back to the car.

The sewage plant proximity always made me "pass" on the crab found along the beach near there.  It always made me wonder why keeper sized crab were on the beach... We used to call them condom crabs or "stoner" crabs.  I'm sure they were fine though.  :smt003 :smt005 :smt006

Google Maps makes it easier.  Look at the topography of the water near the beach.  Look for long, sloping beaches (indicated by greater space between the elevation lines).  Avoid areas with underwater structure and canyons.  Most sandy beaches will produce along the SMC.  Shoot for High Tide as well.  OB is popular because of access/convenience.

The real secret is... the harder the spot is to get to, the more private it will be, and likely, the better it'll produce.
