Fish Talk / Article on GW attacks
« on: November 07, 2010, 08:41:07 AM »
Interesting article this morning in the Chron regarding attacks by Great Whites. This part caught my eye:

'Sharks usually target the shortest kayak or surfboard when two or more are in close proximity.'

General Fishing Tips / Different way to make rod, etc. leashes
« on: July 04, 2010, 04:18:52 PM »
Browsing another site I found this and it sounded to me like it would work pretty well and be relatively cheap. Read through the comments on how to make it work even better than it supposedly does.

General Fishing Tips / California 'buts up north
« on: April 03, 2010, 02:27:58 PM »
Looking at another site I found this and thought it would be interesting to anyone that lived up north or anyone that wanted to take a drive:

When I lived in Crescent City, I had a Commerical Fishing friend of mine told me he catches litterally hundreds of California Halibut straight off the Klamath River in 120 to 150 feet of water in the late winter and spring every year.  He also said there was no shortage of larger fish in the 20 to 35 pound class.

I don't know how far out you need to go from the mouth to find that water depth or if it's even doable in a yak.
Just throwin' it out there in case anyone's interested.

General Fishing Tips / Dry pants as waders?
« on: October 30, 2009, 06:27:21 PM »
I'm planning on using my yak to reach some otherwise inaccesible areas of rivers for float fishing steelies off the bank.
Has anyone here tried using the dry pants such as Tempest rather than waders? I like the idea of the lightness and breathability without the bib. Better fit too.
How durable would they be if I had to work my way through some brush?

Hookups and Fishing Reports (Viewable by Public) / Final '09 Salmon numbers?
« on: September 12, 2009, 01:38:14 PM »
On another site a final salmon count was done for the 10 day season.

According to Ed Roberts from the Eureka office of CDFG there were 5,360 angler trips with a catch of 670 adult Chinookies. Not a very productive season to say the least.

Places to Launch and Camp / Humboldt launch
« on: August 15, 2009, 01:18:50 PM »
I, along with several thousand of my closest friends, will be fishing for Salmon this upcoming short-season.

I've read here that Shelter Cove is the best place to fish for Salmon from a yak in Humboldt, but the water's only open north of Horse Mountain.

Anybody care to share a launch point where someone with a kayak (me) can access and fish without the possibility the current will direct me to the Sea of Japan? Let me in on this info and I'll be your best friend and invite you to my birthday party.

Gearing Up and Rigging Up / Full wetsuit
« on: April 19, 2009, 03:14:49 PM »
So I've been looking to buy a full wetsuit for Ab diving and found a 7mm hooded suit on Ebay for a decent price.
It's a H2Odessey brand. Anyone have any experience with those? Should I run fast and far from it?

Places to Launch and Camp / Where to launch north of Horse Mountain?
« on: April 11, 2009, 10:37:16 AM »
Now that a KMZ short salmon season has been established, where is a good place to launch? I'm taking time off work to take advantage of this opportunity and would like to try some salmon mooching/trolling.

I would imagine Shelter Cove is too far to pedal/paddle so what are the options?

BTW, I have some dates already booked on a 4-Pack out of Eureka and the owner is checking on whether he can mothership me on days he has other clients fishing. Just drop me off at the places he will be fishing and pick me up on his way back in.

Hobie Kayaks / Hobie rudder
« on: April 04, 2009, 06:16:02 PM »
I have a '09 Revo and last Sunday I took it to Berreyessa. When I was coming in and raising the rudder, the counter sunk screw that holds the forward rudder pulley came through the hull. The inconvenience was hopping out of the yak and raising the rudder manually before I beached it.

Hobie has been informed of this failure. A solution is to replace that screw with a flathead and a washer.

Just thought anyone that has this yak should know because it's not something you can fix while you're on the water.

General Talk / Non-Yak Fishing near Monterey
« on: February 03, 2009, 05:49:43 AM »
I'll be taking a 5 yr.old boy to the aquarium soon and would like to take him on a short fishing trip as well.
Any suggestions on where to get into some surf perch close by?

It will be his first fishing venture and I'd like him to be able to actually catch a fish so a productive area would be helpful. You don't have to give up your super-secret glory hole....just point me in the right direction. Thanks.
