Hookups and Fishing Reports (Viewable by Public) / Tahoe 5-16/5-17
« on: May 20, 2006, 10:05:23 AM »
Launched from Kaspian; 23 miles from the Y on the west side of the lake around 1:30. Sunny, flat, no wind.
After about 30 minutes of paddling I heard a rumble. Looked behind me and decided it was time to get off the water ASAP.
As we were driving away the lightening show began. Rain came and started dumping. I never even got a chance to get my line wet.
Launched from Kings beach the next day; 30 miles around the east side from the casinos. Perfect weather and water.
Trolled in shallow water with a diving plane, flasher, and watermelon Apex in 34 feet of water on my way to the canyon at stateline. Within 150 feet it drops off from 40 feet to 500 feet. I jigged in 180 - 240 feet with no luck. The only fish I marked all day was in 29 feet while I was trolling. Quick strike and came unbuttoned.
Did some fishing but no catching. Conditions made for an awesome day of kayaking.

Leaving here in 10 minutes for Mendocino for some ab diving and spearfishing. We will be staying at the Mendocino Campground. It is right at Comptche-Ukiah road and Hwy 1. Probably leaving Saturday evening or Sunday morning depending on conditions. Will more than likely be kayaking/diving Van Damme area, but if someone shows up with knowledge of a better area I am all for it.
Driving a black Toyota 4Runner with a black trailer hauling a Yellow Prowler 15 and a Blue Prowler 13.
Just follow the smell of cold beer and fresh abs to the campsite.

Hookups and Fishing Reports (Viewable by Public) / Sly Park 5-14
« on: May 14, 2006, 06:13:10 PM »
Took my son and 2 newbies to Sly park ( aka Jenkinson Lake ) in Pollock Pines today. As the gracious host that I am I decided to let them catch fish while I just fished.
I was targeting smallmouth. Threw everything in my arsenal with no luck at all. had a couple of followers, but no takers.
The others caught a few trout, no real size, on yellow Rooster Tails.
I guess it was a successful outing as afterwards both newbies asked me how much and where they could get kayaks.
I know it is only a matter of time before the smallies go wild at Sly Park. It should be real soon.

Hookups and Fishing Reports (Viewable by Public) / Rancho Seco 4-29
« on: April 29, 2006, 04:35:48 PM »
My girlfriend Becky and I met up with Alfredo around 7 am at Ranch Seco. Overcast skies and a little cooler than I expected, but a paddling jacket and light weight quick dry nylon pants and Teva's were very comfortable.
The water was VERY warm as one fisherman told Al he had a reading of 68 degrees. I was amazed at the crystal clarity of the water.
Al hooked up first, and second, and third...etc. I was thinking I was going to be 0-9 this year. ( yesterday's shore fishing at Ice House and Sly Park yielded nada).
Al gave me the right color Senko and Wham! Losing streak broken. Light brown was the ticket.
I hooked up 2 more times when the sun came out on a darker Senko, with each time the fish gettng bigger ( could they get any smaller?).
Afterwards we went to the picnic area and BBQ'd some hot dogs and had potato salad, chips and salsa and beer and soda.
I did the opposite of the Fish Snifffer pose and it sure shows, but at least the skunk streak is broken!

Hookups and Fishing Reports (Viewable by Public) / Honkers get screwed
« on: April 08, 2006, 06:08:34 PM »
Went out to Folsom today to try out something I have been working on. Needs some fine tuning, but the idea worked out OK. I was expecting nasty weather, and since I had only one thing in mind I left the fishing gear at home. Well the weather was PERFECT! Zero wind, slight overcast. I am sure the 38 sail boats in the sailing regatta weren't too happy, but I was.
I paddled to an island that a lot of Canadian Honkers use as a nesting ground. As I got next to shore I saw eggs in about 2 feet of water. Eight of them. With all the excess rain the water has risen quite a bit in a very short amount of time. As I paddled around the small island I noticed more and more eggs under water. I counted a total of 31 eggs, and I could see no more than 3 feet down.
I talked to a PB'er and he said he saw some under water closer to shore in another spot.
Seems all this rain has screwed up more than just the fishing.

General Talk / Reverse fishing seat
« on: April 05, 2006, 06:59:12 PM »
I woke up around 315 this morning and turned on the TV. Could you believe there was a show on kayak fishing on OLN? They had a set up I have never seen before. One guy had a Prowler 15. Right behind his seat, where the flush mount rod holders are, he ran a cutting board across and put a kayak seat on top of it facing backwards. On the rear of the tankwell he tied a wooden dowel which hung over about 1 foot on each side of the kayak. He sat and fished from this reverse seat and put his feet on the dowel. He had the kind of rod holder used to fight big fish mounted on the wall of the tankwell right behind where the normal seat would be, just under the cutting board. Seemed to me that it would put his center of gravity a bit high, but he was nailing some pretty big fish, including sharks.
Anyone ever seen or heard of this technique?

General Talk / Aluminum
« on: March 15, 2006, 06:15:21 AM »
I need to know if aluminum will corrode in salt water. Are aluminum boats treated with something or does the aluminum hold up to the elements in and of itself? Thanks for the info from those of you who know.

Gearing Up and Rigging Up / Prowler 15 rear hatch
« on: March 05, 2006, 12:28:16 AM »
Well I finally installed a small hatch ( deck plate ) on the rear of my Prowler 15 so I could have a little access to the back to add a cam cleat towards the rear. Also to store a small bag for keys, wallet, etc.
The largest the P15 would accommodate was a 4" hatch. Just enough to get an arm in to reach the underside of the deck.

This will also aid me in washing the inside of the kayak. I can flip it upside down, stick a hose in one and and let it wash out the other.

Kayaks / kayak hatch
« on: February 27, 2006, 07:30:16 AM »
Does anyone know if there is a kayak hatch smaller than 6 inches? I want to put a small one an the back of my prowler 15 so I can have access to affix other things towards the rear of the kayak. Well nuts or rivets will not work for what I want to do. I need to put bolts with regular nuts.

General Talk / GW sighting at Ft Ross
« on: February 23, 2006, 01:52:05 PM »
A heads up to those thinking of diving this weekend. I got this CENCAL email today:

"Got a phone call from Clark at bodega dive last night,
he was diving Ft ross with Dave Sereni and one other guy yesterday, got buzzed by a good size white, he said about 4ft tall at mid body.
Him and dave wound up standing on a rock, watching their buddy yell at them that a shark was in front of him,,,,, until he realized thats why dave and clark were standing on the rock.
They had to get back into the water to make the 300yd swim to shore.
no problems other than the rare visit.
I told clark he was extremly lucky to see that, and not get hit."

Hookups and Fishing Reports (Viewable by Public) / The COOLEST-Literally
« on: February 18, 2006, 03:24:53 PM »
I hit Sly Park Lake today, aka Jenkinson Lake. Elevation 3400 +/- .
It started out to be beautiful up there. Little snow on the ground and a few clouds.

Paddled out to just beyond the islands and the wind kicked up a little..and then.......

I was trolling a diving plane with a flasher and a watermelon Apex and it started to REALLY come down.

The squall soon passed and it turned out to be a beautiful day.

I had the ENTIRE lake to myself. Unfortunately the trout and mack's were nowhere to be found, but it was one of the most awesome days of paddling I have ever had. I was hoping it would snow, so I was prepared. Hope I can get in one more snow paddle before the season ends. I just hope the fish are more cooperative next time.

Gearing Up and Rigging Up / New kayak trailer
« on: February 12, 2006, 02:51:30 PM »
Just about completed my new kayak trailer.  Still have a few NCKA stickers to put on it.
I already have plans for another design, but this will fit the bill in the meantime.
The height of the racks is adjustable and the cross bars are easily removeable. I needed it to be this low so I can keep my yaks on it and still  clear the opening to my workshop where I will store it. I can raise the racks to haul  things like bikes along with the yaks.
It holds my Prowler 15, Scupper Pro TW, Tarpon 160 and Prowler13. The front and rear gate can also extend and lay flat giving me room in the bed for 2 more yaks if necessary.

My other trailer is still for sale. Shouldn't be long before the season is upon us and someone snags it.

Hookups and Fishing Reports (Viewable by Public) / Suisun Bay Sturgeon
« on: February 05, 2006, 08:56:05 AM »
Entered the Super Bowl Sturgeon derby Saturday. The target size was 64 inches. I launched from McAvoy Harbor in Bay Point.
Trying to find that kind of water I wanted to fish was a bit difficult, but after 3.5 miles of paddling against the wind I found what I thought would be a good spot.
I fished along side of Ryer Island where there was a nice seam between fast and slow water. There was an immediate  drop off from 10 feet to 26 feet at the seam. The current was pretty fast on one side and considerably slower on the other. With the incoming tide and the flow of the current going against it made for some REALLY rough water. I anchored and fished, and fished, and fished. Got a couple of taps from bait stealer's was all.
I moved around a little, but with no luck. Listening to the radio it seemed that the day was SLOOOOOOOW all around.
I had a grueling 3.5 mile paddle back AGAINST the current and it SUCKED!
By 3 pm 3 fish were checked in. 63 7/8. 63 3/4, and 61 5/8.
My arms feel like they are about to fall off. My GF drove home while I slept the entire way.
Got home, hopped in the hot tub and went to bed. Slept for 11.5 hours SOLID!
For a while the "guy in the kayak" was all the talk on the radio. Most had never seen or thought of sturgeon fishing from a kayak.
First place will get a little over $9000. second over $4000, and so on down to seventh place. And this is for TWO days. So there is 9k given out on Saturday and $9k given on Sunday.
With this kind of $$ and only $30 to enter I was surprised more kayakers didn't enter.
The rules state you need to have a CF #, but when I was signing in and told him I had a kayak, he said just to write kayak where the cf # goes on the entry form. I think the CF # is just so shore anglers can't squeeze in.
Any of us have just as good a chance as any of them. How awesome would it be for one of use to be in the $$ next year??
Next year I will head up current so I can easily bring that big dollar dino back to have him measured.
One side note, we as kayak fisher people communicating on channel 69 RULE!! I could not believe some of the crap I was hearing on 68. This was the channel that gave hourly updates. There were a few people who deserved nothing less than a good thumping for their disgusting comments when they got back to shore.
Made me proud to be part of this kayak group. We have class and we ROCK!!!

General Talk / Sturgeon Derby
« on: February 01, 2006, 11:19:26 PM »
I am looking at entering a sturgeon derby this weekend. It is put on my McAvoy Harbor in Bay Point. It is a 2 day tournament but I will only be able to fish it Saturday. $30 entry fee. Last year they paid out $21,000 each day of the derby in prizes. 12K for 1st place alone.
They choose a number between 46 and 72 and that is the target. If more than one entry hits the target I think the names go into a hat and they draw. The only prob is that you have to have a CF # to enter. No shore anglers either. I am headed to DMV to register my yak. It will be like $10. I got Friday off so I can go to the harbor and pay and get the info. I was thinking of headed to Bodega or somewhere Friday afternoon to pump some shrimp as I am sure everywhere will be sold out. There are over 700 boats entering.
I was wondering if anyone might be interested?
One prob is that the fish entered has to be ALIVE without any damage to the head or tail.
I haven't decided where to fish yet. I still have some logistics to go over.
I know it is 40 miles from Buck's the McAvoy. Not sure I could keep a fish alive that long even in a horse trough with water in the back of my truck.
Like I said, I haven't decided where to fish yet in relation to the harbor. I am familiar with Buck's tho. If anyone would be so kind as to PM me with the numbers of the sweet spot I would be grateful ( especially if I come back with some $$$ ) :smt002
If anyone has some suggestions of a hot spot or wants to just go out and fish let me know.
Rain or shine I am fishing for sturgeon Saturday.
