Hookups and Fishing Reports (Viewable by Public) / Re: Catalina island
« on: August 25, 2018, 12:25:22 PM »
I know a guy from my pierfishing board that lives in So-Cal adn goes to Catalina Island over a half-dozen times a year.
He rented one of the kayaks over there once. After that, he bought a high-quality inflatable kayak and takes it over on the ferry when he goes. It fits in a case that meets the requirement as far as luggage limits.  :smt001

How did it go? What was the take like? Kevin, I would have liked to make this but I would have needed your assistance with the yak. I have been yakking for years but I have to be careful when it comes to ripping water like the exposed area of Brothers Island.

Sharky can tell you where to get one. He is from Australia, got bitten surfing, and his sister bought him a shark shield. Only person I have actually met in-person to witness first-hand the damage a GW can do.
He was actually wearing it at ARW. :smt004

ARW vs. Paradise is the question. For me, kayaking, ARW wins.

ARW, flat, easy launch you back your vehicle down to. More protected area (by the rock wall. Halibut easy to locate: straight ahead, to the left, and to the right. You can hit 15, 30, 45’ of water within about 3/4 of a mile from the launch. Halibut heaven, with striper, batray, and leopard shark thrown in.

Personally, I’ve knocked out more halibut off the Pier without even launching my kayak.

This is my personal experience with these two spots since you ask....

General Talk / Re: Rear Ended with Kayak
« on: April 23, 2017, 08:30:21 AM »
Yeah, I hear you! I haven't used mu kayak since I got rid of my pickup and got a new RAV4.  Wayyyy easier to load on a pickup. The materials they use on some of these new cars is cheap! I put a ding the size of a 50cent-piece on the driver's side rear door of my RAV side-loading it (with a pad) and I will never side-load by myself again.
4 little pieces of rope on the PU and no draft and never had to worry about a scratch or it falling off/out or tying the front/back.  New Toy PU's actually cost more than the RAV's... but I will figure. I feel your pain... be happy with what you got (have)  :smt010 :smt005

NCKA,

I hit the ARW with my kayak at 7:00am on 4/20. I fished from 7:00am to 12:00pm and caught two small Halibut by trolling a frozen Herring and flasher. One was caught in front of the north entrance to Ballena Bay. The other was caught about 1/4 mile down the first rock wall in the channel. The water temp was 61-62 degrees. I fished slack high tide to out going tide. The bait is stacked up at ARW and the Halibut bite should continue to improve.

Get out there!

Way to go!  How much lead did you use? And, do you believe trolling is more effective than bait-fishing right now?  :smt006

Gearing Up and Rigging Up / loading kayak from rear of vehicle by self
« on: September 24, 2016, 11:51:03 AM »
Any intel guys?  I am not going to side load my yak on the RAV4 after putting a quarter-sized ding in the side above the rear window.

Any suggestions for rear kayak loading?  Do any of you guys use those suction things that attach to the glass?  Any of you guys make that PVC thingy to guide the kayak over the rear?

Thanks for any info/suggestions!   :smt006

Thanks for the report... :smt006

General Talk / Re: My lowrance sucks
« on: August 16, 2016, 01:16:46 PM »
Take it back and get a different model if you can.  You didn't mention what model you have. Lowrance makes models from their $100 B&W Eagles to FF's $2k.
It's funny, depth and temperature tell me a quite a bit. Certain fish are active at specific temperatures like tuna or black bass . And a change in depth, a drop off is a sure indicator of a place to stop and fish in many areas of the Bay and ocean, as many captains mention in reports what depth fish were biting at.  If you are at places like Santa Cruz or Capitola, you can figure out where fish are sans FF just by going to where the kelp beds are and fish there.
Fish such as halibut cannot be picked up on sonar, but what you can do is chart sandy bottoms and bait schools where they like to hang out.
What I have learnt is many captains come back to the same spots (true by "way points" marked by GPS) on advanced FF or separate GPS units.  Many spots just happen to have physical landmarks that will put you in the general location of a good bite such as: the end of a Rockwall, kelp beds, a big rock in the water such as Red Rock or Rat Rock, a structure such as the Platform or the Pumphouse, a bridge such Benicia Or San Mateo, a pier as in Ozol or Berkeley.
Return the unit, as with any electronics, and get a unit that you understand better as an end-user.
Also, use your own instincts, knowledge, and experience to locate fish on the water in addition to what is says on your graph.
I have seen and been on boats for sturgeon where they have had two top Furuno and Lowrance FF's and it still didn't put fish on deck. Sometimes there are other factors as to when, where, and why the fish are feeding...
