General Talk / Waders for surf fishing
« on: September 12, 2022, 02:11:41 PM »
Recently moved walking distance to Ocean Beach and have been doing some surf fishing (and will be crab snaring come fall).  Been contemplating buying some waders as it seems like every fisherman I see uses them.

I've never worn waders, is it worth it?  Is it more comfortable than a wetsuit?  Easier to clean afterwards?

In the past for surf fishing/crabbing I've always worn a wetsuit with the top half down and surf booties (I also wear this when poke poling).  Always worked just fine for me.

But now that I'll be out there more I'm wondering if it's better to get the wader set up.

Another idea I had was getting some 3mm wetsuit pants with a solid windbreaker jacket.

I know this is super last minute but I have extra pies from my bakery that are left over from the Thanksgiving holiday rush.

I have Apple Streusel, some pumpkin, and assorted small pies.

I'll be here for another hour till 1:30pm if you are in the area and want some pies come by!

General Talk / Kayak SF to Hawaii
« on: May 28, 2021, 11:33:33 AM »
Been following Cyril who will be kayaking from SF to Hawaii and launching at 5am Monday morning from Fort Baker.

Should be interesting to follow.  I followed 2 other people last year who rowed from SF to Hawaii, Lia Ditton was capsized twice during her attempt and she made it back onboard and finished the journey.  Crazy stuff.

Kayak Sailing / Purchasing a used Hobie TI
« on: October 29, 2020, 12:24:23 PM »
I'm in the market for a used Hobie TI and was wondering if there is anything I need to be aware of when purchasing a used one.

I'm knowledgable about standard checks in purchasing a used Hobie pedal kayak as I've had mine for a few years, but wanted to see if there is anything particular about a TI that I should be inspecting for or be careful about.

Maybe common stress points on the mast/sail/amas/etc?

Also can you transport a TI upside down on a roof rack?  It seems like most pictures online I see are people who are using cradles and it's right side up and was wondering if there is an issue with just putting it upside down on the racks (with padding).

Thanks

Recipes / Canning anchovies
« on: September 02, 2020, 10:29:00 AM »
Has anyone canned anchovies?

I'm thinking of lightly smoking then canning.  Trying to mimic a can of sardines/herring.

My main concern is if they will hold up.  Worried they will get too mushy.

Places to Launch and Camp / Turney Street Boat Ramp
« on: May 18, 2020, 04:27:12 PM »
Anyone ever launch here?  I was talking to a boater in the ARW parking lot who said some people were launching here and doing well with halibut.

Looks like parking is the tough part although you can park on Bridgeway right in front of the ramp just have to pay meter and be out by noon which sounds doable.

It's used in good condition, looking to trade for a similar rod but 2 piece.

I'm in SF/Marin.

Hobie Kayaks / Humminbird Transducer in Revo 13
« on: August 13, 2018, 04:39:05 PM »
I'd like to use my Humminbird fish finder with my Revo.

I see the following part

https://www.austinkayak.com/products/12197/Hobie-Pro-Angler-Fishfinder-Adapter-Kit-for-Humminbird.html?last=

My question is can I use the transducer that came with the fish finder or do I need a different one?

General Fishing Tips / Keeping bait fish alive overnight
« on: April 16, 2018, 09:03:23 PM »
After skunking out on baitfish my last outing I'm looking at going to my local pier and getting bait fish the night before.

Any tips on keeping bait fish alive overnight?

I was looking at something like this:

https://www.amazon.com/Marine-Metal-110-volt-Bubbles-Pump/dp/B000EYUE6W/ref=lp_5686070011_1_7?srs=5686070011&ie=UTF8&qid=1523937700&sr=8-7

Basically this in a 5 gallon bucket outside.  Will the water get too warm?

Went out to Baker Beach.  Shore break was larger than day before which was surprising as swell was marked as lower.

Not too bad though.  Tried a new method of landing at Baker....once I got near the shore break I paddled backwards watching the waves waiting for a lull and then hopped off when chest deep or shallower and walked the kayak in.  I've had some sneaker waves hit me pretty hard here so was trying to avoid flipping.

I've been trying out Promar Ambush nets with pretty good success.  Much easier to paddle with than a metal cage.

Kept 2 Dungeness and 1 rock crab.  All legal Dungeness were female (I threw a few other legal females back that I had caught as I was hoping for males).

Maybe someone can help me figure this out, I'm really not understanding how the tides and current do not match.

I was out there on a incoming tide (11am and high-tide was 1pm) and current was being swept out to sea.  Shouldn't I have been pushed towards the bay on an incoming?

I've had this in Tomales where an hour after low tide the current was still being pulled out to sea.

Does this have to do with the ebb tide?

Anyone ever fish the man made tower out there for rock fish?  Was thinking of going there when season opens.

Gearing Up and Rigging Up / Trident 13 Ice Box
« on: November 01, 2017, 12:43:02 PM »
I have a 2012 Trident 13.

http://www.cabelas.com/product/OLD-TOWN-TRIDENT-PREDATOR-ICE-STORAGE-BOX/2455323.uts?productVariantId=4975823&WT.tsrc=PPC&WT.mc_id=GoogleProductAds&WT.z_mc_id1=04671078&rid=20&gclid=EAIaIQobChMIpM_umoue1wIV0LjACh08awjHEAQYASABEgJCivD_BwE&gclsrc=aw.ds

Would this ice box fit my kayak?  I can't seem to find anything about it fitting different years.

Also, has anyone used these before? I would primarily use this as fish storage once caught.

Introductions / Hello from a shore fisherman
« on: June 02, 2016, 09:53:38 AM »
Hi,

I'm an SF native who has shore been fishing in the bay area for the past 10 years.  My main spots are around SF: Fort Point, Ocean Beach, Baker Beach, Crissy Fields.

Looking to get a kayak soon as I finally have some space to store it.

Looking forwards to learning as much as I can!

Thanks
