In golf, I think they call that a "gimme".  Plan well executed buddy!

Super sad to hear this news. He helped me enormously in giving advice when I was setting up my downrigger for. Y Revo 16 a few years back.

I went out yesterday. Tide was right, color was right, temp was right, bait concentration was right, fishing was right, catching was all wrong. Spoke to everyone fishing out there, sizable fleet. 1 fish taken (not me) for all the boats around me. Gonna be awhile. No party boats, and really that says it all.

Thanks for your report. It's all going to go off really late this year with all the cold muddy water coming down the delta from the big snow.

General Fishing Tips / Re: Kayak Crabbing with a 3 y/o

I worried like crazy taking my kids out when they were less than 5...on my 22 foot sport boat I had already had and operated for 10 yrs. No way, no place, no how would I put a 3 yr old at risk in a kayak. Can they swim a mile to shore solo?

This has been happening forever. Believe it or not things are much better now than they used to be.  Sewage treatment plant overflows happen on the bay nearly every year.

Gearing Up and Rigging Up / Re: BAITSHARK Kayak Bait Bucket?
« on: December 31, 2022, 12:41:30 PM »
I use the frabil and keep it in the water while I'm drifting or moving slow (TONS of drag). If I'm in transport and need to make tracks I pick it up and store it aft. I've rigged a long air hose taped to it's rope with an air stone inside, and an air bubbler clipped onto the back of my seat. Keeps the bait frisky when I'm moving. Used that system all last year's works great.  I'd take a picture, but it's dumping outside!

General Talk / Happy New Year!
« on: December 31, 2022, 08:03:50 AM »
On the eve of 2023, I'd like to wish you all a Happy New Year!   This being the second year of retirement for me, I was able to get my kayak groove on pretty well and had the best fishing year of my life...and I've been at it for a while!  112 days on the water chasing salmon, halibut, crabs, rockfish and a few others.  I learned so much this year, much of that from the posse of guys I got to spend a lot of time on the water with that I met here. I did not get my December halibut that I was trying for, but January still awaits as the ONLY month I have not taken a halibut ever from the bay!!

Cheers!

General Fishing Tips / Re: Ambush nets on kayak?
« on: December 27, 2022, 09:38:23 AM »
I've been playing with different combinations now for 2 seasons.  Flats stack better on the yak, but Conicals hold crab better.  I now use 3 flats and 3 Conicals and that combo is working well. I cycle the flats every 20 mins and use them to prospect, while I let the Conicals sit longer. Hope that helps.

General Talk / Re: Geeking out on Fish Count Spreadsheets
« on: December 22, 2022, 04:08:33 PM »
As a fellow "numbers guy" I love the spreadsheet!!   That's on my to-do list for 2023 as well. I'm going to start tracking the correlation between tides and fish counts as well,. particularly for halibut and salmon.

General Fishing Tips / Re: Organizing crab pot/ring floats and ropes
« on: December 18, 2022, 02:49:31 PM »
The regulation for floats are ONLY related to "traps", not hoops (conical other flat hoops).  You can inflate a condom as far as DFW cares with your hoops .

Sadly DFG is in the business of writing citations, not intelligently enforcing the law. Why monitor infractions by sending out two wardens in a vessel when you can put one warden at the ramp for a fraction of the cost? Asshats will poach crab gear no matter what you drop in the water.

General Talk / Re: Dummies Guide to Crabbing
« on: December 05, 2022, 06:43:42 PM »
I ALWAYS used jars and either cage or bag. Chopped squid and oily small baits go in the jars. On my kayak I take carcass hunks, chopped chicken chunks and bigger herring or sardines and put them in the bag. The jar gets placed Inside the bag to simplify things and a single brass clasp hoops the whole rig onto the center of my hoops and cones. I prep all the baits in advance and then just clip them in on the drop.
