CA Regulations / Sac. River salmon season closure
« on: November 03, 2019, 01:30:28 PM »
I am having difficulty deciphering the salmon regulations for the Sacramento River in Sacramento County.  Is it currently open? If so when does it close? Are there any other restrictions? ( barbless, artificial lures, etc)
Maybe I’m mentally challenged, but the regs appear to put this section in the valley anadromous waters section, which says closed to the takings of salmon
Thank you

Welcome to the forum. There is not a perfect kayak for all waters. A boat that tracks well on the open ocean is not ideal for fishing small creeks. You either compromise, or get more boats! :smt001

Welcome !

We were bored, so Big Jim and I went to see what McLure was like on Saturday. I wanted to see the headwaters where the Merced river comes in so we tried Horseshoe bend. The sign at the entrance said no boat launching due to low water, but I figured I could find enough water to launch a kayak. When I could drive  no further it was still aways to the water, so we went back to Barrets cove. Big jim is recovering from back surgery, so I left him sitting on the dock and I paddeled up towards the house boats pulling a needle fish and a crockodile. I figured one would run deep and one would run shallow and I'd adjust by what produced fish.
By the time I got to the no wake buoys by the house boats I started catching fish. I didn't go too far, maybe to the 2nd cement trestle on the old railroad grade before turning around. The wind had been to my back going up and I was concerned I might be in for a workout on the way back.
After the third fish I reeled in on the Needlefish, my line was so twisted I couldnt get it back out, (guess I need better swivels),so I removed about 20 feet of line and went to retie. I couldn't find the lure,so I reached into my box and pulled out a Lil' Cleo spoon. It didn't seem to matter, it caught just as many fish.
As I rounded the point by the houseboats I hooked  up on both rods. I guess its not a good idea to troll two lines when its that good! I fished from about noon till 2:45. I caught and released 11 fish. Nothing real big,but I finally got the no fish catching stink off my boat.
Big Jim got nothing off the dock.....
