Hookups and Fishing Reports (Viewable by Public) / Re: Clear Lake 1/27 RPT
« on: February 27, 2024, 05:39:36 PM »
Do you have to get a lake county mussel sticker for the yak?

As long as you are not powered in your kayak you do not need the mussel sticker.

Does “powered” include sail?

Monterey (once rockfish season opens).

Craigslist may be more productive this time of year unless it’s a super deal on a very desirable item. Folks tend to hunker down a bit in winter

Not so sure about that, as I’ve had better luck (both buying and selling) here than on Craigslist.

And another one for the same price that includes a few extras (boat might be a little older, though):

May be a good price, if it doesn't have any serious problems:

Hobie Kayaks / Re: Well. My 2022 Outback Hull cracked.
« on: February 25, 2024, 06:09:34 PM »
Hobie was very good about my warranty claim (hull replacement), although that was quite a while ago. In any case, my impression is that they'll generally still do the right thing, but you might have to push harder than in the past.

Kayak Sailing / Re: Anyone sew sail before?
« on: February 22, 2024, 07:42:47 PM »
I have not done any sail sewing myself but like AlsHobie, I've watched lots of sailing videos, and they often need to do repairs. Sailrite sells a repair kit, and that might be worth considering:

https://www.sailrite.com/sailmaking

I'm sure it would be slow going, but it would probably work.

Another option would be to have Ullman Sails in Santa Cruz do the repair:

https://ullmansails.com/location/ullman-sails-san-francisco-and-monterey-bay/

Quite a while ago, I had Ullman do a mod to one of my AI sails, and I can't recall exactly what they charged, but I remember thinking that it was a lot less than I expected.

If you do manage to repair the sail (or if you've done so already), I'd be interested to know how you did it. Mr. X gave me an AI spinnaker that has a small tear, and I want to fix it before this summer...

Some outage stats since I'm a data nerd and have nearly everything here instrumented to emit metrics:

Total outage cost: $176

Propane cost: $162
Oil life: $14
Maintenance/parts: $15

Per kWh cost: $1.88

Peak generator load: 15%
Average generator load: 5%

That's impressive. You made me realize that I'm a poor excuse for a nerd...

General Fishing Tips / Re: Fishing in the Rain?

We went out for a drive Saturday morning to Tracy area to check out the blossoms. They are about another week for peak bloom, but there were a few early bloomers. Simply amazing, we truly are blessed! If this was in Japan or China, there would be thousands of visitors. Here in CA, it was only us. I couldn't even get my teenage sons to get out of the car.  :smt009

Funny you should mention this, as my wife is going to Japan in a few weeks to see the cherry blossoms...

4 days, 6 hours, 6 minutes, 39 seconds and 52.38 gallons of propane later... we have grid power again!  Looks like another storm coming next week... just in time to do it all over again.

We got our grid power back yesterday, in slightly less that 3 days.

It's time to refill the propane tanks and to stock up on pellets...

This was my solution a few years back, it worked great. Used large diameter PVC wrapped with camping pad.

That's NCKA ingenuity at its finest.

It's now "4:00pm tomorrow", which is when PG&E said that we'd have electricity, but now they just updated it to 2 days from now (Thursday) by 10:00pm. That's quite a miss, even by PG&E standards...

PGE says our ETE (estimated time for electricity) is 4:00pm tomorrow, so we must have higher priority than Boulder Creek.

I love the part on the PGE website where they list the cause of our outage:

“Our preliminary determination is that your outage was caused by the weather.”

We've been on generator since about 9:30 this morning.  I expect we'll be on generator into Tuesday based on how things are looking.  Winds are just starting to really pick up.  They're mostly out of the ESE and we have a nice lee from SE winds, but we're still seeing 33 mph gusts on the weather station.

Power is out now, and our standby Briggs & Stratton generator is working like a champ, as it has without fail since I installed it in 2009 (well, a couple of parts have been replaced over the years...).

So far, it's still a south (maybe south-south east) wind, and hoping it stays that way. The more easterly, the more nerve-wracking, as there are some very large trees in that direction, including one humongous dead leaner. Fortunately for us, that dead one seems to be out of range for our house--it is, however, directly aimed at a vacant house...

Watch out for falling branches or trees!

We're lucky, since we're protected from wind out of the south. Regardless, I'm surprised that our electricity is still on...
