General Talk / Bodega Bay salmon?
« on: March 22, 2005, 03:56:11 PM »
I'm glad to see this topic come up as I've had a few questions about it myself.  Speaking of questions, has anyone kayak fished for salmon out of Bodega Bay?  I haven't tried for salmon yet but are large recreational and commercial fisheries for salmon up here.  Every now and then last summer I would see the salmon boats trolling fairly close to shore from the Marine Lab where I work.

General Talk / Single-use digital cameras
« on: March 22, 2005, 03:29:34 PM »
A friend of mine showed me a new 2 mp digital camera he picked up for about $15 at a drug store in Florida.  Evidently, the idea is that they are single use cameras and you are basically paying for a use rental and development of about 25 prints and a CD.  These cameras have a flash, single focus auto exposure and a small lcd screen on the back to review your last photo.  The trick is that you have to return the camera to the store to get developed as there aren't any USB cables or removable media to speak of (or so it seems).

Here's an image of the camera

I did a search and managed to find some of these cameras for sale online at Ritzcamera.com.
http://www.ritzcamera.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?storeId=10001&catalogId=10001&langId=-1&productId=13164501&bct=t1003%3Bc1012

The idea of having a digital camera that I can afford to get wet is appealing, but what really excited me is evidently there is a group of hackers that have figured out how to download the pictures to their own PCs and reset the camera for more use.   Just think the ease of mind you get while using a cheap disposable camera on your kayak with the ease of posting you get by using your digital camera.

Here's one of many pages on the web on how to bust into these cameras, add a USB connection and download the photos.

I haven't done this myself (yet), but for under $20 I may give it a try.  If anyone out there is savy with a soldering gun they may want to check it out.

At some point we became convinced that the 3" Salt & Pepper Silver Phantom Bass Assassin Shads were the hot bait (see below).  I think that decision was based on the fact that we had a lot of them and they produced the first night out.  Later in the trip when we ran out of the bass assassins we found out that other plastics worked just as well.

Actually, the stringer of bass that I kept to eat in my report were all caught on a 1" crappie jig which I switched to after catching a nice crappie on the bass assassin.

Evidently I couldn't link to ofoto.com images.  Anyway, I signed up for a myfishingpics.com account and I've fixed the images in my original post.

After reading everybody else's reports I thought I should give one of my own.  I would have done it sooner, but I wasn't sure I could pull down photos from Ofoto or not.

Anyway, I went out to Lake Sonoma to do some kayak-in camping and fishing with some friends from work last weekend.  The weather was amazing and the fishing was pretty good.   Lake Sonoma is a fairly young resevoir (~22 yrs old) and they've left a lot of flooded trees standing in the upper reaches.

They (the Army Corp of Engineers) have many designated boat-in only campsites.  We all decided that the "Skunk Creek" campsites looked the fishest on the topomap, if only because it was the farthest (~3 mi) from the boat launch.  Here's a couple photos of the campsite.

The fishing was pretty good.  The bass have begun to move into the shallows and were hitting soft plastics on the surface.

I tend to practice catch-and-release fishing, but when it comes to camping my survivor instincts kick in so we kept enough to eat during the trip.

I think the four of us brought to the boat a total of 40+ largemouth bass and one crappie in two mornings and one evening of fishing.  Most of the bass were in the 14-15" range and we had a few in the 16-19" range, nothing huge but I was using my ultra-light and had a blast.

Oh, the first morning we got up early and on the water by 6am.  Fifteen minutes later I hear this rumbling noise and this line of about 15 bass boats  was slowly making its way towards me.  Luckily we were in a no-wake zone.  Anyway, I was fishing a nice point with structure and one boat pulls up beside me about 20 yds to my right and another 20 yds to my left.  Evidently there was a bass tourney that day and common courtesy isn't part of there clubs by-laws.

Kayaks / Ocean Kayak Caper
« on: March 01, 2005, 04:05:09 PM »
Hey Kfish,

I've been fishing out of my Caper since late last summer, primarily in the Bodega Bay region of Sonoma County.   I'm not sure, but as far as I can tell I'm the only one with a Caper on this forum.

So far I haven't ventured more than a 1/2 mile from shore.  However, nearshore and within Bodega Bay, Tomales Bay, and several local lakes, it's been a great little fishing kayak.  Later this spring if conditions are right, I may test it a bit farther from shore for Salmon.

Pros:

low price, very stable, maneuverable, wide seat, light weight, plenty of room (I'm 6'1"), has a decent front hatch ( I can easily store 2   7.5 ft rods  below deck when launching through the surf).

Cons:
not very fast, doesn't track as well as the larger kayaks, has a fairly small back tank well

General Talk / Looking for a good tide website
« on: February 22, 2005, 06:10:04 PM »
If anyone has a palm pilot, there is great little program that uses that same basic code as the perviously mentioned website.  It's called Tide Tool and can be found on the following website.

http://www.toolworks.com/bilofsky/tidetool/

Not that I'm suggesting you go out on your kayak with your palm pilot, but if you happen to use one on a regular basis, this program is worth having.

Did I mention it's free?

Hookups and Fishing Reports (Viewable by Public) / fish names
« on: February 09, 2005, 10:33:23 PM »
Hi all,

This will be my first post to this site, but as a marine biologist I thought this might  be a good time to chime in.  Common names are notoriously difficult to pin down.  The American Fisheries Society (AFS) has attempted to standardize such names, but who other than scientists actually use that list.

For example, did you know that in Maryland, striped bass are called "Rockfish", go figure.  And don't get me started on "snapper".

Anyway, officially, the fish posted are Embiotoca lateralis or the
Striped Seaperch (evidently even the name surfperch has changed).

The Rainbow Seaperch is a different species Hypsurus caryi.

For those of you into fish, a great website for fish information such as common names, ecology and even images is http://www.fishbase.org.

As for me, I'm a visiting researcher at the Bodega Marine Lab who has recently gotten back into kayak fishing.  Unfortuneatly, I didn't get me new kayak until that last two weeks of rockfish season so I'm dying to find off season fishing opportunities.  If I find something to fish this winter on the Sonoma Coast I'll be sure to post a report.
