General Talk / New leg, snake, pigs...
« on: August 24, 2014, 09:30:37 AM »
I've been getting around for over 8 months on a prosthetic leg that doesn't have any weight resistance in the knee, so imagine my joy in getting a new limb. Yay, I can safely walk down hills and stairs again.
I had to go to San Mateo to get calibrated to the new knee and so on the drive back I wanted to put it through its paces and stopped off at Lake Sonoma for hiking and an overnight stay.
The marina campground has been fixed up, gravel road and the steep hill has been paved. As for Liberty Glen, it is no longer a first/come first/serve campground. To stay there you need to make reservations two days in advance. No day-use either, they won't let you park down by the kiosk. Regardless of camping, to park anywhere it costs you $3.
I cursed the system, paid my fee and parked at No Name lot. I walked the Boar Scat loop and was taking in the scenery where you can look west from the wooden bench. I'd been standing for a couple of seconds cooling off in the shade when I notice a rattler almost right next to me. It never coiled and rattled. It finally noticed me taking pics and leisurely slithered off the trail and into the grass.
I spent the night at Gray Pine. In the morning I parked near the archery range, buttered up, and walked west towards Liberty Glen. It was a beautiful foggy morning. I saw lots of deer, including two solid bucks up close that scared the crap out of me.
The biggest wallows are down to one pig at a time usage, and they're being used. Down at the creek bottom where you start to walk up towards the knob I start to see lots of pig tracks in the dust. I walk to the group camps for water and then down to Corona Bottle for a gander. That's as far as I go and turn around. Group camps were very full but quiet.
I was on the Rockpile side of the creek bottom looking west towards the lower knob when I saw the pigs, at least a dozen of them, about 80 yrds out. Big ones, small ones, one very big saggy sow in the rear. The most striking one was a big white one with uniform black spreckles. A bloody red spot would show up well on that one!
After that the fog burned off, I hiked out and went home.
As for the new knee, it rocks. I felt like a bird whose wings had finally healed.

General Fishing Tips / 1 oz torpedos

Can someone bring me 10 or so of these  to Albion? I can't find them anywhere near me. I know the ProShop in Rohnert Park has them but I can't make it down there. They have an eye at each end.

Fish Talk / ID this little guy?
« on: July 06, 2014, 12:07:46 PM »
Last two trips to Van Damme I have seen many of these, especially yesterday. They were thick on the meter. So thick in fact that I was snagging them while fishing for the rockies. Fish were spitting them up too.
Do salmon eat/target these?

General Talk / Damn mouse
« on: June 30, 2014, 06:58:31 AM »
I guess it's a mouse living in my truck. Every morning for the last couple of days I find a little pile of chewed up stuff. It's chewing plastic. Arrrrggghh!!!
Any advice? I'm starting by pulling everything out, except the driver's seat.

Going from the main ramp at the dam. Looking for rainbows and smallies on the ultralight troll.
Everything is open except for camping. I'll register for the pig hunts if they're open for that too, which I hear that they are.
I'm starting to shoot my bow...

I'm thinking of hitting it Sat and Sun, mostly for the steelies and/or anything else. I look forward to camping/chillin' and a walk or two as well. I'm also bringing my slingshot as I'm a kid at heart and love to kill beer cans!

Saturday's conditions are looking pretty good. I'm looking at a quick day trip to stock up on some cod fillets and have some OTW fun. I've never done too good straight out of Noyo so I might do Russian Gulch or Van Damme.
I heard of salmon nearshore hitting surf smelt but it's not %100 reliable. I'd like something more substantial to go on before paddling my arms off for nothing.
I'll try to confirm Friday night.

Gearing Up and Rigging Up / Ghetto downrigger
« on: July 24, 2013, 04:54:44 PM »
There were some questions and interest in my home-made d'rigger. Here she is.
I used the 2-speed reel because it's the only reel I had available for the job. An old Penn would have served just as well, though the low gear on the 2-speed was nice when reeling up the 2.5 lb ball.
I placed drops of hot-glue on the inside of the pulley housing to keep the #50 mono from sliding in between the housing and the wheel. It worked well. The large split-ring holding the swivel and pulley was just slid down the tapered rod shaft and stopped when it got tight, in just the right place! The tape just helped it from slipping around too much.
I slide the but end under one of my legs and the whole thing stays in place. I tether it as well.

I didn't get enough and have to go again. The weather looks great (no wind!) and I plan on arriving sometime Saturday and staying at Doran if there's a spot, someplace else otherwise, and go out in the morning.
I'm sure to see other kayakers even w/o posting a hookup. Sweet.

I finally ran out of them and can't find anymore. Anyone see them in their neck of the woods?
They are 1 oz withand eye at each end.

This coming Saturday is a full moon that is the closest to Earth for the year. It's supposed to be very bright and big. I'm thinking of camping/chillin'/hiking at Liberty G. and maybe some fishing thrown in if I have the time and gumption.
Any of the usual suspects interested? I miss that place.
Contigo, it means container.

Gearing Up and Rigging Up / Scupper holes
« on: June 17, 2013, 05:43:51 PM »
I need to plug some scupper holes that are not perfectly round. I need some foam that will expand into the hole, but haven't found the "right stuff." Any ideas?
