Welcome, Dr. CnCC.

What field is your PhD?

I think the ones that get away keep us coming back more than the ones we catch.

... I havent caught one in like 3 years.

Ditto that.

Says launches are allowed at the West end of the beach and at life guards discretion.

That's good to know. So, launch early before any lifeguards are present and hope that they don't use their discretion to prevent you from landing...

I launched from Mitchell’s Cove once. That was one of only 2 times that I have been able to con my older son into hauling my kayak to the launch site—the other time, I launched at 4 mile beach and landed at the harbor. As FT says, the stairs at Mitchell’s Cove are no joke.

Really tying rigs on the water for me = sea sickness unless they are quick.

This! I only tie palomar knots on the water…

... I believe it's not 'legal' to launch kayaks from cowell's beach.  I think you'd probly get away with it if you tried, but years past that was the word.

I've heard that too, but this official-looking site claims it is a "kayak access point"...

Put a mirage drive (or 2) on that, and you'd have a unique fishing vessel...

My cooler is only 23" long, as that's the longest that will fit in the rear of my AI (the rear crossbar takes up some space behind the seat).

I was able to get the lid closed (just barely) with the 2 salmon in the picture (the bigger one is over 36"). The 30" halibut in the other picture fit too (it's on top of the 10 frozen water bottles that I carry, just for the picture, so it actually fit easily). A really big halibut (over 40") might be impossible to cram into the cooler, but just about anything else I'll ever catch (and keep) will fit.

I plan to drop straight out of the harbor and slowly make the pilgrimage out towards SC3, then over to the mile buoy depending on how things go. Unloading gear at 630a at the west harbor. Would be great to fish with company!

I fished the west side today. The weather was great (except not enough wind for the AI), but fishing was super slow. At the dock, I did hear that some halibut were caught in Capitola.

These LiFePO4 batteries are great:

They are not quite as light as lithium ion, but way lighter than SLA. I've had one forever, and it's fabulous.

Plus they are less likely to catch fire. They also can also be completely discharged without damage.

And one other nice thing is that they don’t take long to charge.

We do not discriminate based on age, sex, national origin, or fishing ability. Well, maybe a little bit based on fishing ability…
