I was looking for a thicker than 3mm neoprene farmers John myself. Couldn’t find any at the time. Decided to get a neoprene top (also from NRS) which I like very much since I can take it off if I’m too hot.
But feet were still cold. Especially when wading for too long waiting for the sets. I ended up getting dry pants to go over the wetsuit. It works very well. The only thing I haven’t tested is how much water the pants would get if I’m immersed (since the pants aren’t combined with a dry jacket). But so far this hasn’t been an issue. Plus, I usually take off the dry pants after launching.

I lived in Victoria and know Vancouver Island pretty well. Rock climbed the Squamish area too. I don’t have specific recommendations, but you’re going to have a lot of fun anywhere you go. There’s amazing fishing on the west side of Vancouver Island (Nootka sound). If you’re on salt, in the straight, keep in mind the tides can be dangerous.

I’ve been out of the loop so sorry if this question is out of sync.
I know that the 20 fathom limitation is much better than 50 fathom, but still that’s 120FOW. Most of the rock fishing we do is around 30-90 max. For folks like me (bay area) it means a lot of driving (and paddling) to get to legal fishing depths.

What am I missing?

Good advice from everyone.
I would add a few things:
- get minimal gear, make sure it’s secure. This will give you peace of mind in case you flip, which is actually good, since it’s part of training
- go with someone if possible, or to a beach with people. There’s safety in numbers
- bays are good, except for The Bay, which is not a beginner place if tides and other things go wrong
- do your safety research. The number one cause of deaths is hypothermia. There’s no replacement for prep

And after a few outings remember that good seas don’t make good sailors.

Dont do it, use something like Thule Outrigger or Rhino Rack Universal Load Assist. I used to do exactly that with my Revo 16 with suction cup device ...... you want something that wont fail ....... just take my word for it. The problem with the Revo 16 is that it is so damn long ..... but when you glide in the water, you forget all the loading issues

A friend told me he uses the same trick as Alex, except with a piece of old carpet on the spoiler to protect it, and allow the kayak to slide better. No T-bar. But he has a Highlander, and Honda is known to have a lighter build compared to Toyota, so I’ll have to see.

But yeah - that’s the most solid design.

As for the Codinter, I had one in the past, and indeed the kayak either gets out of alignment or the suction cups come off. But both can be avoided with practice and a clean surface

I want to take my Revo 16 on my Honda Odyssey, and need advice on how to load it.
I’m worried that if I lean the kayak on the plastic spoiler at the top of the tailgate, then the spoiler will break.

Another thing is that when the tailgate opens, it’ll probably hit the kayak. Not sure if there’s anything that can be done about that. Just be careful not to open it when the kayak is on.
