General Talk / Drug smugglers use fishing kayaks to hide 183 kilos of meth
« on: February 18, 2014, 06:51:15 AM »

Drug smugglers use fishing kayaks to hide 183 kilos of meth.

"Australian police seized about $162 million worth of methamphetamine hidden inside kayaks shipped from China, officials said Wednesday," said an article on MSN.com.

"Five people were arrested in Sydney on Tuesday after customs officials discovered 183 kilograms of meth last week while inspecting a shipment of kayaks from China, the Australian Federal Police said.

Nineteen of 27 kayaks in the shipment had bags of meth stuffed inside the watertight areas of the boats, said Tim Fitzgerald, regional director for the Australian Customs and Border Protection Service.

Four of the five people arrested are from Taiwan, and one is from Sydney. Two were charged with attempting to import drugs, and the others were charged with possessing a commercial quantity of drugs. They each face a maximum of life in prison if convicted.

Australian officials have made a series of major drug busts in recent months. In October, police seized about AU$200 million worth of meth hidden in the tires of a truck shipped from China."

Fish Talk / New word record - Redear
« on: February 17, 2014, 05:07:40 PM »
By: Kellen » February 17th, 2014, 1:31 pm

Lake Havasu does it again, it looks like the redear sunfish world record was broken again there yesterday with a 5.8 pounder.

The previous record was set on May 2nd, 2011 and weighed 5.55 pounds, also at Havasu.

Again, the quaggas are good for something. Feeding giant redears.

More big Havasu redears that show the evolution in size;

4 pound 13 ouncer caught in June of 2012

The 5.55 pounder caught in May of 2011 that has stood as the world record for the last few year

And then here is a pic of a redear Mike Phua caught while practicing for an FLW Bass tournament last March at Havasu. He said it weighed 5.7-5.9 pounds on the handheld scale in the boat. But I don't think they ever got it on the right scale for consideration for any records at the time.

Havasu is the redear capital of the world right now. We might see a 6 pounder this spring.

General Talk / Who would you fish with?
« on: January 22, 2014, 01:02:27 PM »
Ron Swanson vs. Dwight Schrute.

They may be fictional characters, but that doesn’t make the decision any less important. Which one would you rather spend the day kayak fishing with, Ron Swanson or Dwight Schrute? The first is a moustached, Parks Deparment Director; the second is a paper salesman and beet farmer. Both are prepared to survive any situation, from ex-wives to Scranton Stranglers. But how do they stack up as fisherman?

Ron Swanson

Swanson is the type of man’s man who builds his own canoe AND paddle before he goes out fishing. He would catch a fish before you even put a line in the water and then question your masculinity. He would critique your improper casting skills, but it would make you a better fisherman. You could even pick up moustache growing advice at the same time.

Swanson would also pack plenty of food for the both of you - all of it red meat. Since Swanson doesn’t eat fish, “For sport only, fish meat is practically a vegetable" you'd get to keep the catch.

Dwight Schrute

Schrute is known for his knowledge in martial arts, beet farming, Battlestar Galactica and bears. He has a rather large collection of knives, swords and other interesting weapons "strategically placed" throughout the office at Dunder Mifflin Paper Company. He can build a fire and feed himself in the woods without breaking a sweat. He probably learned how to fish while still in diapers while listening to German nursery rhymes.

If you brought Schrute along and he liked you, he would tie your knots for you, help you land that trophy and take the blame if you lost a fish. Unless, of course, you're like Jim, in which case, he would throw your rod in the water, dump out your fishing lures and punch a hole in your kayak to teach you disaster preparedness.
