Thanks for the write up. Been getting skunked the last few weeks but putting in the hours. Hoping our luck turns around soon.

Did you sell these fins? I'm interested and live in Sonoma Coast.

General Talk / Re: USGS Hi-Res Underwater Topos

Wow wicked cool! I've been studying inshore charts but resolution is limited.

My buddies tell me about several "buckets" that are worth checking out but since I don't have a fancy gps I don't really find them. I imagine in ArcGIS I could probably find a couple coordinates and enter them into my Garmin.

Tedski I'm curious what you have in mind as far as interactive maps. I usually do plant stuff and have used ArcCollector remotely but think it would be rad to merge my appreciation for fish and underwater habitat with mapping tools. Guess one limitation is the that touch screens on a kayak would be annoying.

Despite swales and rocky reef any other thoughts? Any knowledge of sat imagery use in determining aquatic vegetation? Fun stuff!

I wasn't thinking something you'd use on the water, but that's also a good idea!  I was looking at the raw gis data and it lacks the colorized, so I was thinking of a way to colorize on an interactive (scrollable, zoomable) map.

Tedski, haven't thought about implementing, but I'm imagining one thing that I could do is create layers of cool features from the raw data, and upload to arcGIS online and save an offline map, so I can have real time location on the water. I'm going to take a look at the raw data on my work machine.. very interesting to me.

Thanks for sharing! Here's another tool I frequently use (similar to Navionics). In addition to depth, it also gives you the makeup of the ocean floor.

Wow that is so cool. Thanks for sharing! Wish we could input this onto a GPS device and scroll in and out OTW.

General Talk / Re: Line snapping
« on: September 29, 2020, 07:01:03 AM »
Hey loebs,

Sorry to hear about the fish you lost. Definitely invest on leashes or get a some of those snaps and crimp them onto paracord so you can attach rods, stringers, etc. https://www.westmarine.com/buy/scotty--trolling-snaps--434285 (prob other place than west marine but u get the idea)

So it's not clear where they snapped but usually the pre-tied rigs work just fine. It's good to have a more elastic leader (such as mono) if you are using braid.

Is your snap and swivel on par with the line you are using? That is often an area overlooked and first to fail.

Also a lot going on here but halibut do have sharp teeth! Wire crimped onto mono is an option but not that common inshore.

General Talk / Re: Crazy-talk! Thinking about buying a cargo van.

Hell yeah! I got a 2007 Ford E350 superduty and I built it out for camping. The way I designed it I can fit my 13 ft prowler into the center and when I want to camp I pull the kayak out, insert a board and I have a bed. I can take pictures tomorrow if you’re interested.

Great engine with plenty of power and I take it all over.

Thank you all for the greetings!

Welcome Luis :smt006
I used to live there too!
It's the best time of year there right now!
Enjoy :smt004

Naoaki, it is an awesome time of year! I am already enjoying a lot more windows to be out on the water (although we do have a nice storm this weekend). Small community out here. Were you working in Bodega too?

Welcome Luis. I am also in Santa Rosa. Would like to link up sometime.  :smt006

Lets do it Elvin! Conditions look a little rough out here, but still hoping to do a little fishing in the bay as the season winds down. Always down to go a little north too.

Recipes / Re: Salmon bones for soup?
« on: September 22, 2020, 10:25:20 PM »
I give my carcasses to a lady i met who uses them to make fish stock for her chickens. She says it helps their eggs shells get thicker from the nutrients and calcium.  The chickens like it and I get to hunt turkeys on her ranch so it works out.
Brilliant! I was wondering what to do with the suspicious stock. My chickens absolutely destroyed the bones after I cooked it down. Great tip!

So, maybe you already know this but salmon is a fatty fish and I was told that it can turn rancid quickly. I actually got sick from week old stock (head and carcass) about a week or two ago. Really light headed and hot and cold.. It was kinda spooky but felt fine the following day.

Tasted good tho..

General Fishing Tips / Re: Tides for halibut fishing
« on: September 18, 2020, 09:24:35 PM »
Wow great discussion in that article and now it seems like a no brainer.. so other than clams and intertidal foraging, is there anything that would be really good to fish during these strong tides?

General Fishing Tips / Re: Gutting at sea?
« on: September 18, 2020, 09:13:25 PM »
That’s an interesting idea and I used to filet on small boats.. never done it on the yak.

I like the idea of returning what you won’t use to the system, but would have to be done carefully to keep it from coming ashore. I also wouldn’t do it in a small cove with still water.

[/quote]
On a calm day it might even be practical to do some filleting out on the water, but this is generally a no-no because the Department of Fish and Wildlife needs to be able to identify and measure what you caught.

Here is more info on the rule from the previous comment, 27.65. Filleting of Fish on Vessels
See the following- https://wildlife.ca.gov/Fishing/Ocean/Regulations/Sport-Fishing/General-Ocean-Fishing-Regs

Happy foraging!

Welcome aboard Luis. I think Kirk Lombard of the intertidal? does/did that kinda stuff: https://www.seaforager.com/about-kirk

His book is awesome too

Thanks guys! I’m stoked to be a on the forum. I’m a big fan of his book but had no idea. Now that I know this I definitely need to go on one of his foraging trips and meet him in person.

Hi Tim!

I grew up fishing in warmer waters too and although I miss it, not sure I could go back. My brother used to work at crystal pier growing up. Those were some fun days.

Take care and hope to run into you!

Luis

Introductions / Saludos from Bodega
« on: September 18, 2020, 09:17:43 AM »
Hi yall,

I'm a new member living in Bodega. I've been kayak fishing from an older blue OK Prowler for about 5 years now. Recently lived in Big Sur, but I'll be in the Sonoma Coast for the next few years. I'm originally from San Diego (where I did quite a bit of kayak and pier fishing) and owned a couple small recreational vessels with my brother in Santa Cruz during our college years.

I got into Kayak fishing after spending a year working out of Hawaii as a fishery observer in the long line fishery. I logged a bit of time at sea and am an avid watermen. Like many of you, I take safety seriously and have really valued the safety courses and training I received with NOAA. Always open to refreshers and growing more knowledgeable as a mariner/watermen. I also mention this part because I am interested in getting back into observing, but would like to do it on the west coast. My dream job would be to observe in west coast ground fish (although I know its shut down due to covid-19) so if there are any connections I could make, please let me know. I have a comfortable job and am patient but just wanted to put it out there.

I am an avid surfer and looking forward to learning more about foraging on the Sonoma Coast. Another goal of mine is to learn to dive and spear fish, but that too will have to wait. In the meanwhile I'm pleased to join this community and reserve of knowledge. I'm learning a lot from you all and appreciate what is happening here. Stoked to participate in the NCKA.
